Abstract

PURPOSE: Titled catalyst having high activity and providing a highly stereolegular α-olefin polymer, consisting of a solid catalyst component containing Mg, Ti and a halogen and a specified coordination complex.
CONSTITUTION: A solid catalyst component (A) is obtained by copulverizing a metal halide such as Mg halide or PCl5 with a metal alkoxide compound such as Si(OC2H5)4, heat-treating the couplverized product in an inert organic solvent, and after addition of a Ti compound such as TiCl4, heat-treating the copuverized product in an inert organic solvent, and after addition of a Ti compound such as TiCl4, heat-trating the mixture. On the other hand, a coordination complex (B) having an infrared absorption spectrum with an absorption peak due to carbonyl groups at 1,620W1,690cm-1is prepared by reacting (a) 1mol of an alkyl or hydrogen compound of Al, represented by the formula: AlR3,wherein R is H or a C1W2 alkyl, with (b) a nucleus-substituted aromatic carboxylic acid ester, substitution constant (Hammett's σ value) ≤-0.01, e.g., ethyl toluylate. Next, an olefin polymerization catalyst is prepared by combining component A with component B.
