NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formula I (R1 is H, alkoxy, aralkyloxy, di- substituted-amino, etc.; R2,4 are H, alkyl, aralkyl, trialkysilyl; R3 is alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, heterocyclic group, etc.), and its pharmacologically permissible salt.
EXAMPLE: (4S)-Methyl-α-(4-benzyloxycarbonyl-2-oxoazetidin-1-yl)-α-(phenyl) acetate.
USE: Antibacterial agent having β-lactamase inhibiting activity, and expected to be useful as a remedy of infections diseases together with penicillin, cephalosporin, etc. Also important as an intermediate of bicyclic β-lactam antibiotics.
PROCESS: The compound I wherein R2 and R4 are not H is prepared by reacting a compound II (R2' is R2 except H; R5 is alkyl, etc.) with halogen, and then alcohol, and hydrolyzing the reaction product.
