Abstract
PURPOSE: To convert the nitrogen of triethanolamine into harmless N2 gas with high efficiency by thermally decomposing triethanolamine mixed with a specific proportion of water in the presence of a catalyst selected from among iron, Ni, alloys of these, or oxides of these metals.
CONSTITUTION: The electric furnaces 10 and 12 are heated to 800°C and also the electric furnace 11 is heated to 400°C. On the other hand, water is supplied to the tank 4 and then mixed with the triethanolamine 9 sufficiently with the stirrer 6. In this case, the best amount of water in the mixed solution is 35 to 40 wt %. Then, the mixed solution is introduced into the thermal decomposition region 2 at a definite flow rate and the gasified triethanolamine and water vapor undergo catalytic decomposition reaction over the catalyst 14. Thus, the amount of carbon adhered to the catalyst becomes smaller when the amount of water in triethanolamine exceeds 40 wt %, thus lengthening the catalytic activity of the catalyst.
