Abstract

PURPOSE: To promote the conversion of harmful NOx into harmless N2 and water by reductive reaction even at a lower temperature than room temperature by causing NH3 and O3 to act on NOx containing gas.
CONSTITUTION: In the presence of NH3 in an amount 0.5W5 times (in mole) as much as NOx, O3 is reacted with a gas containing NOx, e.g., N2O, NO, NO2, etc., where O3 serves as a reaction accelerator for NOx and NH3. The preferred amount of O3 to add is 1W50 times as much as NH3. The reaction can also be performed even at temperatures lower than room temperature or higher than 200°C, thus eliminating the needs for heating or cooling in particular. Also, in order to accelerate the reaction and also to eliminate detrimental action caused by the decomposition of excessive O3, activated carbon may be added.
