Abstract
PURPOSE:To enable hydrofluoric and nitric acids to elongate their life in pickling stainless steel by adding a specific amt. of urea to mixed acids based on hydrofluoric and nitric acids and carrying out pickling at a specific temp. to inhibit NH3-forming reaction and utilize the urea efficiently. CONSTITUTION:Urea is added to mixed acids based on hydrofluoric and nitric acids so that the molar ratio of urea to nitrous acid formed from the acids and Fe becomes below 1, and pickling is carried out at 20-50 deg.C. The concn. of urea in the pickling soln. is independent of descaling speed. When the molar ratio is above 1, NH3-forming reaction alone takes place according to the equation, so the acids are remarkably consumed and surface roughening of stainless steel occurs. In case the pickling temp. exceeds 50 deg.C, formation of a passive oxide film is prevented to increase stainless steel dissolving speed, thereby inducing surface roughening and raising urea decomposition rate. A pickling temp. below 20 deg.C requires long descaling time, Under the above conditions urea is utilized efficiently and consumption of hydrofluoric acid is reduced.
