Abstract

PURPOSE: To make it possible to reduce the deterioration of infromation-signal quality with information density for one time slot increased by making the level number of a coded signal at a side, equivalent to higher bits containing much information, smaller than that of lower bits.
CONSTITUTION: To attain the binary multilevel coding of an analog input signal, the higher-bit side is coded at a binary level, for example, and the lower bit side is at a quad level. Coders 1 to 4, which are cascaded, output difference components between analog signal equivalent to coded digital signal and input analog signals to next-stage coders, and signals coded 1 to 4 are supplied to signal composition circuit 5, which arrays outputs of coding processes 1 to 4 according to the connection order of circuits and outputs them as one-word digital coded signals. Consequently, one-bit coders 1 and 2 generate coded outputs (binary) at the higher bit side of the analog input signal, and two-bit coders 3 and 4 generate coded outputs (quad) at the lower bit side.
