Abstract

PURPOSE: To dispatch an alarm from a device for monitoring the fatigue of a rotary shaft by detecting the fatigued crack of the shaft occurred as the sign of the fatigue rupture of the shaft by a detector such as an eddy current flaw detector or the like.
CONSTITUTION: When a crack is not occurred at a rotary shaft 5, the impedance of the coil 8A of a detector 8 such as an eddy current flaw detector or the like is retained constant by means of uniform electromagnetic induction of the shaft material 5 disposed in a high frequency magnetic field. When fatigued crack 11 occurs at the shaft 5, the above induction varies to allow the impedance of the coil of the detector 8 to alter. The relationship between the variations in this impedance and the magnitude of the crack is calibrated in advance. When the impedance variation occurs due to the occurrence of the crack of predetermined magnitude, it is externally notified by an alarm 10. The occurrence of the fatigued crack is detected thus prior to the rupture of the shaft 5 due to the fatigue to thereby prevent serious accident due to the rupture of the shaft 5.
