Abstract

PURPOSE: To recover the deteriorated performance of a cation exchange membrane for electrolysis of an aq. soln. of an alkali metal salt up to above 90% of the performance of a fresh membrane by washing the deteriorated membrane with an acid, followed by swelling in an org. solvent of high polarity and dipping in a caustic alkali of higher concn. than that used in electrolysis.
CONSTITUTION: The above cation exchange membrane the performance of which is deteriorated is dipped in a soln. of an acid, e.g. mineral acid such as hydrochloric acid or org. acid such as acetic acid at about 30W80°C. The dipped membrane is then swollen in a solvent of high polarity, e.g. methanol at room temp. W the b.p. of the solvent. The swollen membrane is further dipped in a soln. of a caustic alkali of higher concn. than that present in a cathode chamber at the time of electrolysis to be regenerated.
