Abstract

PURPOSE: A selected amount of NH3 is introduced into coke furnace exhausted gas, and the mixed gas is contacted with catalyst, thereby to control the production of acidic ammonium sulfate and to effect a low cost, long life, high ratio NO removal.
CONSTITUTION: The temperature of coke furnace exhaust gas varies with time in the range of 150 to 280°C as caused by furnace change. Prior to introducing the exhausted gas into a catalytic layer, the gas NO content is measured by instruments such as a chemical luminescent type meter. Based on the NO content, NH3 is added in an amount such that the molar ratio of NH4/NO be 0.4 or more and less than 1. The mixed gas is, then, contacted with the catalyst at 150 to 280°C. The process produces no observable acid ammonium salts which will deteriorate the catalyst, thereby to prolong the service life of the catalyst, assuring high denitration rate for long period of time.
