Abstract

PURPOSE: To directly plate the surface of Cr or its alloy with a noble metal with good adherence by removing a passivated film on the surface with electrolytic hydrogen and carrying out plating while holding surface potential so that no repassivation is induced.
CONSTITUTION: A product made of Cr or its alloy is activated as a cathode in an activating bath consisting of citric acid, KCN, etc. by electrolytic reduction at a current density f 1 A/dm2. The activated product is taken out from the bath and immediately dipped in a gold flash bath contg. citric acid, KCN, potassium cyanoaurate, etc. and having the same pH value as the activating bath while supplying a current to carry out flash plating. The plated product may further be shifted to a gold plating soln. for thick plating to carry out gold plating. By this method Al and Ti materials can be plated with a noble metal such as gold with good adherence besides Cr material.
