Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce volume phase holograms of high can-stability and particularly high moisture resistance as well as high resolution and diffraction efficiency by applying specific treatment to the hologram recording material which has laser sensitivity in a visible wavelength region and is high in sensitivity.
CONSTITUTION: (Substituted) polyvinyl carbazol (substitutents are alkly, hologen) and 2 to 50wt% thereof of iodine compound such as CI4 are dissolved in a suitable solvent and the solution is coated on a substrate such as glass and is the dried. The sensitive material thus formed is exposed to the interference patterns by coherent lasers of two luminous fluxes of object wave and reference wave, whereby the patterns based on the differences in the degrees of crosslinking are formed between the polymers. Next, the sensitive material is swollen in a first solvent such as xylene so that its volume increase becomes 20% or more and is eluted and removed of the unnecessary iodide. Thereafter, the sensitive material is transferred into a second solvent such as n-hexane, by which it is rapidly shrunk until its volume becomes less than 110% of the initial volume.
