Abstract
PURPOSE:To achieve easier manufacture and less insertion loss, etc. by providing one or more connection points to the optical fiber in the exciter. CONSTITUTION:A steady mode exciter 1 is formed by connecting snort-length optical fibers 4, 6, 8 with connectors 5, 7. Then, the loss of the optical fibers 4, 6, 8 is reduced because of their short-lengths and the manufacture of the steady mode exciter 1 is made easier. Further the leaky mode and clad mode out of the propagation mode, leaky mode and clad mode being transmitted in the optical fibers 4, 6 are reduced by the connectors 5, 7 and mode power exchange occurs between the lower mode power and higher mode power of the propagation mode, thus the mode powers are averaged between the propagation modes themselves and the mode distribution being excited stabilizes. If the fiber to be measured 3 is connected via connector 2 to this steady mode exciter 1, the similar effect occurs even in the connector 2, thus the reproducibility and accuracy of transmission characteristic measurement values are improved.
