Abstract

(57)【要約】 【課題】 パーソナルコンピュータや他の視覚的な表示
装置上のスクリーンセーバーをパーソナライズするため
のシステムと方法を提供する。 【解決手段】 多数の情報源から受信された情報「フィ
ード」は、パーソナライズされたリアルタイム情報表示
システム内で集められ、再フォーマットされ、また蓄積
される。各ユーザは、（ａ）スポーツ情報、気象、投資
助言などのユーザが希望する情報のカテゴリーないしタ
イプ、（ｂ）そのユーザに対して、各カテゴリーにおい
て受信することを希望する正確な情報を特定するパラメ

有している。ユーザのパーソナルコンピュータの表示が

【発明の詳細な説明】
【０００１】
【発明の属する技術分野】本発明は一般的には情報の提
供と表示に関し、特に、ＰＣのユーザが興味のある事項
に関連した現在の最新の情報を含むためにスクリーンセ
ーバー表示が周期的に変化されるように、パーソナルコ
ンピュータ（ＰＣ）または他の視覚的な表示装置上のス
クリーンセーバーをパーソナライズするためのシステム
と方法に関するものである。
【０００２】
【発明が解決しようとする課題】パーソナルコンピュー
タ（ＰＣ）（またはスクリーン電話のような同様な表示
装置）のような表示装置を有するユーザは、装置が予め
決定された時間間隔の間だけ動作しないままのときに
は、装置上に絵情報を表示するためのスクリーンセーバ
ーを採用している。スクリーンセーバーは種々の時間変
化するパターンが表示されるようにパーソナライズする
ことができる一方、これにより表示画面上の焼き付きが
防止されて、表示自体はユーザに有用な情報を伝達しな
いものである。

【課題を解決するための手段】本発明によれば、多数の
情報源から受信された情報「フィード」は、通信ネット
ワーク内部でその一部として構成され、あるいは、ネッ
トワークの外部で電気通信ネットワークを通してアクセ
スされるサービスノード内で集められ、再フォーマット
され、また蓄積される。サービスノードがパーソナルコ
ンピュータまたは他の同様な表示装置を有するユーザか
らの要求を受信したときには、サービスノードはその特
定のユーザが関心のある、交通、気象およびスポーツの
ようなパーソナライズされた、最新の情報を含むスクリ
ーンセーバーに必要とされる情報で応答するために構成
される。
【０００４】ユーザが最初に本発明を使用するために構
成した場合には、（ａ）スポーツ情報、気象、投資助言
などのユーザが希望する情報のカテゴリーあるいはタイ
プ、（ｂ）そのユーザに対して、各カテゴリーにおいて
受信することを希望する正確な情報を特定するパラメー
タを示す、パーソナライズされたユーザプロフィールが
確立される。ユーザのパーソナルコンピュータの表示が
予め決定された時間期間の間だけ動作しないままである
場合には、スクリーンセーバーが動作して、パーソナル
コンピュータがサービスノードにアクセスする。スクリ
ーンセーバーのアプリケーションは、サービスノードに
対して、スクリーンセーバーアプリケーション内に予め
蓄積されたユーザ識別およびパスワードデータを送信す
る。ＰＣはサービスノードからの情報を要求し、この情
報は、ユーザの個々のプロフィールに基づいて、種々の
ソースからのサービスノードにより得られる。サービス
ノードはユーザの装置上に表示するために情報をフォー
マットし、情報はサービスノードからＰＣに送信され、
また検索された情報がスクリーンセーバー機能を中断す
ることなしに装置上に表示される。表示されたパーソナ
ライズされたデータはその後に、情報の周期的な要求を
行うためにパーソナルコンピュータにより構成すること
で、同様な方法で更新される。したがって、スクリーン
セーバーとして表示された情報は、常に「現在のもの」
である。
【０００５】本発明の１つの特徴において、サービスノ
ードは、情報プロバイダをユーザへの直接的な接続から
隔離し、またプロバイダから得られたユーザの情報によ

「発行」変更がサービスノード内の個々のデータベース
内で整理され蓄積／構成されるようにして、情報がユー
ザのアクセスのために効率的に得ることができることを
確保する情報フィードインターフェース内のいくつかの
クライアントを含んでいる。本発明の他の特徴によれ
ば、予め確立されたユーザのプロフィールが、所望の情
報の検索および表示を可能とするためにサービスノード
内に保持される。しかしながら、システムは、要求が開
始されたユーザの位置のような、新規のユーザについて
も確保することができるファクターに基づいて、「デフ
ォルト」プロフィールのインテリジェントな選択をする
ために構成される。これにより、システムにおいてプロ
フィールを予め特定していないユーザが情報をカスタマ
イズすることができるようになる。

【発明の実施の形態】以下に本発明を添付図面に示した
実施の形態に基いてより詳細に説明する。図１を先ず参
照すると、同図には本発明の全体の構成および本発明が
動作する環境を例示したブロックダイヤグラムが示され
ている。全体を１２０で示したサービスノードは、パー
ソナルコンピュータ１０１（あるいは他の視覚的な表示
能力を備えたターミナル）を有する複数のユーザに、そ
れぞれの特定のユーザが関心のあり、パーソナルコンピ
ュータが予め定められた時間期間の間だけアイドル状態
のままであるときにスクリーンセーバーとして表示する
ことができる、交通、気象およびスポーツなどのパーソ
ナライズされた最新の情報を提供するように構成され
る。
【０００７】図１に示されたパーソナルコンピュータ以
外の代表的なマルチメディア端末としては、ＡＴ＆Ｔ
Ｃｏｒｐ．から入手できる、対話機能を提供するトップ
ボックスセット（ＡＴ＆Ｔ Ｃｏｒｐ．から入手できる
ＴＶ Ｉｎｆｏｒｍａｔｉｏｎ Ｃｅｎｔｅｒのよう
な）を備えたテレビであり、Ｐｉｃｔｕｒｅｐｈｏｎｅ
２５００のようなスクリーンホーン、あるいはソニー
（株）から入手されるＭａｇｉｃＬｉｎｋ装置のよう
な、パーソナルデジタル補助器が含まれる。
【０００８】パーソナルコンピュータ１０１は、交換器
間キャリアネットワークと同様にローカル交換キャリア
ネットワーク内のスイッチおよび他の要素を含む電気通
信ネットワーク１１０を通してサービスノード１２０に
接続されている。本発明の実施の形態として、サービス
ノード１２０は電気通信ネットワーク１１０を備えて構
成され、よって、ローカル交換キャリアネットワークあ
るいは交換器間キャリアネットワークのいずれかの一部
として構成される。
【０００９】図１に示したように、サービスノード１２
０はサーバ１３０と情報フィードインターフェース１４
０を含んでいる。サーバ１３０は、電気通信ネットワー
ク１１０を通してパーソナルコンピュータ１０１に接続

したタイプのＰＣのディスプレイ上に情報を提供する。
情報フィードインターフェース１４０は、サーバ１３０
に接続されるともに、異なる遠隔の位置にある複数の情
報プロバイダに接続されている。以下に説明するよう
に、これらの情報プロバイダは、例えば、気象プロバイ
ダ１５０、交通プロバイダ１５２、および金融情報プロ

を解析し、またファイルシステム１３７内に蓄積された
プログラムの制御下で動作するマイクロプロセッサ１３
９を使用して、解析したデータをデータベース内に蓄積
し、および後述する機能を含む種々の処理を実行するよ
うに構成される。マイクロプロセッサ１３９は、図２に
例示したタイプの情報を蓄積するデータベース１３５内
に蓄積された情報にアクセスする。
【００１１】情報と指示は、通信インターフェースおよ
びプロトコル変換器として機能する第１の通信マネージ
ャー１３１を使用して、マイクロプロセッサ１３９とパ
ーソナルコンピュータ１０１との間で通信される。通信
マネージャー１３１は、各ユーザに対する管理と課金の
目的のために必要なシステム使用状況情報を提供する使
用状況プロフィール管理モジュール１３６を含んでい
る。通信マネージャー１３１はまた、ユーザデータおよ

方、アプリケーションプロトコルはどのようにビットを

のエンドユーザ装置により理解され表示されるように、
ユーザアプリケーションが発生したデータをフォーマッ
トするユーザアプリケーションの提供を含んでいること
を意味する。フォーマット処理は、Ｗｏｒｌｄ Ｗｉｄ
ｅ Ｗｅｂにおいて通常使用されるＨｙｐｅｒＴｅｘｔ
Ｍａｒｋｕｐ Ｌａｎｇｕａｇｅ（ＨＴＭＬ）のよう
な言語を使用して行われる。
【００１４】サーバ１３０はまた、サービスノード１２
０を制御し動作するために必要な情報とプログラムを含
むファイルシステム１３７を含んでいる。
【００１５】情報フィードインターフェース１４０は、
情報プロバイダ１５０、１５２および１５４の対応する
１つにそれぞれインターフェースを提供する複数のクラ
イアント１４２〜１４４を含んでいる。よって、気象ク
ライアント１４３は気象プロバイダ１５０に接続されて
インターフェースし、交通クライアント１４２は交通プ
ロバイダ１５２に接続されてインターフェースし、また
金融クライアント１４４は金融情報プロバイダ１５４に
接続されてインターフェースしている。クライアント１
４２〜１４４のそれぞれは、いくつかの方法の１つで形
成される、ローカルプロセッサを含んでいる。
【００１６】第１に、クライアントは関連する情報プロ
バイダに周期的に接続され、またプロバイダから入手で
きる情報をダウンロードする。この構成において、クラ
イアントは情報プロバイダからの呼びに応答できまたプ
ロバイダにより送信された情報を受信する。他の構成と
しては、クライアントは情報プロバイダと連続して通信
リンクを維持し、また情報（サービスノードが開始し
た）をダウンロードするか、あるいは情報（プロバイダ
が開始した）を受信する。クライアント１４２〜１４４
はまた、Ｐｒｏｃｏｍｍ−Ｐｌｕｓのような市販で入手
可能な通信ソフトウェアを使用した市販で入手可能なパ
ーソナルコンピュータで構成される。他の場合におい
て、クライアントは情報プロバイダがユーザへの直接的
な接続から隔離されるように構成されて、表示のために
必要とされる必要なフォーマット処理および「発行」変
更はユーザの表示システムにより行われる構成とされ
る。

のであり、いずれかのユーザにより使用されるパーソナ
ルコンピュータ１０１あるいは他のマルチメディア端末
装置とサービスノード１２０との間の正確な接続は、そ
のユーザがサービスノード１２０と相互接続するために
利用可能な通信機能に依存するものである。本発明にお
いて必須であることは、多数の情報ソースから受信され
た情報「フィード」は、後のユーザによるアクセスのた
めに、集まられ、再フォーマットされ、またサービスノ
ード内に蓄積されることである。例えば、特定のユーザ
がＩＳＤＮ端末を有する場合、そのユーザはＩＳＤＮラ
インを経て直接的にサーバ１３０に接続される。

データベース１３５の構成を例示したブロックダイヤグ
ラムが示されている。一般的に、サーバ１３０は、種々

ベース１７１、気象データベース、並びに金融データベ

は、（ａ）そのユーザに提供される情報サービスのカテ
ゴリーまたはタイプ、並びに（ｂ）これらの情報サービ
スに対して、所望の情報に関連したパラメータを特定す
るシステムの各ユーザに対する情報を含んでいる。例え
ば、第１の座は交通、金融およびスポーツ情報を希望
し、第２のユーザが気象およびニュース情報を希望し、

望したとする。この場合には、第１のユーザはある道路

びに特定のチームに対するスポーツ情報を希望してい
る。第２のユーザは情報の同じタイプのいくつかを得る
ことを希望するが、詳細は異なる。この例では、第２の
ユーザはＡ市に対するローカルニュースおよび気象を希
望する一方、第３のユーザは異なる位置の、Ｂ市に対す
るニュースと気象を希望している。サーバ１３０内のデ
ータベース管理システムは、Ｉｎｆｏｍｉｘ（登録商
標）のような市販で入手できるリレーショナルデータベ
ースを使用して構成される。

された最新の情報をサービスノード１２０にアクセスす
るパーソナルコンピュータのエンドユーザ装置１０１に
提供するために使用されるプロセスの１つの実施の形態
を示したフローダイヤグラムが示されている。図３内の
各ブロックは、本発明により機能的に期待されるパーソ
ナルコンピュータ１０１およびサービスノード１２０に
より行われる動作を規定している。このプロセス内のス
テップは、パーソナルコンピュータまたは他の同様な表
示装置上で動作しているスクリーンセーバーからの要求
を受信したときには、システムは、その特定のユーザが

一度確立された場合には、ステップ３０３においてパー
ソナルコンピュータ１０１とサービスノード１２０との
間で２方向の通信が可能であるかどうかの決定が行われ
る。可能でない場合には、エラー状態が存在しており、
プロセスはステップ３０５に進み、ここでパーソナルコ
ンピュータ１０１はサービスノード１２０との接続を終

を使用したときには、情報はデータベース１３５内に蓄

テゴリーにおいて受信されることを機能した正確な情報
を特定するパラメータを示す、パーソナライズされたユ
ーザのプロフィールが確立される。このプロフィール
は、ＡＴ＆Ｔ Ｃｏｒｐ．から入手可能なＣｏｎｖｅｒ
ｓａｎｔ（登録商標）音声応答システムのような対話型
の音声プラットフォームと通信すること、あるいは所望
のサービスオプションを選択するためにＰＣアプリケー
ションを使用するなどによる、多くの方法で作られる。
【００２６】ＰＣのスクリーンセーバにより送信された
ＩＤが有効でない場合、プロセスはステップ３０９でＮ
Ｏの結果として続けられ、またステップ３１１に進み、
ここでエラー状態として処理される。このステップにお
いて、パーソナルコンピュータ１０１およびサービスノ
ード１２０の双方が現存の通信セッションを終了し、ま
たパーソナルコンピュータ１０１は適当なメッセージを
ユーザに表示する。
【００２７】ＰＣのスクリーンにより送信されたＩＤが
有効である場合には、プロセスはステップ３０９におい
てＹＥＳの結果で続けられてステップ３１３に進み、こ
こで、ユーザのパーソナライズされた情報がデータベー
ス１３５から検索される。このステップにおいて、パー
ソナルコンピュータはサービスノード１２０からパーソ
ナライズされた情報を要求し、サービスノード１２０は
ユーザのプロフィールにアクセスし、また、プロフィー
ル情報に基いて、このユーザにより希望された特定の情
報に対してデータベース１３５に照会する。
【００２８】次に、ステップ３１５において、ユーザの
パーソナライズされた情報が適切にフォーマットされ
る。このステップにおいて、ステップ３１３において検
索された情報は実際にサービスノード１２０からパーソ
ナルコンピュータ１０１に送信される。
【００２９】ステップ３１７において、検索、フォーマ
ット処理、あるいはユーザへの情報の送信に関してエラ
ー状態が発生したかどうかの決定が行われる。ＹＥＳの
結果が得られた場合には、エラーであることを意味し、
プロセスはステップ３１９い進み、ここでは、ステップ
３１１と同様に、パーソナルコンピュータ１０１とサー
ビスノード１２０の双方で現存の通信セッションが終了
し、またパーソナルコンピュータ１０１がユーザに適当
なメッセージを表示する。

れによりサービスノード１２０とパーソナルコンピュー
タ１０１の両方は通信セッションを終了する。ステップ
３２３において、ステップ３１３において検索されステ
ップ３１５においてフォーマットされた情報がユーザの
パーソナルコンピュータ１０１上に、スクリーンセーバ
機能を中断することなしに、ＰＣのスクリンセーバのコ
ンテキスト内に表示される。
【００３１】ここで、図３に示した全てのステップを通
してスクリーンセーバ機能が動作したままであること、
およびこれらのステップが自動的に、つまりユーザによ
る中断なしに行われることが重要である。
【００３２】図４を参照して、同図には、本発明を使用
して種々のユーザ特定のサービスから得られたパーソナ
ライズされた情報を組み合わせた、「Ａｔ−Ａ−Ｇｌａ
ｎｃｅ」スクリーンセーバ表示の例が示されている。こ
の表示は、ユーザ特定の種々のサービスからの情報を組
み合わせたものであり、またユーザに一連のメニューの
ナビゲーションの必要なしに価値のある情報を示すもの
である。図示したように、一連のスクリーン領域４０１
〜４０６は表示領域４００を「フロート」つまりランダ
ムに、好ましくは互いに重なることなしに移動してい
る。表示領域のそれぞれは、この例では、気象（領域４
０２と４０３）、交通（領域４０１）、ニュース（領域
４０５）、金融（領域４０４）および他の情報（領域４
０６）を含むユーザが選択したトピックに関連した異な
る情報を含んでいる。領域４０１〜４０６に表示された
情報は、サービスノード１２０から最新に得られたもの
であるので、最新のものであり、またこれは、各領域４
０１〜４０６のそれぞれの内側の情報がユーザにより選
択され、またユーザのプロフィール内で述べられたよう
にカスタマイズされる。データが更新されるので、スク
リーンセーバは動作したままであり、またスクリーンセ
ーバ動作が中断されることはない。スクリーンセーバの
ユーザ表示としては種々のものが可能である。
【００３３】以上、本発明の好ましい実施の形態を説明
したが、本発明の種々の変形あるいは用途は当業者には
自明である。例えば、個々のユーザに対する予め蓄積さ
れたプロフィールの代わりに、新規なユーザに対しても
確認できる要求が開始されたユーザの位置のようなファ
クターに基いて、システムが「デフォルト」プロフィー
ルのインテリジェントな選択を行う構成とすることもで
きる。よって、ＮｅｗＪｅｒｓｅｙ内に位置する電話か
らのサービスノード１２０を呼んでいるユーザは、異な
る情報が要求されたかに拘らず、Ｎｅｗ Ｊｅｒｓｅｙ
内部の交通および気象状態に関する情報を自動的に受信
する。これにより、蓄積されあるいは予め特定されたプ
ロフィールを持たないユーザに対してもシステムが情報
をカスタマイズすることができる。したがって、本発明
は添付した請求の範囲によりのみ限定されるものであ
る。

Claims (6)

    【特許請求の範囲】
  1. 【請求項１】 視覚的な表示装置上にパーソナライズさ
    れた時間変化する情報を表示するためのシステムにおい
    て、 データベースを含むサービスノード、 １つまたはそれより多くの情報プロバイダから情報を得
    るように構成されるとともに前記データベース内に前記
    情報を蓄積する前記サービスノード内の情報フィードイ
    ンターフェース、 前記システムの各ユーザに対してプロフィールを維持す
    るために構成された前記サービスノード内のサーバ、前
    記プロフィールは前記各ユーザに提供される前記データ
    ベース内の特定の蓄積された情報を示し、並びに前記特
    定の蓄積された情報を前記視覚的な表示装置にダウンロ
    ードするための通信マネージャーからなる装置。
  2. 【請求項２】 前記視覚的な表示装置が、スクリーンセ
    ーバーが動作しているときはいつでも、前記特定の蓄積
    された情報をスクリーンセーバーとして表示するために
    構成されている、請求項１記載の装置。
  3. 【請求項３】 前記サービスノードが電気通信ネットワ
    ーク内に配置されている、請求項１記載の装置。
  4. 【請求項４】 前記通信マネージャーが、前記視覚的な
    表示装置からのコマンドに応答して前記ダウンロードを
    行うために構成されている、請求項１記載の装置。
  5. 【請求項５】 前記視覚的な表示装置がパーソナルコン
    ピュータである、請求項１記載の装置。
  6. 【請求項６】 視覚的な表示装置上にスクリーンセーバ
    ーとしてパーソナライズされた時間変化する情報を表示
    するための方法において、 １つまたはそれより多くの情報プロバイダから情報を得
    るとともに前記情報を前記データベース内に蓄積し、 前記システムの各ユーザに対するプロフィールを維持
    し、前記プロフィールは前記各ユーザに供給された前記
    データベース内の特定の蓄積された情報を示し、 前記特定の蓄積された情報を前記視覚的な表示装置にダ
    ウンロードし、並びにスクリーンセーバーが動作してい
    るときはいつでも、前記視覚的な表示装置上に前記特定
    の蓄積された情報を表示する、方法。
