【従来の技術及び発明が解決しようとする課題】光ファ
イバは、通信信号用伝送媒体として広範囲に用いられる
ようになった。その用途は、ビデオ分配システム、デー
タ及び音声通信施設、センサ信号回路網を含む。マルチ
モード及びシングルモード光ファイバシステムは共にこ
のような用途に用いられている。

【0003】光ファイバシステムが行き当たる制約条件
の1つは、光ノイズに関する。一般的な光ノイズ源は光
パワー反射である。光パワー反射は、一般的に、光ファ
イバの端部を含むファイバ光通信路におけるどんな不連
続部でも生じ、入射光の一部を光源の方へ逆行させる。
このように反射される光パワーは、システム中の光源地
点または他の不連続部地点に到達した時再び反射し、信
号に不要ノイズ成分を加え得る。また、光源に逆反射さ
れる光パワーは、光源、典型的にはレーザ、の基本動作
を悪化させ得る。例として、ここに参照により含まれ
る、R.Rao et al., Electronics Letters, Vol.22(14)
pages 731-732(1986) を参照されたい。したがって、反
射の制御は、光ファイバシステムの設計における重要な
事柄である。

折率が整合された液体を用いるコネクタを含み、色々な
型式の光ファイバコネクタが知られている。このような
コネクタの一例は、ルンジ(Runge) による「光ファイバ
コネクタ」と題する米国特許第4,512,630 号に開示され
ている。

【実施例】好適な実施例において、本発明は図2に概略
的に示される低反射光ファイバ末端部を含む装置(すな
わち光通信システム、光カップラ等)である。数字3は
1本の光ファイバを指し、10は光ファイバ3の末端化
されるファイバ端部を指し、18及び20はそれぞれフ
ァイバクラッド及びコアを指し、22は光ファイバ3の
端部10に取り付けられた末端装置を指し、24はファ
イバ/末端装置界面を指し、26は、典型的に末端装置
と光ファイバの一部を覆う適当な被覆物を指す。コアは
有効屈折率N(模範的には0.589μmにおけるN=
1.484±0.026)を有し、クラッドはNより小
さい有効屈折率nを有する。“有効”屈折率の意味は光
ファイバ技術における当業者に周知である。末端装置
は、ファイバコアの有効屈折率Nに近い(典型的には±
3.5%以内、好適には±2%以内の)屈折率を有す
る。この屈折率は典型的に末端装置のいたるところで同
じになっている。被覆物は、典型的に、末端装置より高
い有効屈折率を有するUV硬化性ポリマーである。

4ポート方向光カップラに関して説明される。このよう
なカップラは周知であり、詳細な説明を要しない。方向
カップラ2は、それぞれ2つの端部、4及び8、6及び
10を有する2本の光ファイバ1及び3からなると言え
ば十分である。模範的には、ファイバ1の端部4はレー
ザのような送光装置12に接続され、端部8は光ファイ
バ伝送リンク14に接続され、光ファイバ3の端部6は
受光装置16に接続され、端部10は末端化されるべき
指定端部である。送光装置12からの光の進路は実線の
矢印で示され、光導波路14から来る光の進路は点線の
矢印で示される。端部10に反射抑圧装置が作られてい
ない場合には、送光装置からの光の一部は、点線の矢印
で示されるようにこの端部10で反射されるだろう。受
光装置に到達するこの反射光の一部はノイズとなり、シ
ステムの性能を劣化させるだろう。
4ポート方向光カップラに関して説明される。このよう
なカップラは周知であり、詳細な説明を要しない。方向
カップラ2は、それぞれ2つの端部、4及び8、6及び

で示されるようにこの端部10で反射されるだろう。受
光装置に到達するこの反射光の一部はノイズとなり、シ
ステムの性能を劣化させるだろう。
【0009】好適な実施例において、端部10に取り付
けられるのは図2に示されるような末端装置である。こ
の末端装置は、模範的に、末端化されるべきファイバと
実質的に同じ直径(例えば125μm)を有する1本の
コアレス非ガイド(ドープされていないまたはドープさ
れた)シリカファイバである。前記ファイバは、例えば
普通のシリカ管をつぶして作られたシリカ棒から引き伸
ばすことによって容易に作ることができる。光ファイバ
を下って送られる光がファイバ/末端装置結合部に達し
た時、反射はほとんど生ぜず、本質的に全部の光が末端
装置に結合される。望ましくは、末端装置は、内部に結
合された光が散乱及び/または吸収されるように、また
好ましくは下流の末端または空気界面でほとんど逆反射
が生じないように選択される。末端装置の屈折率がNに
近ければ近いほど、ファイバ/末端装置界面における反
射は少なくなる。比較的不純な材料からなる末端装置を
使用すると、しばしば光の散乱及び/または吸収を増加
させる効果を生じることがある。末端装置は、融接や屈
折率が整合されたエポキシ樹脂の使用を含む適切な技術
のどれによってもファイバに取り付けることができる。
末端化されるべきファイバの指定端部は、典型的に、末
端装置を取り付ける前に、研磨、曲げ、ねじり、裂開、
またはテーパー付けのようなどんな特別な処置も要しな
い。しかしながら従来の融接装置は、典型的に、ファイ
バ端部が比較的平らになっていることを要する。

折率1.458)に融接すると、末端装置の長さが約4
cm以上の場合に本質的に無反射末端になった。末端装
置が3cmの長さの場合には、約−70dBの逆反射が
測定された。当業者は、最小の末端装置の長さはしばし
ば末端装置の構成に依存し、典型的に末端装置材料が純
粋でなくなればなるほどより短い末端装置を使用できる
ようになることにきづくであろう。適当なポリマー被覆
物の存在は反射をさらに減らすことになり得る。例え

Claims (8)
- 【請求項1】 コアとクラッドと指定端部とを備え、前
記コアは有効屈折率Nを有する光ファイバと、前記光フ
ァイバの指定端部に取り付けられた延長物体(”末端装
置”と呼ばれる)とからなる物品において、前記末端装
置は、そのいたるところ0.965N〜1.035Nの
範囲の実質的に一定な屈折率を有することを特徴とする
物品。 - 【請求項2】 請求項1記載の物品において、少なくと
も末端装置は、該末端装置の屈折率より大きな屈折率を
有するポリマー被覆物で被覆される物品。 - 【請求項3】 請求項1記載の物品において、末端装置
は、前記光ファイバと実質的に同じ直径になっており、
融接により光ファイバの前記指定端部に取り付けられる
物品。 - 【請求項4】 請求項1記載の物品において、末端装置
は、屈折率が整合されたエポキシ樹脂により光ファイバ
の前記指定端部に取り付けられる物品。 - 【請求項5】 請求項4記載の物品において、前記屈折
率が整合されたエポキシ樹脂は0.965N〜1.03
5Nの範囲の屈折率を有する物品。 - 【請求項6】 請求項1記載の物品において、末端装置
は3cm以上の長さを有する物品。 - 【請求項7】 請求項1記載の物品において、末端装置
