Description
〔産業上の利用分野〕
本発明は、インクジエツトプリンタに適する相
変化インクの媒体の成分及びこの媒体を用いた相
変化インクに関する。 〔従来の技術及び発明が解決しようとする課題〕 一般的に言つて、相変化インクは、外気の温度
のときは、固体であるが、インクジエツトプリン
タの駆動温度まで上昇させると液体となる。駆動
温度において液体となつたインク滴は、プリンタ
から噴出し、様々な印刷媒体の表面にインク滴が
接すると、直ちに固体と化したインク滴となつ
て、所定のパターンを形成する。 相変化インクは、輸送するときとか、長期間保
管しておくときなど、室温では固体のままである
点が好ましい。また、インクの蒸発に起因するノ
ズルのつまりに関した問題は、大幅に改善され、
これによりインクジエツトによる印刷の信頼性が
向上する。さらに、インク滴は基層と接触すると
ただちに固体化するので印刷媒体上でのインクの
にじみは防止されドツトの質も向上する。 インクジエツト印刷のための相変化インクにお
ける当初の従来例は、静電偏向型の印刷装置によ
る単色インクジエツトであつた。このように、例
えば、米国特許第3653932号に、セバシン酸のジ
エステルによるインク基材(インクの着色剤を溶
かす媒体となる材料を基材と呼ぶことにする。)
を採用した低温度溶融インク(30℃から50℃)が
ある。同様なプロセスとしては、米国特許第
3715219号に、パラフインアルコールを基材とし
た低温度溶融インク(30℃から60℃)がある。し
かしながら、低温度溶融相変化インクが基層上の
印刷に用いられると、オフセツト問題が生じる。
すなわち、これらのインクによつてできた印刷基
層は、印刷したあと積み上げたりして保存してい
る間に、たがいに被着してしまう。特に気温が高
いときなどそうである。 米国特許第4390369号及び米国特許第4484948号
は、木蝋、カンデリラ蝋、カルナウバ蝋などの天
然蝋をインク基材として採用した単色相変化イン
クに関する方法を記述している。このインクは、
ドロツプ・オン・デマンド・インクジエツトプリ
ンタによつて、65℃から75℃の温度で印刷に供さ
れる。米国特許第4659383号では、C20−24アシ
ドまたはアルコール、ケトン、及びアクリル酸可
塑剤樹脂をインク基材とした単色インク成分を開
示している。これらの単色インク成分は、その印
刷物が人手をへたり折り曲げられたりして汚れた
場合、これに対して耐性を持つていない。 日本の特願昭53−128053号では、アセトアミド
のような室温では固体であるアミドが印刷インク
として用いられている。米国特許第4684956号は、
合成の微晶蝋(ハイドロカーボン蝋)及び微晶ポ
リエチレン蝋を用いた単色相変化インクを開示し
ている。これの溶融状態の成分は、ドロツプオン
デマンドのインクジエツト応用技術を用いた様々
な多孔性又は非多孔性基層に対して適用可能であ
る。 最後に、ヨーロツパ特許第0187352号及びヨー
ロツパ特許第0206286号では、カラーの相変化イ
ンクを扱つている。これらの第1の応用例では、
インク基材は、脂肪酸、熱可塑性ポリエチレン、
及び相変化材料から成つている。また第2の応用
例では、熱硬化性樹脂のペアのアルコール部分、
有機溶媒の混合物(O型とP型のトルエンスルホ
ンアミド)及び染料から成つている。 オーバーヘツドプロジエクシヨンによりカラー
画像を表示するための光を透過する媒体上に、カ
ラーのインクジエツトプリントを行う場合は、以
前から問題があつた。たとえば、水性インクの場
合、高品質の画像を形成するためには、液状のイ
ンクを吸収させるために光透過性媒体上に特別の
コーテイングを施さねばならない。例えば、米国
特許第4503111号、4547405号、4555437号を参照
されたい。相変化インクによるジエツト印刷に用
いられる印刷フイルム上に特別なコーテイングが
必要でないとしても、これまでのカラーの相変化
インクは、実質的に均一の厚さの光透過性印刷媒
体上に印刷するときは、その光透過性に線形性が
なかつた。従つて、オーバーヘツドプロジエクシ
ヨン技術では、カラー画像の表示のためにあまり
効果的に利用できなかつた。 そこで、本発明の目的は、相変化インクを用い
て所定のパターンに、実質的に均一な厚さの薄い
フイルム上に鮮明にカラー印刷することができ、
例えば3M社の413オーバーヘツドプロジエクタの
ようなオーバーヘツドプロジエクタによつて、可
視像を投射することができ、そのときの光透過性
に線形性があるような相変化インクを提供するこ
とである。 本発明の他の目的は、比較的高い温度におい
て、単一の溶融点を有し、耐久性のある相変化イ
ンクを提供することにある。 〔課題を解決するための手段及び作用〕 本発明の相変化インク基材成分及びこれによる
相変化インクは、上述の従来の相変化インクの問
題を解決する。 本発明の基材成分は、交換のきく着色材と組合
わされ、本発明の相変化インクとなる。この相変
化インク基材成分の、実質的に均一な厚さの薄い
フイルム、及びこれからできるインクは、高い段
階の明度及び彩度を有している。インク基材の実
質的に均一な厚みの薄い層は、やはり直線的な光
透過性を有する。 好適には、相変化インク基材成分は、脂肪性ア
ミドを含む材料から成つている。本発明の相変化
インク基材成分を作る工程は、脂肪性アミドを含
む材料を用いる工程を含み、この脂肪性アミドを
含む材料を、交換のきく着色剤と組み合わせる新
規な工程も含んでいる。脂肪性アミドを含む材料
とは、典型的には、テトラアミド材料及びモノア
ミド材料である。 本発明のその他の目的、特徴、及び利点は、以
下の好適な実施例による詳細な説明により明らか
になる。 〔実施例〕 本発明は、相変化インクを製造するのに有用な
相変化インク基材成分に関する。本発明の相変化
インク基材成分は、典型的には、脂肪性アミドを
含む材料から成る。本発明の相変化インクの脂肪
性アミドを含む材料は、好適にはテトラアミド材
料である。相変化インクの基材をつくるのに好適
なテトラアミド材料は、好適には脂肪酸、ジアミ
ン(エチレンジアミド)及び二量体酸の反応生成
物を含む二量体酸ベースのテトラアミドである。
炭素原子を10から20含む脂肪酸は、二量体酸ベー
スのテトラアミドの生成に用いるのが好ましい。
二量体酸ベースのテトラアミドは、ユニオンキヤ
ンプ社にて製造されており、エチレンジアミン、
二量体酸、及び以下の脂肪酸から成つている。即
ちデカン酸(ユニオンキヤンプ X3202−23)、
ミリスチン酸(ユニオンキヤンプX3202−56)、
ステアリン酸(ユニオンキヤンプ X3138−43、
X3164−23、X3202−44、X3202−46、X3222−
65、X3261−37、X3261−53、X3290−72)、ドコ
サン酸(ユニオンキヤンプ X3202−36)であ
る。本発明の目的のために、もつとも好適な二量
体酸ベースのテトラアミドは、二量体酸、エチレ
ンジアミン及びステアリン酸が化学量論的に1:
2:2の比のときの反応生成物である。ステアリ
ン酸は、好適な脂肪酸の生成物である。これは、
二量体酸及びエチレンジアミンとともにあるこれ
の付加物は、最も粘性の少ない二量体酸ベースの
テトラアミドを有するからである。その成分は、
もつとも入手しやすく、従つてコストが低い。 この脂肪性アミドを含む材料は、モノアミドを
含んでもよい。実際、この好適な例では、相変化
インクの基体成分は、テトラアミド成分とモノア
ミド成分の両方を含んでいる。このモノアミド成
分は、典型的には1次または2次モノアミドを含
んでよい。しかし、2次モノアミドのほうが好ま
しい。ウイコ・ケミカル・カンパニによつて製造
されているケマミド・S(Kemamido S)よう
な、1次モノアミドであるステアラミドは、採用
可能である。2次モノアミドであるベヘニールベ
ヘナミド(ケマミドEX−666)、ステアリルステ
アラミド(ケマミドS−180及びケマミドEX−
672)は、みなウイコ・ケミカル・カンパニによ
つて製造されているが、大変有用なモノアミドで
ある。しかしながら、ステアリルステアラミド
は、本発明の相変化インク基体成分をつくるうえ
で選り抜きのモノアミドである。 本発明の好適な2次モノアミド成分を記述する
もうひとつの方法は、構造式によるものである。
いつそう詳しくいうと、2次モノアミド成分は、
以下の構造式によつて表される成分を含んでい
る。 ここでxは5から21までの整数、 yは11から43までの整数、 aは6から22までの整数、 bは13から45までの整数である。 本発明の脂肪性アミドを含む材料の好適例は、
互いに物理的互換性のある複数の脂肪酸材料から
成つている。典型的には、複数の脂肪性アミド成
分が、相変化インクの基材成分として採用されて
も、この基材成分は、実質的に融点が一つしかな
い。この相変化インクの基材成分の融点は、好適
には、少なくとも約70℃、より好適には、少なく
とも約80℃、もつとも好適には少なくとも約85℃
である。 好適な相変化インク基材成分は、テトラアミド
及びモノアミドからなる。好適な実施例における
モノアミドに対するテトラアミドの重量比は、
2:1から1:10であり、より好適には、約1:
1から1:3である。 相変化インクの基材成分に一層の柔軟性と接着
性とを付加するために、接着性付与剤を採用して
もよい。好適な接着性付与剤は、脂肪性アミド成
分材料と交換可能なものである。これらの中に
は、例えば、水素と化合したアビエチン(樹脂)
酸のグリセリン・エステルであるフオーラル85
(Foral 85)、水素と化合したアビエチン(樹脂)
酸のペンタエリトリトール・エステルであるフオ
ーラル105(Foral 105)があつて、いずれもハー
クルス・ケミカル・カンパニによつて製造されて
いる。更にネビル・ケミカル・カンパニによつて
製造されている合成ポリテルペン樹脂であるネブ
タツク100(Nevtac 100)及びネブタツク80
(Nevtac 80)、更にグツドイヤー・ケミカル・カ
ンパニによつて製造されている調整された合成ポ
リテルペン樹脂であるウイングタツク86
(Wingtack 86)がある。しかしながら、フオー
ラル105は、本発明の相変化インク基材成分を作
るうえで、えりぬきの粘着性付与剤である。 本発明の相変化インクの基材成分を形成するた
めに加えることの可能な成分は、可塑剤であつ
て、これは、基材成分と協同して柔軟性を増すと
ともに溶融状態における粘性を低下させる。可塑
剤は、本発明の成分中とくに好ましいものである
ことがわかつており、フタル酸ジオクチル、フタ
ル酸ジウンデシル、フタル酸アルキルベンゼン
(サンテイサイザ278)、リン酸トリフエニルがあ
り、みなモンサント・ケミカル・カンパニーによ
つて製造されている。更に、FMCコーポレーシ
ヨンによつて製造されているリン酸トリブトキシ
ルエチル(KP−140)、モフレツクス・ケミカ
ル・カンパニによつて製造されているフタル酸ジ
シクロヘキシル(モフレツクス150)及びコダツ
クによつて製造されているトリオクチル・トリメ
リテートなどもある。しかしながら、本発明の相
変化インクの基材成分を製造するには、サンテイ
サイザ278が可塑剤としては最良である。 この相変化インクの基材成分には、その他の成
分を付加してもよい。典型的な相変化インクの化
学成分では、酸化防止剤が基材成分の退色を防止
するために用いられる。好適な酸化防止剤として
は、チバガイギー社製造のイアガノツクス1010、
ユニローヤルカンパニ製造のノーガード76、ノー
ガード512、ノーガード524を含むことができる
が、最も好適な酸化防止剤は、ノーガード524で
ある。 一つの好適な例としては、相変化インク基材成
分は、テトラアミドとモノアミド成分、粘着性付
与剤、可塑剤、及び粘性調整剤を含んでいる。相
変化インクの基材成分における成分構成比の好適
な範囲は、以下のようになる。テトラアミドの構
成比が、約10から50重量%、モノアミドの構成比
が、約30から80重量%、粘着付与剤の構成比が、
約0から25重量%、可塑剤の構成比が、約0から
25重量%、粘着調整剤の構成比が0から10重量%
である。 すでに指摘したように、相変化インク基材成分
から作られた本発明の相変化インクは、優れた物
理的性質を呈する。例えば、本発明の相変化イン
クは、従来の相変化インクとは異なり、実質的に
均一な厚みの薄いフイルム上に用いられるとき、
高い水準の明度と、色相と、直線的な光透過性を
発揮するので、オーバーヘツドプロジエクシヨン
技術を用いてカラー画像を構成できる。 本発明に用いられた相変化インクの各伝達スペ
クトラムは、市販の分光光度計を用いて測定され
た。この分光光度計による測定は、この装置の製
造者が提供している適切な校正方法を用い、
ASTM E805(アメリカ材料試験協会 E805の
「材料の色及び色の違いを測定するときの装置を
用いた標準的な方法」に従い行つた。本発明の測
色上の全般的な性質を検証し、定量化するため
に、測定によつて得られたデータは、ASTM
E308((CIEシステムを用いた対象物の色を特定す
るための標準的な方法)にしたがつて、三刺激の
統合の手法を用いて整頓し、各相変化インクサン
プルの1976CIE L*(明度)、a*(赤色度−緑
色度)、b*(黄色度−青色度)、及び
(CIELAB)値を測定した。さらに、CIELABの
精神測定学(Psychometric Chroma)上の値、
すなわちC*ab、更にCIELABの精神測定上の
色相角(Hue Angle)であるhを、出版物
CIE15.2測色学(1986年ウイーン、CIEセントラ
ルビユーロー刊、第2版)の内容に従つて計算し
た。 従来の相変化インクとは異なり、本発明の相変
化インク基材成分の性質は、実質的に均一な厚さ
の薄いフイルム上で、比較的高いL*の値を呈す
ることである。本発明の相変化インクの基材成分
は、約20ミクロンの厚み、好適には少なくとも約
65ミクロン、さらに好適には少なくとも約75ミク
ロン、もつとも好適には少なくとも約85ミクロン
の厚みをもつ実質的に均一な厚さの薄いフイルム
上で、ある明度を呈する。 この方法で作られた相変化インクは、実質的に
均一な厚さの薄いフイルム上で、比較的高いL*
の値に加えて、比較的高いC*ab値を有する。
従来の相変化インクは、実質的に均一な厚さの薄
いフイルム上でさえ、光透過性が極めて僅かしか
線形性を示さない。この相変化インク成分は、一
つのC*ab値を示し、これは、厚みが約20ミク
ロンの実質的に均一な薄いフイルム上で、減法混
色の原色の黄色、マゼンタ、シアンの相変化イン
ク成分が示すものである。これらの値は、好適に
は、黄色のインク成分については、少なくとも50
であり、マゼンタインク成分については少なくと
も50であり、シアンインク成分については、少な
くとも30である。一層好適には、C*ab値の減
法混色における値は、黄色、マゼンタ、シアンの
各いろについてそれぞれ少なくとも60、60、35で
ある。さらにもつとも好適には、これらのC*
ab値は、夫々67、69、40である。 黒の相変化インク成分の光透過性のレベルは、
このときの色の強度を最大化させるために最低と
なることが重要である。従つて、黒色相変化イン
クにおける約20ミクロンの厚みの実質的に均一な
薄いフイルム上でのL*値は、約35を超えないこ
とが好ましく、より好適には約30を、さらに最も
好適には約25を超えないことが望ましい。 各相変化インク及びインクの基材成分は、きわ
めて耐久性がある。耐久性の一つの目安は、対摩
耗性である。本発明の目的のためには、CS−10
の型式の研磨用ホイールに500グラムの荷重をか
けたテレダイン・テイバー・アブレイダ
(Teledyne Taber Abrader)モデル5130を用い
て、本発明の相変化インク基材成分からつくられ
たインクの印刷サンプルを試験することによつて
測定する。この研磨用ホイールは、各サンプルの
研磨を行つたあとS−11の再研磨デイスクを用い
て再研磨される。紙に印刷されたサンプルは、
ASTM D4060−84(テイバー・アブレイダによ
る有機コーテイングの耐摩耗性の標準的な試験方
法)に従つて試験する。光透過性の薄いフイルム
に印刷されたサンプルは、ASTM D1044−85
(透明プラスチツク表面の耐摩耗性の標準的な試
験方法)に従つて試験する。印刷サンプルは上述
のように試験され、優れた耐摩耗性を呈すること
がわかつた。 相変化インク及びインクの基材成分の耐久性に
関して試験された別の物理的性質は、オフセツ
ト・トランスフア(offset trnsfer)である。こ
の性質は、印刷物をその上その上と積み上げたと
き、隣り合わせになつた別の基層に、外気または
上昇させた温度にて、印刷された相変化インク
が、被着するかどうかを試験するためのブロツキ
ングテスト(offsetting)によつて評価すること
ができる。このブロツキングテストは、基材成分
によつてつくられた相変化インクを紙又は薄いフ
イルム基層に印刷し、これをマニラ・フオルダ
(manila folder)の中に置き、8.5インチの幅と
11インチの長さの1ポンドのアルミ片の下にお
き、10ポンドブロツクの荷重を均等にかけること
によつて行う。これらの印刷サンプルは、70℃の
一定温度の炉のなかに24時間いれる。相変化イン
クのの印刷サンプルは、上述のブロツキングテス
トに供されたが、オフセツト、拡散、被着の兆候
は見られなかつた。 相変化インクのもう一つの大切な性質は、粘性
である。溶融したインクの粘性は、インクジエツ
ト装置と適合しなければならず、インクの他の物
理的性質と条件の折り合いを付けなければならな
い。発明の目的のためには、相変化インクの粘性
は、大きな円錐を有するフエランテイ・シヤーレ
イ・コーン・プレート(Ferranti−Shirley Cone
Plate)粘性計によつて測定される。相変化イン
クの基材成分の粘性は、150℃において、また本
発明のインク成分に関しては、約5から30cpsが
適当であり、さらに好適には約9から12cpsであ
る。 相変化インクの基材成分、及び最終的にはこれ
によつて生成するインクの粘性は、粘性調整剤の
添加によつて約10から20%減少させることができ
る。この調整剤として好適な材料は、脂肪族のケ
トン、より好適にはステアロン(stearon)を10
重量%未満の添加としたものである。 相変化インクの基材成分は、これと着色剤とを
組み合わせることによつてインクとなる。好適に
は、減法混色の原色の相変化インクの組は、イン
ク基材成分と、交換可能な減法混色の原色着色剤
との組合わせによつて形成される。本発明の減法
混色の原色によつて着色された相変化インクは、
四つの染料成分からなる。すなわち、シアン、マ
ゼンタ、イエロウ、そして黒である。好適には、
用いられている減法混色の原色は、カラーインデ
クス(C.I.)の油溶性染料または分散染料のいず
れでもよい。なんらかのカラーインデクスの塩基
性染料を採用すると、この塩基性染料と同モルの
ステアリン酸ナトリウムを相変化インク基材成分
に添加することによつて、油溶性染料を本質的に
発生させることになり、うまくいつてきた。酸性
染料及び直接染料は、ある程度までは、交換可能
であることがわかつている。 例 1 この例は、好適な相変化インク基材成分を用い
た減法混色の原色の好適な相変化インクの製造方
法を示すものである。より詳しくいうと、減法混
色の原色の固体状相変化インクの固まりは、以下
の方法にて製造する。ケママイド(Kemamide)
S−180を56グラム、ユニレツヅ(Unirez)X37
−523−235(ユニオンキヤツプ社製造で、二量体
酸1モル、エチレンジアミン2モル、ステアリン
酸2モルからなる二量体酸ベースのテトラアミド
材料)30グラム、フオーラル105を10グラム、サ
ンテイサイザ278を4グラム、及びイントラサー
ム・イエロウ(Intratherm Yellow)346の黄色
着色剤(Crompton and Knowles,C.I.Disperse
Yellow 238)を1グラム、これらを500mlのピー
カーにいれ、かきまぜながら150℃まで加熱する。
材料が均一になると、細かいステンレススチール
のメツシユスクリーンを含む加熱したフアネルに
よつて、溶融インクをろ過する。ろ過したもの
を、鋳型の中に注ぎ、固体化させる。黄色染料の
固体インクの固まりができあがる。 上述の手続きは、黄色染料を、インクジエツト
カラープリントに必要な他の原色に置き換えて、
以下に述べるようにくりかえされる。2グラムの
ネプチユーンレツドベースNB543(BASF,C.I.
Solvent Red49)によつてマゼンタの固体インク
の固まりを作る。2.4グラムのネオープンブルー
FF−4012原色シアン着色剤(BASF、カラーイ
ンデクス番号は、まだ認可されていない)によつ
てシアンの固体インクの固まりをつくる。3グラ
ミムのランプロノールブラツクBR黒色着色剤
(ICI、C.I. Solvent Black 35)によつて黒色に
固体インクの固まりを作る。 例 2 この例は、相変化インク、及びインク成分の明
度を向上させ、しかも本発明の相変化インク成分
の彩度を向上させる。 2インチ角の光透過性ガラス板を、その端部に
おいて、紫外線硬化性のエポキシ樹脂によつて接
合させ、他端は解放したままにする。板の面が約
20ミクロンの幅をもつて離間するように板を接合
し、解放端にて約3/16インチのオフセツトを与
え、挿入端を形成する。イエロウ、マゼンタ、シ
アンの例1でのべた各相変化インクの固まりのサ
ンプルの各々は、この挿入端の一つの上に配置す
る。ここで板を106℃まで加熱する。この温度に
おいて、インクは溶融し、毛管現象によつて板の
面の間の空間に向かつて入つていく。従つて、相
変化インクが冷却されると、実質的に均一な厚さ
の相変化インクが生成される。各原色における透
過性スペクトラムの試験データを、下記の表1に
示す。(測定条件は、イルミネイトCが、観測者
に対して2℃の角度にあり、小さい面積の窓があ
り、鏡のような面となつていて、波長の間隔は
10nmである。)
変化インクの媒体の成分及びこの媒体を用いた相
変化インクに関する。 〔従来の技術及び発明が解決しようとする課題〕 一般的に言つて、相変化インクは、外気の温度
のときは、固体であるが、インクジエツトプリン
タの駆動温度まで上昇させると液体となる。駆動
温度において液体となつたインク滴は、プリンタ
から噴出し、様々な印刷媒体の表面にインク滴が
接すると、直ちに固体と化したインク滴となつ
て、所定のパターンを形成する。 相変化インクは、輸送するときとか、長期間保
管しておくときなど、室温では固体のままである
点が好ましい。また、インクの蒸発に起因するノ
ズルのつまりに関した問題は、大幅に改善され、
これによりインクジエツトによる印刷の信頼性が
向上する。さらに、インク滴は基層と接触すると
ただちに固体化するので印刷媒体上でのインクの
にじみは防止されドツトの質も向上する。 インクジエツト印刷のための相変化インクにお
ける当初の従来例は、静電偏向型の印刷装置によ
る単色インクジエツトであつた。このように、例
えば、米国特許第3653932号に、セバシン酸のジ
エステルによるインク基材(インクの着色剤を溶
かす媒体となる材料を基材と呼ぶことにする。)
を採用した低温度溶融インク(30℃から50℃)が
ある。同様なプロセスとしては、米国特許第
3715219号に、パラフインアルコールを基材とし
た低温度溶融インク(30℃から60℃)がある。し
かしながら、低温度溶融相変化インクが基層上の
印刷に用いられると、オフセツト問題が生じる。
すなわち、これらのインクによつてできた印刷基
層は、印刷したあと積み上げたりして保存してい
る間に、たがいに被着してしまう。特に気温が高
いときなどそうである。 米国特許第4390369号及び米国特許第4484948号
は、木蝋、カンデリラ蝋、カルナウバ蝋などの天
然蝋をインク基材として採用した単色相変化イン
クに関する方法を記述している。このインクは、
ドロツプ・オン・デマンド・インクジエツトプリ
ンタによつて、65℃から75℃の温度で印刷に供さ
れる。米国特許第4659383号では、C20−24アシ
ドまたはアルコール、ケトン、及びアクリル酸可
塑剤樹脂をインク基材とした単色インク成分を開
示している。これらの単色インク成分は、その印
刷物が人手をへたり折り曲げられたりして汚れた
場合、これに対して耐性を持つていない。 日本の特願昭53−128053号では、アセトアミド
のような室温では固体であるアミドが印刷インク
として用いられている。米国特許第4684956号は、
合成の微晶蝋(ハイドロカーボン蝋)及び微晶ポ
リエチレン蝋を用いた単色相変化インクを開示し
ている。これの溶融状態の成分は、ドロツプオン
デマンドのインクジエツト応用技術を用いた様々
な多孔性又は非多孔性基層に対して適用可能であ
る。 最後に、ヨーロツパ特許第0187352号及びヨー
ロツパ特許第0206286号では、カラーの相変化イ
ンクを扱つている。これらの第1の応用例では、
インク基材は、脂肪酸、熱可塑性ポリエチレン、
及び相変化材料から成つている。また第2の応用
例では、熱硬化性樹脂のペアのアルコール部分、
有機溶媒の混合物(O型とP型のトルエンスルホ
ンアミド)及び染料から成つている。 オーバーヘツドプロジエクシヨンによりカラー
画像を表示するための光を透過する媒体上に、カ
ラーのインクジエツトプリントを行う場合は、以
前から問題があつた。たとえば、水性インクの場
合、高品質の画像を形成するためには、液状のイ
ンクを吸収させるために光透過性媒体上に特別の
コーテイングを施さねばならない。例えば、米国
特許第4503111号、4547405号、4555437号を参照
されたい。相変化インクによるジエツト印刷に用
いられる印刷フイルム上に特別なコーテイングが
必要でないとしても、これまでのカラーの相変化
インクは、実質的に均一の厚さの光透過性印刷媒
体上に印刷するときは、その光透過性に線形性が
なかつた。従つて、オーバーヘツドプロジエクシ
ヨン技術では、カラー画像の表示のためにあまり
効果的に利用できなかつた。 そこで、本発明の目的は、相変化インクを用い
て所定のパターンに、実質的に均一な厚さの薄い
フイルム上に鮮明にカラー印刷することができ、
例えば3M社の413オーバーヘツドプロジエクタの
ようなオーバーヘツドプロジエクタによつて、可
視像を投射することができ、そのときの光透過性
に線形性があるような相変化インクを提供するこ
とである。 本発明の他の目的は、比較的高い温度におい
て、単一の溶融点を有し、耐久性のある相変化イ
ンクを提供することにある。 〔課題を解決するための手段及び作用〕 本発明の相変化インク基材成分及びこれによる
相変化インクは、上述の従来の相変化インクの問
題を解決する。 本発明の基材成分は、交換のきく着色材と組合
わされ、本発明の相変化インクとなる。この相変
化インク基材成分の、実質的に均一な厚さの薄い
フイルム、及びこれからできるインクは、高い段
階の明度及び彩度を有している。インク基材の実
質的に均一な厚みの薄い層は、やはり直線的な光
透過性を有する。 好適には、相変化インク基材成分は、脂肪性ア
ミドを含む材料から成つている。本発明の相変化
インク基材成分を作る工程は、脂肪性アミドを含
む材料を用いる工程を含み、この脂肪性アミドを
含む材料を、交換のきく着色剤と組み合わせる新
規な工程も含んでいる。脂肪性アミドを含む材料
とは、典型的には、テトラアミド材料及びモノア
ミド材料である。 本発明のその他の目的、特徴、及び利点は、以
下の好適な実施例による詳細な説明により明らか
になる。 〔実施例〕 本発明は、相変化インクを製造するのに有用な
相変化インク基材成分に関する。本発明の相変化
インク基材成分は、典型的には、脂肪性アミドを
含む材料から成る。本発明の相変化インクの脂肪
性アミドを含む材料は、好適にはテトラアミド材
料である。相変化インクの基材をつくるのに好適
なテトラアミド材料は、好適には脂肪酸、ジアミ
ン(エチレンジアミド)及び二量体酸の反応生成
物を含む二量体酸ベースのテトラアミドである。
炭素原子を10から20含む脂肪酸は、二量体酸ベー
スのテトラアミドの生成に用いるのが好ましい。
二量体酸ベースのテトラアミドは、ユニオンキヤ
ンプ社にて製造されており、エチレンジアミン、
二量体酸、及び以下の脂肪酸から成つている。即
ちデカン酸(ユニオンキヤンプ X3202−23)、
ミリスチン酸(ユニオンキヤンプX3202−56)、
ステアリン酸(ユニオンキヤンプ X3138−43、
X3164−23、X3202−44、X3202−46、X3222−
65、X3261−37、X3261−53、X3290−72)、ドコ
サン酸(ユニオンキヤンプ X3202−36)であ
る。本発明の目的のために、もつとも好適な二量
体酸ベースのテトラアミドは、二量体酸、エチレ
ンジアミン及びステアリン酸が化学量論的に1:
2:2の比のときの反応生成物である。ステアリ
ン酸は、好適な脂肪酸の生成物である。これは、
二量体酸及びエチレンジアミンとともにあるこれ
の付加物は、最も粘性の少ない二量体酸ベースの
テトラアミドを有するからである。その成分は、
もつとも入手しやすく、従つてコストが低い。 この脂肪性アミドを含む材料は、モノアミドを
含んでもよい。実際、この好適な例では、相変化
インクの基体成分は、テトラアミド成分とモノア
ミド成分の両方を含んでいる。このモノアミド成
分は、典型的には1次または2次モノアミドを含
んでよい。しかし、2次モノアミドのほうが好ま
しい。ウイコ・ケミカル・カンパニによつて製造
されているケマミド・S(Kemamido S)よう
な、1次モノアミドであるステアラミドは、採用
可能である。2次モノアミドであるベヘニールベ
ヘナミド(ケマミドEX−666)、ステアリルステ
アラミド(ケマミドS−180及びケマミドEX−
672)は、みなウイコ・ケミカル・カンパニによ
つて製造されているが、大変有用なモノアミドで
ある。しかしながら、ステアリルステアラミド
は、本発明の相変化インク基体成分をつくるうえ
で選り抜きのモノアミドである。 本発明の好適な2次モノアミド成分を記述する
もうひとつの方法は、構造式によるものである。
いつそう詳しくいうと、2次モノアミド成分は、
以下の構造式によつて表される成分を含んでい
る。 ここでxは5から21までの整数、 yは11から43までの整数、 aは6から22までの整数、 bは13から45までの整数である。 本発明の脂肪性アミドを含む材料の好適例は、
互いに物理的互換性のある複数の脂肪酸材料から
成つている。典型的には、複数の脂肪性アミド成
分が、相変化インクの基材成分として採用されて
も、この基材成分は、実質的に融点が一つしかな
い。この相変化インクの基材成分の融点は、好適
には、少なくとも約70℃、より好適には、少なく
とも約80℃、もつとも好適には少なくとも約85℃
である。 好適な相変化インク基材成分は、テトラアミド
及びモノアミドからなる。好適な実施例における
モノアミドに対するテトラアミドの重量比は、
2:1から1:10であり、より好適には、約1:
1から1:3である。 相変化インクの基材成分に一層の柔軟性と接着
性とを付加するために、接着性付与剤を採用して
もよい。好適な接着性付与剤は、脂肪性アミド成
分材料と交換可能なものである。これらの中に
は、例えば、水素と化合したアビエチン(樹脂)
酸のグリセリン・エステルであるフオーラル85
(Foral 85)、水素と化合したアビエチン(樹脂)
酸のペンタエリトリトール・エステルであるフオ
ーラル105(Foral 105)があつて、いずれもハー
クルス・ケミカル・カンパニによつて製造されて
いる。更にネビル・ケミカル・カンパニによつて
製造されている合成ポリテルペン樹脂であるネブ
タツク100(Nevtac 100)及びネブタツク80
(Nevtac 80)、更にグツドイヤー・ケミカル・カ
ンパニによつて製造されている調整された合成ポ
リテルペン樹脂であるウイングタツク86
(Wingtack 86)がある。しかしながら、フオー
ラル105は、本発明の相変化インク基材成分を作
るうえで、えりぬきの粘着性付与剤である。 本発明の相変化インクの基材成分を形成するた
めに加えることの可能な成分は、可塑剤であつ
て、これは、基材成分と協同して柔軟性を増すと
ともに溶融状態における粘性を低下させる。可塑
剤は、本発明の成分中とくに好ましいものである
ことがわかつており、フタル酸ジオクチル、フタ
ル酸ジウンデシル、フタル酸アルキルベンゼン
(サンテイサイザ278)、リン酸トリフエニルがあ
り、みなモンサント・ケミカル・カンパニーによ
つて製造されている。更に、FMCコーポレーシ
ヨンによつて製造されているリン酸トリブトキシ
ルエチル(KP−140)、モフレツクス・ケミカ
ル・カンパニによつて製造されているフタル酸ジ
シクロヘキシル(モフレツクス150)及びコダツ
クによつて製造されているトリオクチル・トリメ
リテートなどもある。しかしながら、本発明の相
変化インクの基材成分を製造するには、サンテイ
サイザ278が可塑剤としては最良である。 この相変化インクの基材成分には、その他の成
分を付加してもよい。典型的な相変化インクの化
学成分では、酸化防止剤が基材成分の退色を防止
するために用いられる。好適な酸化防止剤として
は、チバガイギー社製造のイアガノツクス1010、
ユニローヤルカンパニ製造のノーガード76、ノー
ガード512、ノーガード524を含むことができる
が、最も好適な酸化防止剤は、ノーガード524で
ある。 一つの好適な例としては、相変化インク基材成
分は、テトラアミドとモノアミド成分、粘着性付
与剤、可塑剤、及び粘性調整剤を含んでいる。相
変化インクの基材成分における成分構成比の好適
な範囲は、以下のようになる。テトラアミドの構
成比が、約10から50重量%、モノアミドの構成比
が、約30から80重量%、粘着付与剤の構成比が、
約0から25重量%、可塑剤の構成比が、約0から
25重量%、粘着調整剤の構成比が0から10重量%
である。 すでに指摘したように、相変化インク基材成分
から作られた本発明の相変化インクは、優れた物
理的性質を呈する。例えば、本発明の相変化イン
クは、従来の相変化インクとは異なり、実質的に
均一な厚みの薄いフイルム上に用いられるとき、
高い水準の明度と、色相と、直線的な光透過性を
発揮するので、オーバーヘツドプロジエクシヨン
技術を用いてカラー画像を構成できる。 本発明に用いられた相変化インクの各伝達スペ
クトラムは、市販の分光光度計を用いて測定され
た。この分光光度計による測定は、この装置の製
造者が提供している適切な校正方法を用い、
ASTM E805(アメリカ材料試験協会 E805の
「材料の色及び色の違いを測定するときの装置を
用いた標準的な方法」に従い行つた。本発明の測
色上の全般的な性質を検証し、定量化するため
に、測定によつて得られたデータは、ASTM
E308((CIEシステムを用いた対象物の色を特定す
るための標準的な方法)にしたがつて、三刺激の
統合の手法を用いて整頓し、各相変化インクサン
プルの1976CIE L*(明度)、a*(赤色度−緑
色度)、b*(黄色度−青色度)、及び
(CIELAB)値を測定した。さらに、CIELABの
精神測定学(Psychometric Chroma)上の値、
すなわちC*ab、更にCIELABの精神測定上の
色相角(Hue Angle)であるhを、出版物
CIE15.2測色学(1986年ウイーン、CIEセントラ
ルビユーロー刊、第2版)の内容に従つて計算し
た。 従来の相変化インクとは異なり、本発明の相変
化インク基材成分の性質は、実質的に均一な厚さ
の薄いフイルム上で、比較的高いL*の値を呈す
ることである。本発明の相変化インクの基材成分
は、約20ミクロンの厚み、好適には少なくとも約
65ミクロン、さらに好適には少なくとも約75ミク
ロン、もつとも好適には少なくとも約85ミクロン
の厚みをもつ実質的に均一な厚さの薄いフイルム
上で、ある明度を呈する。 この方法で作られた相変化インクは、実質的に
均一な厚さの薄いフイルム上で、比較的高いL*
の値に加えて、比較的高いC*ab値を有する。
従来の相変化インクは、実質的に均一な厚さの薄
いフイルム上でさえ、光透過性が極めて僅かしか
線形性を示さない。この相変化インク成分は、一
つのC*ab値を示し、これは、厚みが約20ミク
ロンの実質的に均一な薄いフイルム上で、減法混
色の原色の黄色、マゼンタ、シアンの相変化イン
ク成分が示すものである。これらの値は、好適に
は、黄色のインク成分については、少なくとも50
であり、マゼンタインク成分については少なくと
も50であり、シアンインク成分については、少な
くとも30である。一層好適には、C*ab値の減
法混色における値は、黄色、マゼンタ、シアンの
各いろについてそれぞれ少なくとも60、60、35で
ある。さらにもつとも好適には、これらのC*
ab値は、夫々67、69、40である。 黒の相変化インク成分の光透過性のレベルは、
このときの色の強度を最大化させるために最低と
なることが重要である。従つて、黒色相変化イン
クにおける約20ミクロンの厚みの実質的に均一な
薄いフイルム上でのL*値は、約35を超えないこ
とが好ましく、より好適には約30を、さらに最も
好適には約25を超えないことが望ましい。 各相変化インク及びインクの基材成分は、きわ
めて耐久性がある。耐久性の一つの目安は、対摩
耗性である。本発明の目的のためには、CS−10
の型式の研磨用ホイールに500グラムの荷重をか
けたテレダイン・テイバー・アブレイダ
(Teledyne Taber Abrader)モデル5130を用い
て、本発明の相変化インク基材成分からつくられ
たインクの印刷サンプルを試験することによつて
測定する。この研磨用ホイールは、各サンプルの
研磨を行つたあとS−11の再研磨デイスクを用い
て再研磨される。紙に印刷されたサンプルは、
ASTM D4060−84(テイバー・アブレイダによ
る有機コーテイングの耐摩耗性の標準的な試験方
法)に従つて試験する。光透過性の薄いフイルム
に印刷されたサンプルは、ASTM D1044−85
(透明プラスチツク表面の耐摩耗性の標準的な試
験方法)に従つて試験する。印刷サンプルは上述
のように試験され、優れた耐摩耗性を呈すること
がわかつた。 相変化インク及びインクの基材成分の耐久性に
関して試験された別の物理的性質は、オフセツ
ト・トランスフア(offset trnsfer)である。こ
の性質は、印刷物をその上その上と積み上げたと
き、隣り合わせになつた別の基層に、外気または
上昇させた温度にて、印刷された相変化インク
が、被着するかどうかを試験するためのブロツキ
ングテスト(offsetting)によつて評価すること
ができる。このブロツキングテストは、基材成分
によつてつくられた相変化インクを紙又は薄いフ
イルム基層に印刷し、これをマニラ・フオルダ
(manila folder)の中に置き、8.5インチの幅と
11インチの長さの1ポンドのアルミ片の下にお
き、10ポンドブロツクの荷重を均等にかけること
によつて行う。これらの印刷サンプルは、70℃の
一定温度の炉のなかに24時間いれる。相変化イン
クのの印刷サンプルは、上述のブロツキングテス
トに供されたが、オフセツト、拡散、被着の兆候
は見られなかつた。 相変化インクのもう一つの大切な性質は、粘性
である。溶融したインクの粘性は、インクジエツ
ト装置と適合しなければならず、インクの他の物
理的性質と条件の折り合いを付けなければならな
い。発明の目的のためには、相変化インクの粘性
は、大きな円錐を有するフエランテイ・シヤーレ
イ・コーン・プレート(Ferranti−Shirley Cone
Plate)粘性計によつて測定される。相変化イン
クの基材成分の粘性は、150℃において、また本
発明のインク成分に関しては、約5から30cpsが
適当であり、さらに好適には約9から12cpsであ
る。 相変化インクの基材成分、及び最終的にはこれ
によつて生成するインクの粘性は、粘性調整剤の
添加によつて約10から20%減少させることができ
る。この調整剤として好適な材料は、脂肪族のケ
トン、より好適にはステアロン(stearon)を10
重量%未満の添加としたものである。 相変化インクの基材成分は、これと着色剤とを
組み合わせることによつてインクとなる。好適に
は、減法混色の原色の相変化インクの組は、イン
ク基材成分と、交換可能な減法混色の原色着色剤
との組合わせによつて形成される。本発明の減法
混色の原色によつて着色された相変化インクは、
四つの染料成分からなる。すなわち、シアン、マ
ゼンタ、イエロウ、そして黒である。好適には、
用いられている減法混色の原色は、カラーインデ
クス(C.I.)の油溶性染料または分散染料のいず
れでもよい。なんらかのカラーインデクスの塩基
性染料を採用すると、この塩基性染料と同モルの
ステアリン酸ナトリウムを相変化インク基材成分
に添加することによつて、油溶性染料を本質的に
発生させることになり、うまくいつてきた。酸性
染料及び直接染料は、ある程度までは、交換可能
であることがわかつている。 例 1 この例は、好適な相変化インク基材成分を用い
た減法混色の原色の好適な相変化インクの製造方
法を示すものである。より詳しくいうと、減法混
色の原色の固体状相変化インクの固まりは、以下
の方法にて製造する。ケママイド(Kemamide)
S−180を56グラム、ユニレツヅ(Unirez)X37
−523−235(ユニオンキヤツプ社製造で、二量体
酸1モル、エチレンジアミン2モル、ステアリン
酸2モルからなる二量体酸ベースのテトラアミド
材料)30グラム、フオーラル105を10グラム、サ
ンテイサイザ278を4グラム、及びイントラサー
ム・イエロウ(Intratherm Yellow)346の黄色
着色剤(Crompton and Knowles,C.I.Disperse
Yellow 238)を1グラム、これらを500mlのピー
カーにいれ、かきまぜながら150℃まで加熱する。
材料が均一になると、細かいステンレススチール
のメツシユスクリーンを含む加熱したフアネルに
よつて、溶融インクをろ過する。ろ過したもの
を、鋳型の中に注ぎ、固体化させる。黄色染料の
固体インクの固まりができあがる。 上述の手続きは、黄色染料を、インクジエツト
カラープリントに必要な他の原色に置き換えて、
以下に述べるようにくりかえされる。2グラムの
ネプチユーンレツドベースNB543(BASF,C.I.
Solvent Red49)によつてマゼンタの固体インク
の固まりを作る。2.4グラムのネオープンブルー
FF−4012原色シアン着色剤(BASF、カラーイ
ンデクス番号は、まだ認可されていない)によつ
てシアンの固体インクの固まりをつくる。3グラ
ミムのランプロノールブラツクBR黒色着色剤
(ICI、C.I. Solvent Black 35)によつて黒色に
固体インクの固まりを作る。 例 2 この例は、相変化インク、及びインク成分の明
度を向上させ、しかも本発明の相変化インク成分
の彩度を向上させる。 2インチ角の光透過性ガラス板を、その端部に
おいて、紫外線硬化性のエポキシ樹脂によつて接
合させ、他端は解放したままにする。板の面が約
20ミクロンの幅をもつて離間するように板を接合
し、解放端にて約3/16インチのオフセツトを与
え、挿入端を形成する。イエロウ、マゼンタ、シ
アンの例1でのべた各相変化インクの固まりのサ
ンプルの各々は、この挿入端の一つの上に配置す
る。ここで板を106℃まで加熱する。この温度に
おいて、インクは溶融し、毛管現象によつて板の
面の間の空間に向かつて入つていく。従つて、相
変化インクが冷却されると、実質的に均一な厚さ
の相変化インクが生成される。各原色における透
過性スペクトラムの試験データを、下記の表1に
示す。(測定条件は、イルミネイトCが、観測者
に対して2℃の角度にあり、小さい面積の窓があ
り、鏡のような面となつていて、波長の間隔は
10nmである。)
本発明による相変化インクは、フイルムなどに
印刷された場合、光透過性に線形性があるので、
オーバーヘツドプロジエクタ用のフイルム等への
印刷に好適である。 また、本発明による相変化インクは、溶融点が
比較的高く、耐久性があるので、これの印刷物を
堆積しても、印刷物間に転写が起こりにくい。

Claims (1)
- 1 相変化インクの基材成分として、脂肪性アミ
ドを用いることを特徴とする相変化インク。
