These chemicals include antimony compounds, organohalogen compounds, organic or inorganic phosphorus compounds, such as water-soluble or insoluble ammonium polyphosphates, which can be cured in textiles by heating (UK). Patent No. 1
No. 504507). In the treatment of many textiles, particularly upholstery, it is important that the flame retardant treatment does not substantially affect the appearance or feel of the textile. For this reason, many upholstery fabrics are flame retardant treated by back coating with antimony oxides and organic bromine compounds, among others. These compounds are environmentally problematic and are only useful for lightweight textiles.

, 0.5-3 or 1.5-7 g/100 g water. Here, the solubility was determined by the Manders test method for ammonium polyphosphate specified by Manders Paint Company, which will be described below. It is thought that there are some things that truly dissolve and some things that do not dissolve. The soluble components therein are added to or eluted out by adding water, yielding insoluble components with a very high surface area, eg a very fine powder and/or a honeycomb structure. It consists of mono- or diammonium polyphosphate alone or mixed with phosphorus pentoxide,
Obtained by heating at ~400°C. phosphorus pentoxide can be at least partially replaced with phosphoric acid;
The source of ammonia may be urea (UK Patent Nos. 1103772, 1184878, 13098

amine oxide containing 4 alkyl or benzyl groups. It is also possible to use mixtures of two or more of the surfactants mentioned above. In particular, it is possible to use mixtures of nonionic surfactants with cationic and/or amphoteric and/or semipolar surfactants or with anionic surfactants. This surfactant is normally present in the resin-containing emulsion, but may be added separately, additionally or alternatively, if desired.

This condensed phosphoric acid usually has an average degree of condensation greater than 3, for example from 3 to 30, and is linear, branched, or cyclic. Preferably, the salt contains nitrogen and phosphorus in an atomic ratio of 0.
5 to 2:1, especially about 1:1. The polyphosphate salt is preferably a mixture of a number of ammonium salts of polyphosphoric acid, which comprises an aqueous solution of phosphoric acid containing 80-86% by weight of phosphorus pentoxide and ammonia or its basic derivatives. 15-70℃, e.g. 1
It is obtained by reacting at 5-40°C and pH 4-12, such as 5-12, such as 5-9, 6-8, or 6.5-7.5. Ammonium polyphosphate mixtures that can be used are described in British Patent No. 15
No. 04507 and can be manufactured as described therein. The ammonium polyphosphate usually has a (real) water solubility in water at 20° C. of at least 50 g/l, for example 100 g/l. An example of a suitable polyphosphate is that sold as AMGARD LR2 by Albright and Wilson mixed with urea. The composition typically contains 0-10%, such as 2-8%, such as 4-6%, of water-soluble ammonium polyphosphate.

It is converted into an injectable emulsion. Stable emulsions are water-in-oil emulsions, preferably oil-in-water. When contacted with cotton fabric under the influence of gravity alone, the composition will not pass through the fabric and will not rapidly lose moisture into the fabric. When this composition is brought into contact with a fabric and a shear force is applied, e.g. by the pressure of a knife edge, the composition is stressed through the fabric, where it again gels. , passing through the fabric and not seeping out the other side. The components of this composition can be prepared by mixing them in any order, but typically the resin is first followed by the insoluble ammonium polyphosphate, then preferably the soluble ammonium polyphosphate and the carbamic acid derivative, and then the carbamic acid derivative. It is best prepared by mixing in this order: first, water, and finally any excess surfactant. Mixing is usually done with a high speed stirrer.

The fibers used to form at least a portion of the fabric can be of core-sheath construction if desired, but preferably are not. The fabric may have a union structure, e.g. at least one
The weft threads and especially the warp threads can be the main component (50-100%) of the synthetic polymer fiber. Warp threads mainly composed of polyester or nylon and weft threads of cotton are particularly preferred, with embossed cotton patterns and/or colored cotton fabrics being preferred. The flame retardant compositions of the invention and the methods of the invention can be applied to at least semi-permanent, preferably textured, but especially synthetic polymeric or cellulosic materials, such as bonded fabrics, on the surface of which are non-uniform. (hereinafter referred to as a different surface fabric) can be further uniformly imparted with flame retardancy. Of particular interest are heterogeneous fabrics that have a front surface that has a different (usually lower) proportion of cellulosic to synthetic material than the back surface, and that also typically have a significant area of synthetic polymer fibers on the surface. (e.g., 50-100%), and typically has a significant area (e.g., 50-100%) of fibers of cellulosic material on the surface. An example of such a different surface fabric is one having a warp of polyester and a weft of dyed cotton, in particular a weft of cotton colored in one or more different colors, and a warp of polyester on which the dyed A fabric having a front side with a pattern of cotton and a back side with a substantially unpatterned cotton surface. Such a different surface fabric can be used as an interior decoration fabric. Other useful fabrics are pile fabrics, particularly those with a cotton-based fabric back and an acrylic pile surface. In cases where the bonded fabric and the pile fabric each have a front side and a back side, the composition is applied from the back side of the fabric.

Can be dried at 0°C. Drying can be carried out in any conventional dryer, such as an air stream dryer or a tenter. If desired, the impregnated substrate after drying is subsequently heated to at least 80°C, such as at least 120°C, such as from 120 to 170°C, preferably 1
It is thermally cured by heating at a temperature of 40 to 170°C or 140 to 165°C, for example, for 6 to 0.5 minutes. Combinations of longer times and higher temperatures are preferably avoided to reduce the tendency for discoloration. The drying and curing steps are preferably combined.

It is better to do so on both surfaces to ensure heating. Thus, the substrate is preferably continuously passed over a tenter through a thermostatic oven that allows a flow of hot air to pass through the top and bottom of the substrate. The tenter has minimal charring,
Cures most evenly. In the case of a tenter oven, the curing temperature of the substrate is substantially the same as the hot air flow temperature. Typically, at the end of curing, the substrate is rapidly cooled by passing into or accessing chilled air.

Solids content of 30-60% for pile fabrics, e.g. 35-45%, and 50-60% for bonded or other non-pile fabrics.
60% and usually contains 3-10% P, preferably 5-8% P. The finished fabric has reduced flammability compared to the untreated substrate and is able to pass the BS5852 test for ignition sources 0 and 1. According to BS5651 excluding final ironing
After one leaching in hard water at 40°C, the fabric can pass the BS 5852 partial flammability test with ignition sources 0 and 1. 4 according to BS5651 excluding final ironing
The fabric after one leaching in hard water at 0°C can pass the flammability test of BS5852 Part 1 with 0 and 1 ignition sources. The reduced flame retardant finished product can withstand 1 to 3 lines in soft water at 74° C. or 10 dry cleaning operations, depending on the key properties of the resin. The finished fabric typically has a surface feel not unlike that of an untreated fabric and does not exhibit salt deposits or resin marks on the surface. The color is also not much different from untreated fabric. In particular, the synergistic combination of components (i) to (iV) with components (V), (Vi) and (Vii) is particularly advantageous when the composition is applied to the back side of a fiber having a front and a back side. Treated fibers with improved flame retardancy can be obtained without exhibiting any adhesion of flame retardants on their surfaces. A small amount of water and any water-soluble ammonium polyphosphate, added by itself or as part of the water-insoluble polyphosphate, migrates from the back side towards the surface, but never reaches the surface. All parts and percentages herein are by weight.

The composition was spread on the fabric with a knife and pressed into the fabric; in the case of fabrics B, D, E and I, the composition was applied to the back side of the fabric. In this procedure, the lower support surface of the fabric became cool but not wet, indicating that no moisture was seeping out from the underside of the fabric. Subsequently, the impregnated fabric was heated in a tenter at 150° C. for 90 seconds to perform a combination of drying and curing. Flame retardancy testing was carried out on the finished fabrics after leaching in hard water at 40° C. and subsequent hardening according to BS 5651 Part 1 with the exception of the final ironing. The solubility of the water-insoluble ammonium polyphosphates used in this specification and examples was determined by the Manders test. The Manders test involves shaking 5 g of the solid with 50 ml of water at ambient temperature, then removing 10 ml of the solution, measuring its weight, and evaporating to dryness to remove the residue. Solubility is given as 10 times the weight of g of residue.
