Description
詳細には、一つのモード寸法の光学ファイバ増幅器を第
二のモード寸法のファイバーを持つ光フアイバー通信シ
ステムへ結合することに関する。
い光学信号を増幅するために希土類元素にてドープされ
たファイバーを使用することは考慮ずべき関心事である
。希土類元素をドープした光学増幅ファイバーは低コス
トで、低ノイズ特性を持ち、偏波に依存しない比較的大
きなバンド幅を持ち、クロストークの問題を持たず、さ
らに、光学通信において使用される波長において比較的
低い挿入損失を持つ。使用においては、希土類にてドー
プされた光学ファイバー増幅器は、端と端とを光学通信
ファイバーへ結合され、そして通常、この希土類元素に
てドープされた光学ファイバー増幅器内においである波
長の弱い光学人力信号が利得を得るために、方向性カブ
ラな通して、横断方向に、レーザー・ダイオード・ポン
プと結合される。この方向性カブラは、ポンプ波長にお
いて高い結合比を持ち、信号波長において低い結合比を
持つように設計される。このポンプ光は、変換されない
ポンプ光がより好都合に送信機の所でろ波されるか、あ
るいは受信機の所でろ波されるかに応して、この信号に
対して同方向に、あるいは逆方向に伝播させられる。コ
ア直径及び屈折率プロフィルは、ドープされない伝送フ
ァイバー及びドープされた増幅ファイバーのモード・サ
イズを決定し、従って、これらファイバーは、必ずしも
同一である必要はない。伝送ファイバーの第一の制約は
構造分散の要件であり、一方、増幅ファイバーにおいて
は、ポンプ・モードと信号モードの重複を最大にする必
要性がある。増幅ファイバーは伝送ファイバーと異なる
モード・サイズを持つため、モードの不整合に起因する
接合点での損失は光密に大きくなる。二つのファイバー
の間でのコア間接合点におけるこの損失を低減するため
に、融合接合点をティパー化することが提案されている
。

を目的とする。本発明においては、異なるモード直径を
持つ一方のファイバーと他方のファイバーの結合が、コ
ア間接合点におけるティパー融合を有するのではなく、

単に述べると、弱い光学信号の増幅を達成するために、
増幅ファイバーがこのシステム内の一つあるいは複数の
位置に挿入される。より具体的には、要求される位置に
おいて、伝送ファイバーが二つの区分を提供するために
切断され、切断された区分が増幅ファイバーに対し横断
方向に結合される。伝送ファイバーの第一区分からの弱
い信号は、第一のエバネセント フィールド タイプの
ファイバー カブラを介して増幅ファイバーに結合され

バー内の信号エネルギーの実質的に全てを伝送ファイバ
ーに結合するように設計され、また増幅ファイバーから
のレーザー・ダイオード・エネルギーが実質的に殆ど伝
送ファイバーに送られないように設計される。伝送ファ
イバーの切断された一方あるいは両端がモニタデバイス
に結合され、例えば、増幅ファイバーの利得を制御する
ために増幅器内へ結合される信号及び/あるいは増幅器
から出る信号の値か検出され、決定される。

ブラを使用することによって、伝送ファイバーと増幅フ
ァイバーとの間の結合損失は、伝送ファイバーのモート
直径 6 と増幅ファイバーのモートとに無関係に最少となる。

Claims (1)
- 【特許請求の範囲】 1、光学通信システムにおいて、該システムが光学信号
を伝送するための伝送ファイバーを含み、該伝送ファイ
バーが、第一のモード直径と、該第一の直径と該第二の
直径とが等しくない、第二のモード直径を持つ、希土類
元素にてドープされた光学増幅ファイバーと、該希土類
元素にてドープされた増幅ファイバーを励起するための
ポンプ・エネルギーのソースと、片方のファイバーが伝
送ファイバーであり他方のファイバーが希土類元素にて
ドープされた光学増幅ファイバーである二つのファイバ
ーとを有するダイクロイックカプラを含み、該カプラの
ファイバーが伝送ファイバー内の信号を増幅ファイバー
に結合するため及び増幅ファイバー内のポンプ・エネル
ギーが伝送ファイバーに結合するのを阻止するために並
列に置かれることを含むことを特徴とする光学通信シス
テム。 2、請求項1に記載された光学通信システムにおいて、
一方のファイバーが伝送ファイバーであり、他方のファ
イバーが希土類にてドープされた光学増幅ファイバーで
ある二つのファイバーから成る第二のダイクロイックカ
プラを含み、該ファイバーが増幅ファイバー内の信号を
伝送ファイバーに結合するため、及び増幅ファイバー内
のポンプ・エネルギーが伝送ファイバーへの結合を阻止
するために並列に位置され、該第一のダイクロイックカ
プラが該増幅ファイバーの一終端に隣接して結合され、
該第二のダイクロイックカプラが該増幅ファイバーの他
端に隣接して結合されることを含むことを特徴とする光
学通信システム。 3、請求項2に記載された光学通信システムにおいて、
該希土類元素にてドープされた増幅ファイバーがエルビ
ウムを含むことを特徴とする光学通信システム。
