[産業上の利用分野]
本発明は液晶電気光学素子に関する。
[従来の技術]
従来のニューツィステッドネマチックモード(以下NT
Nモードと呼ぶ)は、従来のスーパーツィステッドネマ
チックモードに特許■の、素子の外観の色づきを解消し
たもので、特願昭62−121701号で提案されてい
るように、一対の偏光板の間に、表示を行う液晶セル(
以下表示セルと呼ぶ)と、それとは別に光学的異方体を
備えている。

以上の条件のもとで作製した、従来のNTNモードを利
用した液晶電気光学素子は、パネル面に垂直な方向から
測定すると、第11図に示すような電気光学特性が得ら
れる。この特性は非常に急峻であるために、デユーティ
比1/110のマルチプレックス駆動でも、30以上の
コントラスト比が取れる。

[発明が解決しようとする課題]
しかしながら、従来のNTNモードを利用した液晶電気
光学素子には、表示が良好に視認できる視角範囲(以下
、単純に視角と呼ぶ)が狭いという課題がある。

[課題を解決するための手段]
本発明の液晶電気光学素子は、対向する2枚の電極基板
間にねじれ配向したネマチック液晶を挟持してなる液晶
セルと、前記ネマチック液晶以外の光学的異方体と、そ
れらを挟んで両側に配置された一対の偏光板とを備えた
液晶電気光学素子において、前記光学的異方体が、前記
液晶セルの基板表面に対してほぼ垂直な方向に光軸を有
する層と、ほぼ水平な方向に光軸を有する層の少なくと
も2層からなることを特徴とする。

[作用]
従来のNTNモードの補償セルは、パネル面に垂直な方
向の光学補償を主眼として設計されたものであって、そ
れ以外の方向については、充分な補償がなされていなか
った。本発明では、より広い視角範囲にわたって光学補
償を行うために、従来の補償セルとは別に、液晶分子が
基板に対してほぼ垂直に配向した液晶セル(以下垂直補
償セルと呼ぶ)を備えている。

以上述べた実施例においては、表示セルと補償セルのΔ

を用いても、ほぼ同等の効果が得られる。

[発明の効果コ
以上述べたように、本発明によれば、液晶セルの基板表
面に対してほぼ垂直な方向に光軸を有する光学的異方体
を備えることによって、NTNモードの表示の反転を抑
えて、視角を広くするという効果を有する。

Claims (4)
- (1)対向する2枚の電極基板間にねじれ配向したネマ
チック液晶を挟持してなる液晶セルと、前記ネマチック
液晶以外の光学的異方体と、それらを挟んで両側に配置
された一対の偏光板とを備えた液晶電気光学素子におい
て、前記光学的異方体が、前記液晶セルの基板表面に対
してほぼ垂直な方向に光軸を有する層と、ほぼ水平な方
向に光軸を有する層の少なくとも2層からなることを特
徴とする液晶電気光学素子。 - (2)前記光学的異方体の内、前記液晶セルの基板表面
に対してほぼ垂直な方向に光軸を持つ層が、対向する2
枚の基板間に挟持され、垂直配向した液晶であることを
特徴とする請求項1記載の液晶電気光学素子。 - (3)前記光学的異方体の内、前記液晶セルの基板表面
に対してほぼ水平な方向に光軸を持つ層が、対向する2
枚の基板間に挟持され、ねじれ配向した液晶であること
を特徴とする請求項1記載の液晶電気光学素子。 - (4)前記光学的異方体の内、前記液晶セルの基板表面
に対してほぼ水平な方向に光軸を持つ層が、フィルム状
高分子であることを特徴とする請求項1記載の液晶電気
光学素子。
