心臓が血液を送り出す機能を失った場合(停止した心臓の手術、急性心原性ショックなど)、心臓に代わって血液ポンプが用いられ、人体の血液循環の維持が補助されることがある。血液ポンプは、その埋込性や臨床的用途により、埋め込み型血液ポンプと体外血液ポンプに分類されることがある。体内埋め込み型血液ポンプは、患者の体内に埋め込んで一時的または長期的に体内の血液循環を維持することができ、主に末期心不全患者の移植代替治療に使用される。体外血液ポンプは、体外で使用することにより、より少ない外傷で経過的な生命維持や治療を行うことができる。
