Description
まず、第一実施形態の光ファイバの構成を説明する。図1に、本実施形態の光ファイバの構成を説明するための斜視図を示す。図2に、同光ファイバの径方向断面図を示す。図1、図2に示すように、光ファイバ10は、ガラスファイバ20と、金属層30と、DLC層40と、を備えている。ガラスファイバ20は、断面円形状のコア21とその外周を取り囲むクラッド22とを有している。コア21およびクラッド22は、いずれもシリカガラスを主成分としている。クラッド22の外径は、約125μmである。
本実施形態の光ファイバと第一実施形態の光ファイバとの相違点は、DLC層の外側に保護層が配置されている点である。ここでは、主に相違点を説明する。図3に、本実施形態の光ファイバの径方向断面図を示す。図3において、図2と対応する部位については、同じ符号で示す。
以上、本発明の光ファイバを実施する二つの形態について説明した。しかしながら、実施の形態は上記形態に特に限定されるものではない。本発明の光ファイバは、ガラスファイバと、金属層と、DLC層と、を備えるものであり、当業者が行いうる種々の変形的形態、改良的形態で実施することも可能である。
ガラスファイバは、コアとクラッドとから構成され、コアの屈折率はクラッドの屈折率よりも高い。コアおよびクラッドは、シリカガラスを主成分とするが、その材質、寸法などは特に限定されない。ガラスファイバは、シングルモード、マルチモードのいずれでもよい。
金属層は、ガラスファイバの外周を被覆する。金属層は、一層でも複数層から構成されていてもよい。金属層の厚さは特に限定されない。例えば、DLC層の製造過程に起因した熱応力による剥離を抑制する、ガラスファイバの保護効果を高めるなどの観点から、金属層の厚さは0.3μmより大きく、さらには0.5μm以上、1μm以上、1.5μm以上であることが望ましい。他方、光ファイバを高温下で使用した際に、金属層の熱膨張を抑制し、金属層の熱膨張に伴ってDLC層に発生する引張応力を小さくするという観点から、金属層の厚さは10μm以下、さらには7μm以下、4μm以下であることが望ましい。
DLC層は、金属層の表面を被覆する。DLC層の厚さは特に限定されない。例えば、ガラスファイバへの水分および水素の侵入を充分に抑制するという観点から、DLC層の厚さは0.1μm以上、さらには0.5μm以上であることが望ましい。他方、成膜時の効率性を考慮すると、DLC層の厚さは2μm以下、さらには1.5μm以下であることが望ましい。
保護層は、必要に応じてDLC層の表面を被覆するように配置される。保護層は金を有すればよく、金に加えて他の金属を有してもよい。金以外の金属としては、金属層に好適な金属として挙げたニッケル、ニッケル基合金などが挙げられる。保護層の厚さは特に限定されない。例えば、ガラスファイバの保護効果を高めるなどの観点から、保護層の厚さは0.1μm以上、さらには0.5μm以上であることが望ましい。他方、光ファイバを高温下で使用した際の保護層の熱膨張を抑制し、保護層の熱膨張に伴ってDLC層に発生する引張応力を小さくするという観点から、保護層の厚さは、金属層の厚さと合わせて10μm以下、さらには4μm以下であることが望ましい。保護層についても金属層と同様に、PVD法、湿式めっき法などにより形成すればよい。
本発明の光ファイバは、特に高温、高圧などの厳しい環境下で使用する場合に好適な被覆構造を有するが、使用環境などに応じて被覆構造を変更してもよい。
まず、シリカガラスを主成分とするシングルモードのガラスファイバ(外径約125μm)の外周に金めっきを施して、厚さ1.5μmの金属層を形成した。次に、形成した金属層の表面に、アークイオンプレーティング法により、厚さ1μmのDLC層を形成した。DLC層形成時の処理温度は200℃とした。このようにして、金属層とDLC層とが積層された被覆構造を有する光ファイバを製造した。
[サンプルの製造]
金属層を有さない光ファイバのサンプル一つと、先に製造した光ファイバとは金属層の厚さが異なる光ファイバのサンプルを三つ製造した。製造したサンプルにおける金属層の厚さは、0μm(金属層無し)、0.3μm、4μm、15μmである。DLC層の厚さは全て1μmである。光ファイバのサンプルの製造方法は、使用した材料を含めて先に製造した光ファイバの製造方法と同じである。
(1)DLC層の状態
製造した光ファイバのサンプルを光学顕微鏡で観察したところ、金属層が無いサンプルにおいては、DLC層が剥離しており、ガラスファイバも破断していた。すなわち、ガラスファイバの表面に金属層を形成しない場合には、DLC層を形成することはできなかった。また、金属層の厚さが0.3μmのサンプルにおいては、DLC層に部分的な剥離が見られた。これに対して、金属層の厚さが4μm、15μmの各サンプルにおいては、DLC層が剥離することなく均一に形成されていた。
DLC層を均一に形成することができた金属層の厚さが15μmのサンプルを、温度500℃、圧力25MPaの超臨界水中に10時間浸漬した。その後、光学顕微鏡および電子顕微鏡の両方で観察したところ、DLC層に部分的な剥離が見られた。また、上記同様に、金属層の厚さが異なる五つの光ファイバについてFEMによる熱応力解析を行い、DLC層を形成した後、200~600℃の高温に晒した際にDLC層内発生する周方向の応力を計算した。結果、金属層の厚さが大きくなるほど、高温下においてDLC層内に発生する周方向の引張応力は大きくなり、例えば金属層の厚さが15μmの場合には、220℃において引張応力が160MPaを超えた。このように、熱応力解析の結果からも、使用温度に応じて好適な金属層の厚さがあることが確認できた。
DLC層中に発生する周方向の引張応力は、主に金属層の厚さ(d)と熱膨張係数(α)に依存する。金属層の自由伸び量は、「熱膨張係数(α)×厚さ(d)×温度差(ΔT)」により算出することができる。したがって、金属層が金以外の金属を含んで構成される場合の好適な厚さの範囲は、金から構成される場合に設定された好適な厚さの範囲に基づいて、次式(i)~(iii)により算出することができる。

Claims (6)
- 300℃を超える高温下で使用される光ファイバであって、
ガラスファイバと、
該ガラスファイバの外周を被覆する金属層と、
該金属層の表面を被覆するダイヤモンドライクカーボン層と、
を備え、
該金属層の厚さは、0.5μm以上4μm以下であることを特徴とする光ファイバ。 - 前記金属層は一層以上からなり、その少なくとも最外層は、水との反応のギブスエネルギーが正であり、かつ溶融温度が1000℃以上である金属を有する請求項1に記載の光ファイバ。
- 前記金属層は、金を含む層を有する請求項1または請求項2に記載の光ファイバ。
- 前記金属層は、金、ニッケル、およびニッケル基合金から選ばれる一種以上を有する単一層である請求項1ないし請求項3のいずれかに記載の光ファイバ。
- 前記ダイヤモンドライクカーボン層の水素量は10atm%以下である請求項1ないし請求項4のいずれかに記載の光ファイバ。
- さらに、前記ダイヤモンドライクカーボン層の表面を被覆する保護層を備え、該保護層は金を有する請求項1ないし請求項5のいずれかに記載の光ファイバ。
