面上スイッチングモード液晶表示装置の設計条件は、次の通りである。
EZ contrast(Eldim)機器を使用して、面状スイッチングモード液晶表示装置に対して、光の特性を測定した。図2は、Lb contourであって、傾斜角に応じて全方位(phi:0°~360°)でブラック状態での輝度を測定したグラフであり、図3は、Cb contourであって、全方位(phi:0°~360°)でブラック状態での色味を測定したグラフである。一般的に、ブラック状態とは、液晶パネルを駆動したときのブラック画面となる状態を意味し、光特性の評価では、液晶パネルが駆動されていない状態でブラック状態を具現した。表1において、Lb maxは、傾斜角60°で全方位のブラック輝度を測定した値のうちで最大のブラック輝度を示す方位角におけるブラック輝度値を意味する。コントラスト比は、ブラック状態の輝度に対するホワイト状態の輝度と定義されるので、Lb max値が低いほど、視野角でコントラスト比に優れていることを意味する。

Claims (11)
- 上部偏光子、Rin(550)値が310nmないし350nmの範囲内である液晶層を含む面上スイッチングモード液晶パネル、及び下部偏光子を順次に含み、
前記上部偏光子の吸収軸と下部偏光子の吸収軸は、直交し、
前記下部偏光子は、上部偏光子に比べて光源に隣接して配置され、
前記上部偏光子と面上スイッチングモード液晶パネルとの間に、位相差フィルムとして、Rin(450)/Rin(550)値が0.99ないし1.01の範囲内であるフラット分散性を有する正の2軸性位相差フィルムと負のCプレートを含み、
前記正の2軸性位相差フィルムのRin(650)/Rin(550)の値は、0.99ないし1.01の範囲内であり、
前記正の2軸性位相差フィルムは、前記負のCプレートに比べて前記上部偏光子に隣接して配置される、液晶表示装置(Rin(λ)は、λnmの波長に対する液晶層又は位相差フィルムの面内位相差値である)。 - 前記正の2軸性位相差フィルムは、550nmの波長の光に対する面上位相差値が0nmより大きく300nm以下である、請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記正の2軸性位相差フィルムは、下記式2で計算される厚さ方向の位相差値が-300nmないし-40nmである、請求項1または2に記載の液晶表示装置:

式3において、nx、ny、及びnzは、それぞれ位相差フィルムのx軸、y軸及びz軸方向の屈折率であり、前記x軸方向は、位相差フィルムの面方向で遅相軸方向を意味し、前記y軸方向は、位相差フィルムの面方向で進相軸方向を意味し、前記z軸方向は、位相差フィルムの厚さ方向を意味する。 - 前記正の2軸性位相差フィルムの遅相軸は、上部偏光子の吸収軸と平行である、請求項1~4のいずれか一項に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記負のCプレートは、下記の式2で計算される厚さ方向の位相差値が40nmないし130nmである、請求項1~5のいずれか一項に記載の液晶表示装置:

- 前記上部基板と下部基板のいずれかは、カラーフィルタ基板であり、他の一つは、薄膜トランジスタ基板である、請求項7に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記液晶層の下記式2で計算される厚さ方向の位相差値は、0nmないし-40nmである、請求項1~8のいずれか一項に記載の液晶表示装置:
