試験対象の女性18名を、摂取前検査における皮膚水分量(頬)、皮膚水分蒸散量(頬)及び年齢ができるだけ均等になるように2群に分け、それぞれ試験群、比較群とした。試験群には試験品、比較群にはプラセボ品を、1日1回、1gずつ(1日当りのボタンボウフウ加工物の摂取量0.9g)、継続して8週間摂取させた。なお、試験品又はプラセボ品は、100mLの水又はお湯に溶かして飲む方法により経口摂取させた。

図1に角層水分量の変化量を示す。図1の数値は、摂取前の数値を基準とする数値の変化量(平均値)を意味する。図1に示される通り、ボタンボウフウ加工物を経口摂取した試験群では、比較群に比べて、摂取4週後及び8週後における皮膚の角層水分量が高かった。また、試験群では、摂取前に比べて、摂取4週後及び8週後において皮膚の角層水分量が増加する傾向が認められた。
