Description
1.厚いガラスカバーを用いている場合のような、カバー層に発生する欠陥波による防弾面材料の「プリコンディショニング」の多大の軽減、
2.衝撃中の防弾面材料の有効な維持、
3.厚さが5mm以下のカバーガラスの使用による無視可能な重量増加、
4.無研磨防弾面シートの使用、例えば圧延したままのガラス−セラミックの使用が可能であることによる、コスト低減、
5.優れた耐岩石打撃性能、
6.砂漠環境において有益である、改善された高温性能のための外層ガラス層内における太陽熱の吸収及び散逸への潜在能力、
7.カバーガラスと防弾面層の間の加熱素子の配置による、高められた、曇り取り、着氷防止及び曇り止めの効率、
がある。
強い防弾面材料は一般に優れた、硬度及び靱性のような、機械的特性を有する。例えば、コーニング社の9665ガラス−セラミック(GC)はフロートガラスより〜50%高い硬度を有する。高硬度は発射体を破壊するかまたは変形させて貫通をおこりにくくするに役立つ。この理由のため、硬い材料は、防弾面としてはたらくであろう、TAスタックの前面に配されるべきである。2950フィート/秒(〜900m/秒)のV50が得られる代表的構成は、

である。このスタックは18.8ポンド/平方フィート(約94kg/m2)の面密度(AD)を有し、積層の作製において、ガラスがフロートプロセスで溶融スズに接触していた側である、Borofloat層の「スズ」側が飛来する脅威に面する。GC層及びガラス層は市販の接着剤、例えばDeerfield4700またはHuntsman399のような15ミル(380μm)ポリウレタン(PU)接着剤を用いて積層した。以下の実験に示されるように、GC層はスタックの前面になければならない。15.9mmBorofloat層がスタックの前面に配されて防弾面としてはたらき、GC層がその後でスタックの内側に配されていれば、得られるスタック(積層)のV50は〜2650フィート/秒(807.7m/秒)になり、これはGC層が防弾面層である場合に比較して300フィート/秒(91.4m/秒)小さい。
GC層がスタック内に嵌め込まれているかまたは埋め込まれている場合にGC性能が大きく減じられる機構についての正確な説明は現時点では知られていない。考え得る説明の1つは、ステファン・ブレス(Stephan Bless)等,「ガラス内の欠陥波(Failure Waves in Glass)」,Journal of the American Ceramic Society,第75巻、第4号,p.1002〜1104に論じられているような、「欠陥波」に基づく。ブレス等は、ガラス材料の防弾面にかかる衝撃事象が、透明装甲の用途において関心がある代表的な発射体速度で衝突する発射体より高速度でかつ発射体に先行して進む「欠陥波」を、生じさせることを観察した。欠陥波の後方には、引張強度の全喪失及び剪断強度のかなりの低下がある。事実上、欠陥波は発射体の経路において材料を破砕し、したがって発射体は弱化した材料と交接するであろう。ガラス−セラミックが、発射体が最初に交接する材料であれば、相互作用は発射体と「無損傷」のガラス−セラミック間でおこるであろう。弱いガラスカバーは「欠陥波」にプリコンディショニングする時間を与え、よってガラス−セラミックを弱化する。これが正しいとすれば、カバーガラスの厚さは重要な役割を果たし得る。カバーが厚くなるほど、より大きな損傷を与える「欠陥波」が形成され、欠陥波が面するガラスセラミックを欠陥波が弱化する時間が長くなり得、また、その逆も言える。

である。図4〜7の写真から、GC防弾面へのカバーの付加の利点は極めて顕著である。耐すり傷性または重量を全く考慮しなければ。PC(ポリカーボネート)カバーが、その好ましいコスト上の利点のため、望ましい。しかし、TA要件(仕様)に耐すり傷性を加えると、プラスチックベース材料は容易にすり減るという事実により、いかなるプラスチックベースカバー材料も除外される。したがって、ガラスが選ばれる材料となる。薄カバーガラス(<3mm)を選択するか、比較的厚いカバーガラス(>6mm)を選択するかでは、軽量及び有害な弾道衝撃の軽減を考慮して、薄カバーガラス(これらの例においては<1mmカバーガラス)が選ばれた。
カバーガラスの選択に当たって考慮されるべきその他の付随的な要件がある。例えば、
岩石打撃:
TA使用中に遭遇する岩石打撃は、TAのエンドユーザが新しい防弾面構成を採用するであろうより前に、解析及び考察されなければならない。一見して、≦3mmガラス層、特に≦1mmガラス層は、低速大質量の岩石打撃に抗するほど強くはないと思われる。しかし、実際はそうではないことがわかる。0.7mm「Eagle」ガラスカバーの性能を示す図8Bを、6mmBorofloatガラスカバーの性能を示す図8Aと比較すると、〜60〜70マイル/時(96〜112km/時)の範囲の速度で飛来する直径3/4インチ(〜19mm)の鋼球に抗する際に、いずれのガラスも球によって亀裂が入っているが、「Eagle」ガラスカバーでは損傷域がかなり小さく、視界への影響が最小限であることが示された。「Eagle」ガラスと比較すると、6mmガラスカバーはより広い損傷域を示した。例えば市販の「Gorilla」ガラス(コーニング社)があるがこれには限定されない、化学強化ガラスの使用は、鋼球試験において「Eagle」ガラスより良好な性能を提供し得る。圧縮応力及び層深さが大きくなるほど、耐すり傷性が高くなる。薄ガラスの熱強化も鋼球試験における性能を向上させることができる。
耐弾道衝撃性能を低下させ、視界低下をおこさせ得る、摩耗への耐性はTAに対する別の望ましい要件である。ポリマー及びソーダ石灰ガラスは、例えば吹き付ける砂による、磨耗を受け易い。「Eagle」ガラス及び「Gorilla」ガラスはいずれもソーダ石灰ガラスを凌駕し、「Gorilla」ガラスはこれらの3つのガラスの内で最高の性能を示す。ソーダ石灰ガラスを化学的に強化することはできるが、ソーダ石灰ガラスにおけるイオン交換の深さ及び程度はいずれも「Gorilla」ガラスで可能なイオン交換の深さ及び程度よりもかなり小さく、よって化学的強化ソーダ石灰ガラスの耐磨耗性能は低いであろう。
着氷防止、曇り止め及び曇り取りの効率は、図9に示されるように、導電性透明被覆またはワイアグリッドの加熱素子をカバーガラスの後に配して、カバーガラスを通して熱を(接合されていない)外表面に伝導させると、大きく向上させることができる。接合材料、例えばポリウレタンは、カバーガラスを導電性被覆によって防弾面に接合するため、カバーガラスの導電性被覆側に施すことができる。加熱素子としてワイアメッシュが用いられる場合、接合材料は、カバーガラス、ワイアメッシュ及び防弾面を相互に接合するために用いることもできる。接合材料は、技術上知られているように、液体、ゲル、ペーストまたはフィルムの形態とすることができる。接合フィルムが用いられる場合、接合プロセツ中、接合フィルム内に埋めこまれた薄い加熱ワイアメッシュにより、フィルムが軟化されて、カバーガラスを防弾面に接合するであろう。
太陽加熱は、太陽光スペクトル内のIRを吸収するTA積層間の中間接着剤層によって生じる、TAに対する既知の問題である。接着剤で囲まれた厚ガラスでは熱散逸が非効率的になり、接着剤層を過剰に加熱することになり、続いて、TA性能を弱めることになる。薄ガラスカバーが防弾面層の前に配されると、薄カバーガラスの後の接着剤層がIR光のほとんどを吸収し、生じた熱を、薄ガラス層を介して散逸させることができる。この方策は、砂漠環境で遭遇するような、苛酷な太陽負荷の下でのTA性能を高めるに役立ち得るであろう。防弾面層、裏打ち層及び砕片受止め層を接合する接着剤の加熱及び層間接合の弛みからの保護に加えて、薄カバーガラスを防弾面層に接合するために用いられる接着剤は、例えば車輌に加わるであろう、熱負荷を低減する。これは続いて、例えば救急車または装甲人員運搬車においてなされなければならない、いずれの冷房に対する所要電力も低減するであろう。図11に示されるように、吸収性接着剤260がカバーガラス層230と防弾面層200の間に用いられ、カバーガラス層230を防弾面層200に接合する。図示されるように、防弾面層200の後に、単裏打ちガラス層210,図9の裏打ちガラス層の厚さにほぼ等しい、選ばれた厚さを有し、裏打ちガラス層を置き換える、(単層として示される)1つないし複数の裏打ちアクリル層240及び砕片受止め層220が続く。図11に示される実施形態は図10の実施形態と同様に21ポンド/平方フィート(約105kg/m2)の面積密度を有し、標準の総ガラスTAシステムの28ポンド/平方フィート(約140kg/m2)に対する重量節減はやはり25%である。別の実施形態において、カバーガラス層230はガラスの一方の側に加熱、曇り止め及び曇り取りのための導電素子を有し、接着剤はカバーガラスの導電素子側を防弾面に接合する。また別の実施形態において、加熱、曇り止め及び曇り取りのための素子はワイアメッシュ素子であり、接着剤は、カバーガラス、ワイアメッシュ素子及び防弾面を接合する。

Claims (9)
- 透明装甲積層において、防弾面層、少なくとも1つの砕片受止め層及び、前記防弾面層と前記少なくとも1つの砕片受止め層との間の、少なくとも1つの裏打ち層を有し、それらの層の全てが接着態様で相互に接合されており、
前記防弾面層に接着態様で接合された、0.5mm〜2mmの範囲の厚さを有する、カバーガラス層、をさらに有し
前記防弾面層はガラスおよびガラス−セラミックからなる群より選択されたものであり、
前記裏打ち層はガラスからなり、
前記砕片受止め層はポリマーからなり、
前記カバーガラス層はフュージョンドローガラスからなる、
透明装甲積層。 - 前記カバーガラス層が≦1mmの厚さを有することを特徴とする請求項1記載の透明装甲積層。
- 前記カバーガラス層のガラスが、アルミノケイ酸ガラス、アルカリアルミノケイ酸ガラス、ホウケイ酸ガラス、アルカリアルミノホウケイ酸ガラス及びソーダ石灰ガラスからなる群から選ばれたものであることを特徴とする請求項1または2記載の透明装甲積層。
- 前記カバーガラス層のガラスが、化学強化ガラスであることを特徴とする請求項1から3いずれか1項記載の透明装甲積層。
- 前記カバーガラス層と前記防弾面層の間に加熱素子を有することを特徴とする請求項1から4いずれか1項記載の透明装甲積層。
- 前記加熱素子が前記カバーガラス層の一方の側上の導電層であり、前記導電層側が前記防弾面層に接合されていることを特徴とする請求項5記載の透明装甲積層。
- 前記カバーガラス層の前記導電層側が、IR吸収性接着剤により、前記防弾面層に接着態様で接合されることを特徴とする請求項6記載の透明装甲積層。
- 前記加熱素子が前記カバーガラス層及び前記防弾面層に接着態様で接合されたワイアグリッドであることを特徴とする請求項5記載の透明装甲積層。
- 前記ワイアグリッドがIR吸収性接着剤によって接着態様で接合されていることを特徴とする請求項8記載の透明装甲積層。
