Description
PCDは、かなりの量のダイヤモンド−ダイヤモンド直接接合を含む多量のダイヤモンド粒子を含有する。PCDは、典型的には、コバルト、ニッケル、鉄、又は、それらに類する1種類以上の金属を含有する合金のようなダイヤモンド触媒/溶媒を含む第2の相を有する。PCBNは、一般に、典型的にはcBN(立方晶窒化ホウ素)触媒である接合相、又はそのような触媒を含有する接合相をも有する。適切な接合相の例は、アルミニウム、アルカリ金属、コバルト、ニッケル、タングステン、及び同類のものである。
機械加工が行われる間の切削工具の破損は、通常、次の諸プロセスの1つ又は組合せによって引き起こされる。
・突発破砕(catastrophic fracture)(突発破損)によって
・累積摩耗(cumulative wear)(進行性破壊)によって
・可塑的変形(plastic deformation)(突発破損)によって
1)合成されたディスクの超硬摩耗面及び側面から、金属キャップ(通常、タンタル又はニオブ又はモリブデンのキャップ)を除去する工程。
2)超硬研摩テーブルの外側部を大量に除去して、好ましい特性を得る工程。
3)頂面での中削り。
4)頂面での研摩加工工程(仕上げ削り工程)。典型的には、研摩加工されたPCD層は、90°、3μm針で測定して、Ra=0.01μmの祖面度を有する。PCBNは、一般に、研摩加工されない。
5)ディスクをセグメントに切断する工程。ディスクとセグメントとの両者は、市場に供給される。これらの加工処理工程の中でも、研摩加工工程は、研摩材の超硬特性に起因して、恐らく、最も大きな問題となるだろう。一般に、研摩層の高品質表面仕上げは、使用中、該研摩層の性能を高めるために必要とされる。

US3,745,623号明細書は、チタン又はジルコニウムの保護鞘に入れたPCD(多結晶質ダイヤモンド)の製法であって、製造の間、該保護鞘の一部分が、炭化物に転換される製法を開示する。このチタン鞘又はジルコニウム鞘の薄層は、チップブレーカ(chip breaker)面の上のPCD上に置き去りにされてもよい。
多結晶質ダイヤモンド層の作業面は、好ましくは、そのような層の上面であり、且つ、交差点で切削点又は切削端の範囲を限定する層のもう1つの表面と交差する。より軟質の層は、好ましくは、切削端又は切削点から、作業面の少なくとも一部分を横切って伸びる。
より軟質の層が、100μm以下の厚さを有することは、本発明にとって不可欠である。米国特許第6,779,951号明細書に記述されるようなより厚い層は、金属加工用途及び木材加工用途においてあまり有効でないことが見出だされ。より軟質の層は、好ましくは、少なくとも50μmの厚さを有する。
より軟質の層の頂部の露出面は、研摩され得る。より軟質の層を研摩することは、多結晶質ダイヤモンド層の表面を研摩することに比べて、明らかにかなりより容易である。
より硬質の研摩用層に接合されたより軟質の層は、結果的に、摩耗の初期段階において、切削端の自己丸み付け(self-rounding)効果又は自己砥ぎ上げ(self-honing)効果を生じる。このことによって、次には、切削端の強度が増大し、且つ、損耗段階における破損が減少する。より軟質の層の硬度を増大させるか、又は低下させることによって、丸み付けの程度を制御することができる。該層の材料はまた、多結晶質ダイヤモンド層の端部における孔とピットとを充填し、結果的に、開始部位の損耗がより小さくなる。初期の丸み付けプロセスの後、より軟質の頂部層は、摩耗して、チップブレーカ(chip breaker)の形状になる場合がある。
作業面16に、より軟質の層20が接合されている。このより軟質の層20は、切削端24まで延びている。より軟質の層20は、金属としてのモリブデン、ニオブ及びタンタルから選ばれた金属、炭化物又はそれらの組合せから成る。層20からのこの金属の一部分は、点線で示される、多結晶質ダイヤモンド層の領域22の中に存在する。多結晶質ダイヤモンド層12からの一部分の金属は、より軟質の層20の中に存在する。このように、より軟質の層20と多結晶質ダイヤモンド層12との間には、拡散接合(diffusion bond)が存在する。
次に、本発明の実施例を記述する。
前記反応域から前記カプセルを取り除いた。該多結晶質ダイヤモンドの外面に、モリブデン/炭化モリブデンの層が接合された。このモリブデン/炭化モリブデンの層の外側領域は、該多結晶質ダイヤモンド層の主表面の1つに接合された、多結晶質ダイヤモンドよりも軟質の材料の薄層を研摩し置き去りにすることによって、除去された。
Claims (8)
- 金属を含む第2の相、及び作業面を有する多結晶質ダイヤモンド層と、100μm以下の厚さを有し、且つ、モリブデン、タンタル及びニオブから選ばれた金属を含有するより軟質の層であって、界面に沿って、前記多結晶質ダイヤモンド層の作業面に接合されている該より軟質の層とを有する工具部品において、
前記のより軟質の層からの金属は、前記界面に隣接する多結晶質ダイヤモンド層の領域に存在し、前記のより軟質の層は、主に、炭化物の形態のモリブデン、タンタル又はニオブと、より少ない量の、金属形態のモリブデン、タンタル又はニオブと、前記多結晶質ダイヤモンドの第2の相の金属とから成るものである、上記工具部品。 - 前記のより軟質の層は、前記作業面の一部分のみを覆っている、請求項1に記載の工具部品。
