Description
本発明による導波路交差部を設計する際に有用な図である図2Aには、例示的な導波路交差領域21を含む光導波路装置20が示されている。本質的に交差領域21は、角θで交差する1対の共面(CO−Planar)光導波路22、23を含む。各光導波路22、23は、導波路が交差領域21において共用する複数のセグメント22B、23Bを含むコア部を含む。有利には、各導波路22、23は、交差領域に近づくにつれ幅を断熱的に逓増させ、交差領域から遠ざかるにつれ幅を断熱的に逓減させる。例えば、導波路22は、交差領域21に近づくにつれ幅を広げる連続的な入力コア部22Aと、領域21内の複数のセグメント22Bと、領域21から遠ざかるにつれ幅を狭める連続的なコア部22Cを含む通路を提供する。導波路23も、同じように説明される同様のコア部を有する。好ましくは、各導波路において、セグメントは連続的入力部22A、23Aの軸から横方向にずらして配置される。

Claims (8)
- 光を導波する長手方向に延在するコア領域を含む、基板に実質的に平行に配置された複数の光導波路と、少なくとも第1及び第2の共面導波路が交差する少なくとも1つの交差領域とを含む光デバイスであって、
少なくとも1つの交差領域において、前記第1及び第2の共面導波路の前記コア領域は、前記基板に垂直な軸に沿って見たときに外周を有し、
前記外周は、第1の一連の複数のセグメントとある角度で交差する第2の一連の複数のセグメントとの合体により形成される形状を有し、
前記第1の一連の複数のセグメントは前記第1の共面導波路の離間したセグメントに対応し、前記第2の一連の複数のセグメントは前記第2の共面導波路の離間したセグメントに対応し、
前記第1の一連の複数のセグメントが前記第1の導波路の光軸に沿って整列し、前記第2の一連の複数のセグメントが前記第2の導波路の光軸に沿って整列し、
前記第1及び第2の一連の複数のセグメントの各々が、空間により離間された少なくとも3つのセグメントを含み、そして、
前記第1及び第2の導波路は、4%から10%の範囲の比屈折率差、及び、3°から35°の範囲の交差の角度を有する、光デバイス。 - 前記合体のない前記コア領域は4〜8マイクロメートルの範囲の長手方向の大きさを有する、請求項1に記載のデバイス。
- 前記合体のない前記コア領域が、1.2〜1.4マイクロメートルの範囲の長手方向の大きさを有する間隙によって離間される、請求項1に記載のデバイス。
- 前記第1及び第2の導波路の各々は、前記交差領域から分離した一対の連続部分を含む、請求項1に記載のデバイス。
- 前記連続部分の各々は、前記交差領域に向かって幅に連続的なテーパがつけられた部分を含む、請求項4に記載のデバイス。
- 前記連続的なテーパが断熱的なテーパである、請求項5に記載のデバイス。
- 各導波路について、前記離間されたセグメントが前記連続部分から横方向にずれている、請求項4に記載のデバイス。
- 前記オフセットが0.1乃至1.0マイクロメートルの範囲にある、請求項7に記載のデバイス。
