Description
現在、最も一般的な軍用ヘルメットは、アラミド繊維(通常はフェノール樹脂などの樹脂材料を含む数層のアラミド繊維)から形成されている。アラミド繊維で製造されたヘルメットは、例えば米国特許第4,199,388号、同第4,778,638号、及び同第4,908,877号に開示されている。そのようなヘルメットは通常十分に機能するが、これらはかなり重い。また、該ヘルメットは、ライフル銃弾に対する防御を強化するものではない。比較的重いヘルメットに関する問題の一つは、このようなヘルメットが着用者にとって快適でないという点である。そのため、そのようなヘルメットを使用しなかったり、用途が限られてしまったりする場合がある。
第一の複数の繊維層、前記繊維層は第一の樹脂マトリックスに高靭性研磨繊維を含む;
前記第一の複数の繊維層に貼り付けられた第二の複数の繊維層、前記第二の複数の繊維層は、第二の樹脂マトリックスに高靭性繊維で織られた又は編まれた網状構造を含み、前記高靭性繊維はポリオレフィン繊維を含む;及び
前記第二の複数の繊維層に貼り付けられた第三の複数の繊維層、前記第三の複数の繊維層は第三の樹脂マトリックスに高靭性繊維の不織網状構造を含み、前記高靭性繊維はポリオレフィン繊維を含む;
を含む、前記軽量成型ヘルメットを提供する。
第一の複数の繊維層、前記第一の複数の繊維層は第一の樹脂マトリックスにガラス繊維の織り上げ網状構造を含み、前記第一の樹脂は熱硬化性樹脂を含む;
前記第一の複数の繊維層に貼り付けられた第二の複数の繊維層、前記第二の複数の繊維層は、第二の樹脂マトリックスに高靭性繊維の織り上げ網状構造を含み、前記高靭性繊維はポリエチレン繊維を含み、前記第二の樹脂は熱硬化性樹脂又は熱可塑性樹脂を含む;及び
前記第二の複数の繊維層に貼り付けられた第三の複数の繊維層、前記第三の複数の繊維層は第三の樹脂マトリックスに高靭性繊維の不織網状構造を含み、前記高靭性繊維はポリエチレン繊維を含み、前記第三の樹脂は熱可塑性樹脂を含む;
を含み、前記ヘルメットは約3〜約5ポンド/平方フィート(14.6〜24.4kg/m2)の総面密度を有し、少なくとも約1600ジュールのエネルギーをもつ対ライフル銃弾抵抗性を有する、前記軽量成型ヘルメットを提供する。
第一の複数の繊維層を型に供給する工程、前記繊維層は、第一の樹脂マトリックスに高靭性繊維の網状構造を含み、前記高靭性繊維は研磨性繊維を含み、前記第一の複数の繊維層は前記型の内側に面している;
第二の複数の繊維層を前記型に供給する工程、前記第二の複数の繊維層は、第二の樹脂マトリックスに高靭性繊維の織り上げ網状構造を含み、前記高靭性繊維はポリオレフィン繊維を含み、前記第二の複数の繊維層は前記第一の繊維層の上に重ね合わされ、前記第一及び第二の樹脂は、前記第一及び第二の複数の繊維層が互いに接着性を示すように適合性を有する:
第三の複数の繊維層を前記型に供給する工程、前記第三の複数の繊維層は、第三の樹脂マトリックスに高靭性繊維の不織網状構造を含み、前記高靭性繊維はポリオレフィン繊維を含み、前記第三の複数の繊維層は前記第二の複数の繊維層の上に重ね合わされている:及び
前記第一の複数の繊維層、前記第二の複数の繊維層及び前記第三の複数の繊維層に熱と圧力とを加えて、前記ヘルメットシェルを成形する工程;
を含む、前記方法を提供する。
本発明の防護用ヘルメットは、樹脂マトリックスに高靭性研磨性繊維の網状構造の複数の層を含む第一の外側区分、樹脂マトリックスに高靭性ポリオレフィン繊維の織り上げ又は編み上げ網状構造の複数の層を含む第二の中間区分、及び、樹脂マトリックスに高靭性ポリオレフィン繊維の不織網状構造の複数の層を含む第三の内側区分から形成されたシェルを包含する。
上述のとおり、繊維の中間及び内側群の繊維は、ポリオレフィン繊維、好ましくは高靭性ポリエチレン繊維、及び/又は高靭性ポリプロピレン繊維を含む。最も好ましくは、ポリオレフィン繊維は、伸び切り鎖ポリエチレン繊維又は高配向高分子量ポリエチレン繊維としても公知の高靭性ポリエチレン繊維である。
上述のとおり、繊維層の内側群は、高靭性ポリオレフィン繊維、最も好ましくは高靭性ポリエチレン繊維も含む。これらの繊維層は、一方向に配向した繊維のプライ、又は、ランダム配向にフェルト化されている繊維の不織網状構造を構成している。一方向に配向された繊維を使用する場合、好ましくは繊維の一層が一方向に伸張し、繊維の第二層が前記第一の繊維と90°の方向に伸張したクロスプライ配列で使用する。個々のプライが一方向に配向した繊維である場合、連続するプライは好ましくは0°/90°の角度、0°/90°/0°/90°又は0°/45°/90°/45°/0°又は他の角度で互いに回転されている。繊維の網状構造がフェルトである場合、これらはニードルパンチフェルトであってもよい。フェルトはランダム配向した繊維の不織網状構造であり、好ましくは少なくともその一つは不連続繊維、好ましくは約0.25インチ(0.64cm)〜約10インチ(25.4cm)の範囲の長さをもつステープル繊維である。これらのフェルトは、カーディング若しくは流体積層(fluid laying)、メルトブロー及びスピン積層によるなどの、当業界で公知の幾つかの方法によって形成することができる。繊維の網状構造は、ニードルパンチ、スティッチボンド(stitch bonding)、ハイドロエンタングルメント(hydroentanglement)、エアエンタングルメント(airentanglement)、スパンボンド、スパンレースなどにより機械的に、接着剤を使用するなどして化学的に、又は点接合するため若しくは低融点をもつブレンド化繊維と共に熱的に圧密化される。好ましい圧密化法はニードルパンチ単独、又はその後他の方法のひとつを実施することである。好ましいフェルトはニードルパンチフェルトである。不織構造体を研磨性繊維の第一群で使用する場合、これらはその中で記載されるものと同様の構造を有していてもよい。
ヘルメットシェルの外側、中間及び内側の各区分の繊維層も樹脂マトリックスを含む。繊維プライ用樹脂マトリックスは、広範な種類のエラストマー及び所望の特性を有する他の材料から形成することができる。一態様において、そのようなマトリックスで使用されるエラストマー材料は、ASTM D638で測定すると約6,000psi(41.4MPa)以下の初期引張弾性率(弾性係数)をもつ。より好ましくは、エラストマーは、約2,400psi(16.5MPa)以下の初期引張弾性率を有する。最も好ましくは、エラストマー材料は、約1,200psi(8.23MPa)以下の初期引張弾性率を有する。これらの樹脂材料は通常熱可塑性であるが、熱硬化性材料も有用である。
ヘルメットシェルは、高靭性繊維の三つの異なる区分から形成された。外側層は、織り上げ構造体にガラス繊維から形成した(スタイル7628、Hexcel製、平織り17×12端部/インチ(6.7×4.7端部/cm))。個々の織り上げガラス繊維層は、アセトン溶媒と硬化剤中の樹脂容器に織り上げ布帛を浸漬することによってビニルエステル樹脂(Derakane 411-25樹脂、Ashland Chemical製)でコーティングした。乾燥後、織り上げガラス繊維層は、ビニルエステル樹脂10重量パーセントを有していることが見出された。各層の面密度は200g/m2であった。織り上げガラス繊維層コンポジットの合計2層を緩く積み重ねて、概ねヘルメットの形状に予備成形した。
実施例2
中間層で使用した樹脂が、内側区分の層で使用した同一タイプの熱可塑性ポリウレタン樹脂である点を除いて、実施例1と同様にヘルメットを製造した。中間繊維層の樹脂含有量は20重量パーセントであった。
実施例3
内側層の樹脂がスチレン‐イソプレン‐スチレンブロックコポリマー(Kraton D-1107)である点を除いて、実施例1と同様にヘルメットを製造した。内側繊維層の樹脂含有量は17重量パーセントであった。ヘルメットシェルを実施例1と同様に試験し、同様の結果が得られた。
Claims (3)
- ライフル銃弾による貫通に対して抵抗性を有する軽量成型ヘルメットであって、前記ヘルメットはシェルを含み、前記シェルは、外側から内側に向かって
第一の複数の繊維層、ここで、前記繊維層は第一の樹脂マトリックスに高靭性研磨性繊維を含む;
前記第一の複数の繊維層に貼り付けられた第二の複数の繊維層、ここで、前記第二の複数の繊維層は、第二の樹脂マトリックスに高靭性繊維の織り上げ網状構造又は編み上げ網状構造を含み、前記高靭性繊維はポリオレフィン繊維を含む;及び
前記第二の複数の繊維層に貼り付けられた第三の複数の繊維層、ここで、前記第三の複数の繊維層は、第三の樹脂マトリックスに高靭性繊維の不織網状構造を含み、前記高靭性繊維はポリオレフィン繊維を含む;
を含む、前記軽量成型ヘルメット。 - ライフル銃弾による貫通に対して抵抗性を有する軽量成型ヘルメットであって、前記ヘルメットはシェルを含み、前記シェルは、外側から内側に向かって、
第一の複数の繊維層、ここで、前記第一の複数の繊維層は第一の樹脂マトリックスに高靭性ガラス繊維の織り上げ網状構造を含み、前記第一の樹脂は熱硬化性樹脂を含む;
前記第一の複数の繊維層に貼り付けられた第二の複数の繊維層、ここで、前記第二の複数の繊維層は、第二の樹脂マトリックスに高靭性繊維の織り上げ網状構造を含み、前記高靭性繊維はポリエチレン繊維を含み、前記第二の樹脂は熱硬化性樹脂又は熱可塑性樹脂を含む;及び
前記第二の複数の繊維層に貼り付けられた第三の複数の繊維層、ここで、前記第三の複数の繊維層は第三の樹脂マトリックスに高靭性繊維の不織網状構造を含み、前記高靭性繊維はポリエチレン繊維を含み、前記第三の樹脂は熱可塑性樹脂を含む;
を含み、
前記ヘルメットは約3〜約5ポンド/平方フィート(14.6〜24.4Kg/m2)の総面密度をもち、少なくとも約1600ジュールのエネルギーを有するライフル銃弾に対して抵抗性を有することを特徴とする、前記軽量成型ヘルメット。 - ライフル銃弾の貫通に対して抵抗性を有する軽量ヘルメットのシェルを成形する方法であって、
第一の複数の繊維層を型に供給する工程、ここで、前記繊維層は、第一の樹脂マトリックスに高靭性繊維の網状構造を含み、前記高靭性繊維は研磨性繊維を含み、前記第一の複数の繊維層は前記型の内側に面している;
第二の複数の繊維層を前記型に供給する工程、ここで、前記第二の複数の繊維層は、第二の樹脂マトリックスに高靭性繊維の織り上げ網状構造を含み、前記高靭性繊維はポリオレフィン繊維を含み、前記第二の複数の繊維層は前記第一の繊維層の上に重ね合わされ、前記第一及び第二の樹脂は、前記第一及び第二の複数の繊維層が互いに接着性を示すように適合性を有する:
第三の複数の繊維層を前記型に供給する工程、ここで、前記第三の複数の繊維層は、第三の樹脂マトリックスに高靭性繊維の不織網状構造を含み、前記高靭性繊維はポリオレフィン繊維を含み、前記第三の複数の繊維層は前記第二の複数の繊維層の上に重ね合わされている:及び
