85度以下のプレチルトを誘導する高プレチルト配向;
5度以下のプレチルトを誘導する低プレチルト配向;

セルの厚さ/ピッチ(d/p)比が0.1以下のカイラルドーパント
図8(a)および8(b)は、パターン化された配向を必要としないさらに他のタイプの追加切替セル10を示す。本実施形態では、追加切替セルの両基板が、均一な平面液晶配向を有している。パターン電極52が一方のセル基板上で用いられ、セルの平面における液晶配向を回転させてねじれ液晶構造54を構築するIPS型(App. Phys. Lett, 67. pp. 3895)またはFFS型(SID ’01 Digest pp. 484)の面内切替を実現する。この種の領域は、平面電極53と交互に並べられ、図2に示すような、前述の追加セルのパターン化された配向領域13・14に相当するTNのようなECB液晶構造の交互領域を形成する。この状態で、画像パネル11の交互に並ぶ画素行に対してそろえられた交互に並ぶ液晶構造領域は、画像パネルの交互に並ぶ画素行からの光の偏光を回転させ、装置が前述のようにプライベートモードで動作する。図8(b)に示すパブリックモードでは、追加セルの対向する基板上の平面電極53・56の間を電圧が印加され、液晶は、その動作が図3に前述されたパブリックモードに相当するように、セルにおいて垂直にそろえられる。
Claims (23)
- パブリックビューイングモードと、プライベートビューイングモードとを有するディスプレイであって、
画像変調された光をパブリックビューイング領域全体に向けるように、かつ、上記パブリックビューイングモードでは第一画像を表示し、上記プライベートビューイングモードでは空間的にインターレースされた第二および第三画像を表示するように構成された表示装置と、
第一画像によって変調された光が第一偏光を有するパブリックビューイングモードと、第二および第三画像によって変調された光がそれぞれ第二、第三偏光を付与されるプライベートビューイングモードとの間で切り替えができる制御可能な液晶装置と、
角度依存型偏光チェンジャーと偏光子とを有し、第一偏光の光をほぼパブリックビューイング領域全体に通し、第二偏光の光の通過をほぼパブリックビューイング領域内のプライベートビューイング領域のみに制限し、第三偏光の光の通過をほぼプライベートビューイング領域外かつパブリック領域内の少なくとも一つの非プライベートビューイング領域のみに制限する光学構成とを備えるディスプレイ。 - 上記プライベートビューイング領域は、ディスプレイの軸上かつ周りにある、請求項1に記載のディスプレイ。
- 上記少なくとも一つの非プライベートビューイング領域は、ディスプレイの軸から離れて配置された複数の領域を含む、請求項2に記載のディスプレイ。
- 上記第一偏光は、第二および第三偏光の一方とほぼ同じである、請求項1に記載のディスプレイ。
- パブリックビューイングモードにおける制御可能な液晶装置と光学構成との組み合わせは、第一偏光にほぼ影響を与えない、請求項1に記載のディスプレイ。
- 上記第三偏光は、第二偏光にほぼ直交する、請求項1に記載のディスプレイ。
- 上記第一、第二、および第三偏光はほぼ直線偏光である、請求項1に記載のディスプレイ。
- 上記偏光チェンジャーは、位相差板を有する、請求項1に記載のディスプレイ。
- 上記位相差板は、ネガティブCプレートを有する、請求項8に記載のディスプレイ。
- 上記位相差板は、パブリックビューイングモードにおける制御可能な液晶装置の位相差をほぼ補正する位相差を有する、請求項8に記載のディスプレイ。
- 上記制御可能な液晶装置は、表示装置の第一および第二組の画素と光学的にそろえられた、第二および第三画像をそれぞれ表示するための第一および第二組の領域を有しており、第一および第二組の領域は、プライベートビューイングモードにおいて異なる偏光変化効果を有する、請求項1に記載のディスプレイ。
- 上記第一および第二組のうち一方の領域は、プライベートビューイングモードにおいて当該領域を通る光の偏光を90度変化させるように構成されている、請求項11に記載のディスプレイ。
- 上記一方の組の領域は、プライベートビューイングモードでの動作中にツイストネマチックモードで動作するように構成されている、請求項12に記載のディスプレイ。
- 上記第一および第二組のうち他方の領域は、プライベートビューイングモードにおいて当該領域を通る光の偏光にほぼ影響を与えない、請求項12に記載のディスプレイ。
- 上記他方の組の領域は、プライベートビューイングモードでの動作中に電界制御型複屈折モードで動作するように構成されている、請求項14に記載のディスプレイ。
- 上記制御可能な液晶装置は、パブリックビューイングモードにおいてホメオトロピック配向で動作するように構成されている、請求項13または15に記載のディスプレイ。
- 上記制御可能な液晶装置は、スプレイツイスト型であり、第一、第二組の領域を規定するパターン電極構成を有する、請求項11に記載のディスプレイ。
- 上記表示装置は液晶表示装置である、請求項1に記載のディスプレイ。
- 上記表示装置は透過型である、請求項18に記載のディスプレイ。
- 上記表示装置用にバックライトを備える、請求項19に記載のディスプレイ。
- 上記表示装置は発光ダイオード表示装置である、請求項1に記載のディスプレイ。
- 上記表示装置は有機発光ダイオード表示装置である、請求項21に記載のディスプレイ。
- 上記第三画像は、プライベートビューイングモード中に第二および第三画像から光を受ける視野領域において第二画像を隠すための隠し画像または画像配列を含む、請求項1に記載のディスプレイ。
