Description
同様に、本発明の光学補償素子は、TNモードLCDとOCBモードLCDに適用してもよい。
洗浄処理を施したガラス基板(コーニング社製、品番;1737)上に、透明電極としてITO薄膜を形成し、ITO薄膜上にフレキソ印刷法により、ポリイミド樹脂系配向剤(JSR(株)製、商品名;「オプトマーAL1254」)を適用し、加熱乾燥させた後、ラビング処理を施して配向膜とした。このようにして得られた、透明電極および配向膜を形成したガラス基板を2枚用い、各々の配向膜側が向き合うに配置し、間にスペーサー(直径2μmの球状粒子、積水化学工業(株)製、商品名;「ミクロパール」)を介して周囲を貼り合わせ、内部の空隙に真空注入法により、正の誘電異方性を有する液晶材料を充填した後に封止して、電圧印可により視野角が切り替え可能な光学補償素子を得た。得られた光学補償素子は、電圧を印可しない状態では、Aプレートであり、電圧を印可した状態ではCプレートとなる、電圧により切り替え可能なものである。なお、印加電圧としては、周波数;60Hz、6Vの矩形波を用いた。
スペーサーとして直径4μmのビーズを用い、配向膜としてはラビング処理を施さない垂直配向膜を形成し、液晶材料としては負の誘電異方性を有するものを用いた以外は、上記の光学補償素子の作成と同様にして、VAモードLCDを得た。
上記で得られたVAモードLCD上に、負のCプレートおよび上記で得られた光学補償素子を順に積層し、VAモードLCDの下および光学補償素子の上に、偏光板を1枚ずつ、互いの偏光方向が直交するようにして積層した。
スペーサーとして3.5μmのものを用い、配向膜としてはラビング処理を施した水平配向膜を形成し、液晶材料としては正の誘電異方性を有するものを用いた以外は、実施例1における光学補償素子の作成と同様にして、IPSモードLCDを得た。
上記で得られたIPSモードLCD上に、正のCプレートおよび実施例1で得られたのと同じ光学補償素子を順に積層し、IPSモードLCDの下および光学補償素子の上に、偏光板を1枚ずつ、互いの偏光方向が直交するようにして積層した。

Claims (2)
- 2枚の基材が互いに対向して配置され、前記各々の基材の対向面に電極が積層されており、前記2枚の基材間に、位相差量が電気的に制御可能な可変位相差層が積層されてなり、前記可変位相差層は、正の誘電異方性を有するネマチック液晶分子を含有し、対向する前記電極の間に電圧を印加しない状態ではAプレートであり、電圧を印加した状態ではCプレートとなることを特徴とする光学補償素子。
- 請求項1記載の光学補償素子が液晶表示装置に配置されたことを特徴とする液晶ディスプレイ。
