Description
本願は、米国特許出願第10/613,328号(2003年7月2日出願)に基づく優先権を主張するものであり、該特許出願は、米国仮特許出願第60/45,668号(2003年3月25日出願)に基づく優先権を主張するものであり、それらの開示は、この引用により本明細書に記載されたものとする。
ここで、液晶層の位相差は、異常光と常光の屈折率の差(即ち、液晶層の複屈折率)と液晶層の厚みとの積である。尚、モーガン条件を満たすためには、通常、液晶層の位相差が可視光の波長よりかなり大きいことが必要であり、これは、多くの液晶材料の屈折率及び小さな液晶セルギャップの必要性からすると、めったに満たされない条件である。
Claims (18)
- ある配向方向を有するフロント配向層を備えるフロントパネル、ある配向方向を有するリヤ配向層を備えるリヤパネル、及び、前記フロント配向層とリヤ配向層との間の液晶層を有する液晶ディスプレイであって、
前記フロントパネルはフロント偏光子をさらに含むものであり、かつ、該リヤパネルはリヤ偏光子をさらに含み、前記フロント偏光子の透過軸と前記リヤ偏光子の透過軸とが垂直であり、
前記液晶層は、約90°の回転ツイスト角と2°以下のプレチルト角を有し、かつ該液晶層の配向、材料および厚みは、該回転ツイストの中央部で、液晶ダイレクターの方向が電圧オン時に該液晶ディスプレイのオフノーマルなコントラストが最大の方向に一致すると共に、ノーマルな視認方向から15°〜35°オフセットした方向でコントラストが最大になるようなものであることを特徴とする液晶ディスプレイ。 - フロント偏光子及びリヤ偏光子の少なくとも一つがE型偏光子であり、
前記E型偏光子の透過軸と、該E型偏光子と同じパネルにある前記配向層の配向方向とが垂直であることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶ディスプレイ。 - 前記E型偏光子は複数の芳香族有機化合物から製造された結晶薄膜であり、かつ任意の光学軸の方向における該結晶薄膜の格子面間隔は3.4±0.3Åであることを特徴とする請求項2に記載の液晶ディスプレイ。
- 前記芳香族有機化合物の少なくとも一つは複素環を含むことを特徴とする請求項3に記載の液晶ディスプレイ。
- 該結晶薄膜は、少なくとも一つの二色性色素をベースとするリオトロピック液晶から形成されたものであることを特徴とする請求項3または4に記載の液晶ディスプレイ。
- 該結晶薄膜は、二価および/または三価の金属のイオンで処理されていることを特徴とする請求項3〜5のいずれか1項に記載の液晶ディスプレイ。
- 該フロント偏光子および該リヤ偏光子がO型偏光子であることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶ディスプレイ。
- 該フロントO型偏光子の透過軸は該フロント配向層の配向方向と平行であり、かつ、該リヤO型偏光子の透過軸は該リヤ配向層の配向方向と平行であることを特徴とする請求項7に記載の液晶ディスプレイ。
- 該フロント偏光子の透過軸と該フロント配向層の配向方向とは、0°〜90°の角度を形成することを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶ディスプレイ。
- 該リヤ偏光子の透過軸と該リヤ配向層の配向方向とは、0°〜90°の角度を形成することを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶ディスプレイ。
- 該フロント偏光子および該リヤ偏光子の少なくとも一つは、内部偏光子であることを特徴とする請求項1〜10のいずれか1項に記載の液晶ディスプレイ。
- 該内部偏光子は、配向層、色補正フィルター、位相差板、およびそれらの任意の組合せからなる群より選ばれる機能の少なくとも一つを有することを特徴とする請求項11に記載の液晶ディスプレイ。
- 反射層をさらに含むことを特徴とする請求項1〜12のいずれか1項に記載の液晶ディスプレイ。
- 該反射層は半透明であることを特徴とする請求項13に記載の液晶ディスプレイ。
- バックライトシステムをさらに含むことを特徴とする請求項13または14に記載の液晶ディスプレイ。
- 反射防止層またはアンチグレア層をさらに含むことを特徴とする請求項1〜15のいずれか1項に記載の液晶ディスプレイ。
- 光散乱層をさらに含むことを特徴とする請求項1〜16のいずれか1項に記載の液晶ディスプレイ。
- 位相差層、保護層、接着剤層、カラーフィルター、またはそれらの層の少なくとも二つの機能をあわせ持つ層をさらに含むことを特徴とする請求項1〜17のいずれか1項に記載の液晶ディスプレイ。
