Description
[第1の実施の形態]
なお、図示はしないが、本実施の形態における表示用液晶パネル70(図1)も、一対の偏光子を有している。調光用液晶パネル11の一対の偏光子2A,2Bは、表示用液晶パネル70の一対の偏光子よりも、偏光度を意図的に悪化させている。本実施の形態において、「通常の表示用の液晶パネル」とは、表示用液晶パネル70に相当する。
この表示装置は、光源部61の光源1を駆動する光源駆動部30と、光源部61の調光用液晶パネル11を駆動する調光用パネル駆動部31と、入力映像信号Vinに対する信号処理および各部の制御を行う制御部40とを備えている。
本実施の形態において、プロファイルデータ記憶部45は、本発明における「記憶手段」の一具体例に対応する。画像処理部50は、本発明における「補正手段」の一具体例に対応する。

[第2の実施の形態]
[その他の実施の形態]
例えば、上記第1の実施の形態では、調光用液晶パネル11の一対の偏光子2A,2Bの厚みを最適化することで偏光度の最適化を行う場合について説明したが、偏光度の最適化の手法はこれに限らない。例えば、厚みはそのままで偏光子本体層としてのPVA5(図6)に含侵させるヨウ素の含侵量を加減するような最適化を行っても良い。
Claims (9)
- 一対の偏光子を有する表示用液晶パネルを備えた表示装置のバックライトとして使用される照明装置であって、
光源と、
一対の偏光子を有し、前記光源から発せられた光の通過光量を制限することにより前記光源から発せられた光の同一面内での輝度を局部的に低下させる調光用液晶パネルと
を備え、
前記調光用液晶パネルは、その一対の偏光子の偏光度を最適化することにより、その一対の偏光子の透過光量比が、前記表示用液晶パネルにおける一対の偏光子の透過光量比よりも低くなるように構成されている照明装置。 - 前記調光用液晶パネルは、その一対の偏光子の偏光度を99.90(%)以下となるように最適化することにより、前記透過光量比が、前記表示用液晶パネルにおける一対の偏光子の透過光量比よりも低くなるように構成されている請求項1に記載の照明装置。
- 前記調光用液晶パネルは、その一対の偏光子の厚みを最適化することにより前記透過光量比が、前記表示用液晶パネルにおける一対の偏光子の透過光量比よりも低くなるように構成されている請求項1に記載の照明装置。
- 前記調光用液晶パネルにおける一対の偏光子は、ヨウ素を含侵させた偏光子本体層を有し、その一対の偏光子におけるヨウ素の含侵量を最適化することにより前記透過光量比が、前記表示用液晶パネルにおける一対の偏光子の透過光量比よりも低くなるように構成されている請求項1に記載の照明装置。
- 前記調光用液晶パネルは、2次元マトリクス状に複数に分割された各分割領域ごとに前記通過光量の制限を行うようになされ、前記光源から発せられた光の同一面内での輝度を前記分割領域ごとに局部的に低下させるようになされている請求項1に記載の照明装置。
- 照明装置と、前記照明装置からの照明光を表示用の光として用いて、入力映像信号に基づく映像を表示する表示部とを備えた表示装置であって、
前記表示部は、一対の偏光子を有する表示用液晶パネルを用いた構成とされ、
前記照明装置は、
光源と、
一対の偏光子を有し、前記入力映像信号に応じて、前記光源から発せられた光の通過光量を制限することにより前記光源から発せられた光の同一面内での輝度を局部的に低下させる調光用液晶パネルと
を備え、
前記調光用液晶パネルは、その一対の偏光子の偏光度を最適化することにより、その一対の偏光子の透過光量比が、前記表示用液晶パネルにおける一対の偏光子の透過光量比よりも低くなるように構成されている表示装置。 - 前記調光用液晶パネルは、2次元マトリクス状に複数に分割された各分割領域ごとに前記通過光量の制限を行うようになされ、前記入力映像信号に応じて、前記光源から発せられた光の同一面内での輝度を前記分割領域ごとに局部的に低下させるようになされている請求項6に記載の表示装置。
- 前記調光用液晶パネルにおいて前記複数の分割領域のうち一部の分割領域の通過光量を制限したときの輝度分布の変化を示す輝度分布データを記憶する記憶手段と、
前記記憶手段に記憶された前記輝度分布データに基づいて前記入力映像信号に対して輝度の補正を行い、前記表示部に表示させる映像を生成する補正手段と
をさらに備えた請求項7に記載の表示装置。 - 前記表示部における映像表示のためのフレーム書き換え駆動周波数と、前記調光用液晶パネルの駆動周波数とが完全に同期しているか、またはそれら2つの駆動周波数が互いに異なる状態で、かつ互いに視覚的なビートを生じないような周波数に設定されている請求項6に記載の表示装置。
