Description
一対の基板間にベンド配列が可能な液晶分子を有する液晶層を狭持して構成された液晶パネルと、
前記液晶層に電圧を印加した所定の表示状態において、前記液晶層のリタデーションを光学的に補償する光学補償素子と、
を備え、前記液晶層に印加する電圧によって前記液晶層に含まれる液晶分子による複屈折量を変化させて画像を表示する液晶表示装置であって、
前記光学補償素子は、正面方向にリタデーションを有する少なくとも第1位相差板及び第2位相差板を有し、
各波長の光に対するリタデーション量Δn・d(但し、neを異常光線屈折率及びnoを常光線屈折率としたとき、Δn=ne−noであり、dは厚みとする)を所定波長の光に対するリタデーション量Δnλ・dで規格化した値をΔn/Δnλとしたき、
所定波長より短波長の光に対して、前記第1位相差板における規格化した値Δn/Δnλは前記液晶層における規格化した値Δn/Δnλよりも大きく、前記第2位相差板における規格化した値Δn/Δnλは、前記液晶層における規格化した値Δn/Δnλよりも小さいことを特徴とする液晶表示装置が提供される。
図7に示すように、第1実施形態に係るOCB型液晶表示装置は、液晶パネル1のアレイ基板10側外面及び対向基板20側外面にそれぞれ光学補償素子40A及び40Bを備えている。
図9に示すように、第2実施形態に係るOCB型液晶表示装置は、第1実施形態と同様に、液晶パネル1のアレイ基板10側外面及び対向基板20側外面にそれぞれ光学補償素子40A及び40Bを備えている。なお、第1実施形態と同一の構成要素については同一の参照符号を付して詳細な説明を省略する。
図10に示すように、第3実施形態に係るOCB型液晶表示装置は、第1実施形態と同様に、液晶パネル1のアレイ基板10側外面及び対向基板20側外面にそれぞれ光学補償素子40A及び40Bを備えている。なお、第1実施形態と同一の構成要素については同一の参照符号を付して詳細な説明を省略する。
上述した実施の形態では、色づきの課題に対して正面方向にリタデーションを有する複数の位相差板を組み合わせることで対処してきたが、各色画素においてそれぞれ黒を表示する電圧が異なる色画素間で互いに異なる電圧調整機構を有しても良い。

Claims (6)
- 一対の基板間にベンド配列が可能な液晶分子を有する液晶層を狭持して構成された液晶パネルと、
前記液晶層に電圧を印加した所定の表示状態において、前記液晶層のリタデーションを光学的に補償する光学補償素子と、
を備え、前記液晶層に印加する電圧によって前記液晶層に含まれる液晶分子による複屈折量を変化させて画像を表示する液晶表示装置であって、
前記光学補償素子は、正面方向にリタデーションを有する少なくとも第1位相差板及び第2位相差板を有し、
各波長の光に対するリタデーション量Δn・d(但し、neを異常光線屈折率及びnoを常光線屈折率としたとき、Δn=ne−noであり、dは厚みとする)を所定波長の光に対するリタデーション量Δnλ・dで規格化した値をΔn/Δnλとしたき、
所定波長より短波長の光に対して、前記第1位相差板における規格化した値Δn/Δnλは前記液晶層における規格化した値Δn/Δnλよりも大きく、前記第2位相差板における規格化した値Δn/Δnλは、前記液晶層における規格化した値Δn/Δnλよりも小さいことを特徴とする液晶表示装置。 - 前記液晶分子は、表示状態において、一対の基板間においてベンド配列したことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記光学補償素子は、前記第1位相差板または前記第2位相差板を最も前記液晶パネル側に備えたことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記第1位相差板は、一対の基板のうち少なくとも一方の基板側に配置されたことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記第2位相差板は、一対の基板のうち少なくとも一方の基板側に配置されたことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記液晶パネルは、複数色の色画素を有し、前記色画素においてそれぞれ黒を表示する電圧が異なる色画素間で互いに異なる電圧調整機構を有することを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
