これは、選択時間をその分長くできることを意味し、同じ選択期間にするのであればより多くの駆動データを表示できることになる。そのため、より多階調表示が実現できて好ましい。

まず、第1の実施形態にいて説明する。図2は、本実施形態の有機ELディスプレイ装置1の全体回路構成のブロックを示す。
I=k×μ×(Vgs−Vth)2
と表される(|Vgs−Vth|<|Vgs|,但しVthは閾値電位である。トランジスタQ1はp型であるから、Vthは負の値となる。)。従って、トランジスタQ1を流れる電流Idsは、

となる。
続いて、第2の実施形態について説明する。図6は、本実施形態の有機ELディスプレイ装置11の全体回路構成のブロックを示す。

と表される。即ち、トランジスタQ11のゲート・ソース間電位Vgsは上記の電流I0に対応した値となる。なお、Vthは、トランジスタQ11の閾値電圧であり、負の値である。

Claims (9)
- 電流駆動型の表示素子を含む複数の画素をマトリックス状に配置し、該画素を選択する選択信号を供給する選択線と、選択された画素にデータを供給するデータ線とを備え、各画素が、所望する電流を制御する第1のトランジスタと、前記第1のトランジスタおよび前記表示素子と直列に接続され、前記表示素子への電流の供給または供給停止をする第2のトランジスタと、前記第1のトランジスタの制御端子と前記第1および第2のトランジスタの接続点との間を接続または遮断する第3のトランジスタと、前記第1のトランジスタの制御端子の設定後の電位を保持する保持コンデンサとを有し、前記第1のトランジスタの出力電流を設定するとともに、前記第2のトランジスタをONまたはOFFすることにより1フレーム期間を複数のサブフレーム期間に分けて階調表示する時間分割階調駆動を行う表示装置であって、
時間分割階調駆動のための駆動データを強制的に非発光状態とするための非発光データとして、前記第2のトランジスタに当該非発光データを1フレームに1回だけ与えることによって前記第2のトランジスタをOFFさせている期間に、前記第3のトランジスタをON状態として前記第1のトランジスタの制御端子の電位を設定した後、前記第3のトランジスタをOFF状態とすることにより、前記第1のトランジスタの出力電流値を設定する電流値設定手段を備えていることを特徴とする表示装置。 - 各画素は、前記第2のトランジスタの制御端子と前記データ線との間に接続され、その制御端子が前記選択線に接続されるデータ供給トランジスタを備えていることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の表示装置。
- 前記保持コンデンサは、前記第1のトランジスタの制御端子と電位配線との間に設けられ、
前記電流値設定手段は、前記第1のトランジスタの制御端子の電位設定時に前記電位配線に所定の電位を与え、前記第1のトランジスタの制御端子の電位設定後に前記電位配線に与える電位を変化させることを特徴とする請求項1または2に記載の表示装置。 - 各画素は、電流供給線と前記第1および第2のトランジスタの接続点との間を接続または遮断する第4のトランジスタをさらに有し、
前記電流値設定手段は、前記第3および第4のトランジスタをON状態として、前記第1のトランジスタから前記電流供給線へ所定値の電流を流すことにより、前記第1のトランジスタの制御端子にその電流値に対応する電位を設定した後、前記第3および第4のトランジスタをOFF状態とすることを特徴とする請求項1または2に記載の表示装置。 - 各画素は、電流供給線と前記第1および第2のトランジスタの接続点との間を接続または遮断する第4のトランジスタと、前記第1のトランジスタの制御端子と前記電流供給線との間に直列に設けられるコンデンサおよび第5のトランジスタとを有し、
前記電流値設定手段は、前記第3および第5のトランジスタをON状態として、電流供給線に所定の電位を与え、第1のトランジスタの閾値電位を設定した後、前記第3のトランジスタをOFF状態として、前記第4のトランジスタをON状態として、前記第1のトランジスタから前記電流供給線を通して所定値の電流を流すように前記所定の電位を変化させ、前記第1のトランジスタの制御端子にその電流値に対する電位を設定した後、前記第4および第5のトランジスタをOFF状態とすることを特徴とする請求項1または2に記載の表示装置。 - 前記データ線と前記電流供給線とが共通していることを特徴とする請求項4または5に記載の表示装置。
- 前記電流値設定手段は、第3のトランジスタをON状態としたときに、前記第1および第2のトランジスタの接続点に低電位を与えることを特徴とする請求項2に記載の表示装置。
- 電流駆動型の表示素子を含む複数の画素をマトリックス状に配置し、該画素を選択する選択信号を供給する選択線と、選択された画素にデータを供給するデータ線とを備え、各画素が、所望する電流を制御する第1のトランジスタと、前記第1のトランジスタおよび前記表示素子と直列に接続され、前記表示素子への電流の供給または供給停止をする第2のトランジスタとを有し、前記第1のトランジスタの出力電流を設定するとともに、前記第2のトランジスタをONまたはOFFすることにより1フレーム期間を複数のサブフレーム期間に分けて階調表示する時間分割階調駆動を行う表示装置であって、
前記第2のトランジスタに直列に接続される第3のトランジスタと、
1フレームに1回だけ該第3のトランジスタをOFFさせている期間に、前記第1のトランジスタの出力電流値を設定する電流値設定手段とを備えていることを特徴とする表示装置。 - 各データ線に供給する連続するn個(nは2以上の整数)のデータに、前記時間分割階調駆動のためのn個の駆動データD0〜Dn−1が各1回含まれていることを特徴する請求項1ないし8のいずれか1項に記載の表示装置。
