Description
本発明は、シリカ母材の溶融端からファイバを引出し、保護被覆材で当該ファイバをコーティングする手段に沿って当該ファイバを移動する工程を有する、不純物を持つ核部分と周囲の光学クラッド部分とを有する偏光モード分散を低減した光ファイバを製造する方法に関する。
背景技術
用語“偏光モード分散”(PMD:Polarisation mode dispersion)は、ファイバの核部分の複屈折による光ファイバ(特に単一モードファイバ)により伝送される信号の分散に関する。この複屈折は、核の断面が僅かに円形ではない、不整な縦方向応力等によるファイバの欠陥により生じ、そして、搬送信号の2つの直交偏光モード用の非対象屈折指数において明らかである。偏光モード分散を持たない完全なファイバの場合、これら2つのモードは、基本的な速度で相互に独立して伝搬する。しかし、偏光モード分散の存在において、2つのモードの対応する移送が継続的に変化し、ファイバに沿ってある特定の間隔の特定形態に戻る。この様な間隔の平均は、ファイバの共振長Lpとして参照され、1mという基準値を有する。
前段に示したような方法は、米国特許第5298047号から既知で、この特許では、ファイバコーティング工程に次いで、連続する複数のプーリ上を通過してファイバが移動する。継続的なコーティングにより、これらプーリの少なくとも一つの回転軸が予期せぬ原因(例えば、可変周波数)で前後することにより、ファイバが、傾斜プーリと母材との間のファイバの全長に渡って前後に2度生じる振動トルクに曝される。この様な2つの熱要素が、被膜の無いファイバの組成材料について振動軸回転の特徴付けを成し、この回転は次いでファイバが冷えるに従ってファイバ内で“凍結”する。ファイバにおける振動スピンに関する応力を考慮した結果、搬送信号の直交偏光モード間の連続的なモード結合をもたらし、このモード結合により、2つのモード間の明確な移送遅れの蓄積を阻止し、その結果として、ファイバにおけるPMDの明確な低減をもたらす。
発明の開示
本発明は、PMDを低減した光ファイバを製造できる新たな方法を提供することを目的とする。特に本発明は、PMDを低減する特別な手段が、ファイバとの機械的な接触を必要としないことを目的とする。更に本発明は、更なる他の方法で、ファイバの引き出し構造について比較的安価かつ、簡単に改善すること目的とする。特に、本発明は、明確に低減されたPMDが、ファイバにおける可変スピンに対応する機械的応力の存在以外の機構により実現される光ファイバを提供することを目的とする。
これら及び他の目的は、シリカ母材の溶融端からファイバを引出し、保護被覆材で当該ファイバをコーティングする手段に沿って当該ファイバを移動する工程を有する、不純物を持つ核部分と周囲の光学クラッド部分とを有する光学ファイバを製造する方法において、コーティング工程に先立ち、移動されるファイバが不規則に変調される化学放射に曝され、これにより長手方向位置の関数として核部分の屈折率に関する不規則変化がもたらされることを特徴とする。
言葉“シリカ”は、アモルファス(Amorphous)もしくはクリスタリン(Crystalline)の合成材料もしくは天然材料であるSiO2(二酸化窒素)の種々の形態として参照する。当業者は、シリカは特に、屈折率を変更する目的で(例えばF(鉄)、Ge(ゲルマニウム))、或る不純物の比較的小さな値を有するものと理解するであろう。言葉“化学放射”は、緑もしくは青色光の比較的短い波長の可視電磁放射として知られた紫外線、X線、電子ビーム等の放射の形態として理解されるであろう。この様な放射は、ここでは、入射する場合は“変調”されるものとして参照され、核粒子毎の波長もしくはエネルギが、ソースにおいて直接的に若しくはシャッタの様なもので一時的な調整された影若しくは偏光手段の助けを持ってして部分的に無効化される。この様な変調は、直前の局所的な最大値の一時的な分離が一定でない場合は、“例外的”なものと見なし、対応ファイバ核の全長に渡る屈折率が一定の間隔では生じない。
本発明が、母材から引出す光ファイバの全長(例えば100km)に沿って若しくは、非放射工程ファイバの断続可能な実質的な長さの複数の独立部分に少なくとも沿った長さ(10〜100m)に渡って望ましくは生じる変調化学放射について開示するものと理解されたい。
本発明は、適切なエネルギの化学放射に曝す場合、ファイバの核部分の不純物の電気的構造を、関連した放射部分における不純物を含む核材料の屈折率を部分的に増加させる目的で変更できるという観点から導き出す。この様な部分的な屈折率の変化が、ファイバ核の長さに沿った不規則に断続する形で配置され(本発明による)、これらは、PMDに対応する明確な低減を持つ核中の信号表示の異なる偏光モード間の継続的なモード結合を引き起こす。本発明の放射が核部分の屈折率ncoにおいて部分的な上昇をもたらすため、そしてncoが外周光学クラッド部分の屈折率nClよりも既に大きいため、ファイバ核の全反射の実現のために重要な状態nco>nClが維持される。
特別な例として、シリカ核から供給されたGeO2不純物の場合、化学放射(紫外線のような)の基底状態Ge分子の放射は、活性化された状態の安定的なGe(1)及びGe(2)の部分的な構造を導くことができ、これにより、化学放射の特別な形式に依存する分子比Ge:Ge(1):Ge(2)の得られた値が引き出される。結果として、Ge不純物核部分の屈折率が上昇する。この工程は、SPIE Conference Proceedings Vol. 1373(1990)の「Fiber Lase Sources and Amplifiers II」の頁126〜139に、より詳細に開示されている。
化学放射で変形として使用できる電気構造の他の核不純物は、例えば、P(リン)及びAl(アルミニウム)である。
特に有利なのは、本発明の放射を活性化するための手段は、ファイバに対する機械的な接触が不要で、非常に小さい形(例えば、レーザビーム、アークランプ若しくは熱電子銃)で実現できる。
上述のコーティング手段は、光ファイバ製造の技術への適用に適したあらゆる形式で良い。例えば、この様な手段は、移動ファイバが案内されて貫通し、非活性ハロゲンガスが充填されたチャンバを有し、このチャンバには更に、ファイバを加熱する目的で、加熱手段(例えば誘導若しくはマイクロは加熱手段)が設けられ、これによりファイバ表面上の固体ハロゲン層(ガス工程の外)の大勢比率の上昇をもたらす。本発明の放射工程は、提供された化学放射が影響する一方で、ファイバの保護被覆の吸収が作用する。
ファイバが本発明の放射工程の間に柔らかい若しくは暖かいかは重要ではないことを規定せねばならない。一方、ファイバを、その引抜き後の加熱が短時間であるように保つ場合、不純物の発生を非活性化の実現性が十分高い状態であっても(例えば、紫外線放射したゲルマニウム不純物の場合にはおよそ700℃を越える)、本発明による方法を抑制することはない。
特に効果的なPMD低減は、dm<Lpの場合(ここでdmは、増加したncoの隣接する局所的領域の平均的な長手方向の分離量である。)に、本発明により得られる。望ましくは、dmがLpの数分の1で、例えば、Lpがおよそ2mならば、dmは望ましくは(必須ではない)、およそ1mの最大値を持ち、更に望ましくは、およそ0.3〜0.4m(共鳴長ごとに5つの変調)の値である。得られた値dmは、移動ファイバの線速度Vfおよび化学放射の平均変調時間tlにもちろん依存するであろう。例えば、Vf=10m/sならば、t1はdm=0.5mを得るためには、0.05sの値でなければならない。言葉“平均”は、ここでは、光ファイバの実質的な長さに対して与えられる数学的な平均(例えば100m)若しくは実質的な時間間隔(例えば10s)として参照することに注意されたい。
同様に化学放射の異なる形式は、基本的に、本発明の方法の実現に適し、電磁放射の使用に特に適応しても良く、これにより安価で小型のソースから高い入射を簡単に提供でき、そして、例えばシャッタ若しくはパルス電源を使用して簡単に変調できる。特に、本発明は、ランダムなパルス強度のレーザソースから紫外線もしくは青/緑光の助けで、Ge不純物シリカファイバ中の明確なPMD低減を良好に実現した。紫外線光は、ここでは230〜260nmの波長を持つものと理解されたい。そして、望ましくは、およそ240nmの値で、そして青/緑光は、460〜520nmの波長を持ち、望ましくはおよそ488もしくは514nmの値である。
化学放射のランダムなパルス発生については、本発明による所望の不規則な変調を実現する複数の他の可能性が存在する。例えば、変調は以下の形式の何れかであっても良い。
(1)一定振幅のブロック、三角もしくな正弦波、これらの周波数は不規則な方法で変調される。
(2)非対象の一時的ピッチの二重もしくは三重の繰り返しパルス。
(3)比率P1/P2の値が整数でないように、対応するP1及びP2を有する少なくとも2つの周期的なブロックの重複発生。
例示のリストは、完全なものを意味せず、特に説明目的で示したものである。
使用した化学放射の選択入射は、とりわけ、核不純物の電気的構造が変形される放射機構の統計的な性質の観点から、t1の値及び光ファイバの核部分の不純物の集中度に依存するであろう。当業者は、与えられた製造状況における特定のパラメータへの提供された放射入力の適応を実現するであろう。紫外線もしくは青/緑レーザ光の場合、発明者は、0.1〜1Wのパワーのレーザで良好な結果を得た。
発明を実施するための最良の形態
実施例1
第1図は本発明による光ファイバを製造する手順を示す図である。
シリカ母材1は、例えば、シリカ基板チューブ(例えばプラズマ化学雰囲気堆積)の内面の合成シリカの堆積層の堆積により製造される。この堆積手順の間に異なる不純物(F(フッ素)Ge(ゲルマニウム))を使用することにより、母材ロッドが、外周のシリカよりも高い屈折率を持つ核シリカが実現する。例えば、ロッドは、核層(図中ファイバが引き出される核部分に対応する)がおよそ1at%のFと5mol%のGeO2の不純物を含むにも関わらず、外周層は、1at%のFと1mol%のGeO2の不純物を含む。もし望むならば、母材ロッドは、シリカ外装チューブに連続的に覆われる。他の場合、最終工程が母材1を構築する。
この様な母材1の製造は、もちろん、種々の既知の方法を使用して実現できる。特定の方法の使用は、本発明による光ファイバ製造工程の連続的な実施に対して特に重要では無く、以後更に明らかにする。
母材ロッド1は、加熱手段5を使用して端部3が加熱される。この加熱された端部3から、線速度Vfでファイバ7が引き出される。このファイバは、光学クラッド部分に覆われた中心核部分を有する。このファイバ7は、保護層(例えば不透明な樹脂コーティング)が設けられるコーティング手段9を介して移動される。端部4とコーティング手段9との間では、移動ファイバ7が、放射変調化学放射15により部分的に照射される。ここに示したように、放射ビーム15は、シャッタ13の背後に配置された特別な固定ソース11から供給される。特定の例において、ビーム15は、青/緑光、即ち一定の強度0.2WのAr(アルゴン)レーザビーム9と、不規則な方法(例えば乱数発生器として動作するマイクロプロセッサにより規定されるデューティー比で動作するサーボ装置で制御される)で不意に開閉するシャッタ13とを有する。この場合、移動ファイバ7は青/緑光のランダムパルス(ブロック)に依存する。
ビーム15がファイバ7を捕らえる位置17で、ファイバ7の核部分の屈折率ncoが上昇する。係数ncoの上昇は、もちろん、化学放射15(例えば、パルスもしくはブロック)のあらゆるものに曝されるファイバ7の全体の軌道に沿って生じるであろう。例えば、Vf=10で、シャッタが0.005s間隔で開く場合、ファイバ7の長さ、即ち化学放射にされされる長さは、10×0.005m=0.005m=50mmで、この結果ncoは、長さ50mmに渡って上昇する。
5mol%の濃度のGeO2不純物、ビーム15が0.2Wの強度であると仮定すると、屈折率ncoは、0.01%に迫る放射により上昇するであろう。
実施例2
図2は、本発明の異なる可能性の変形例で製造された3本の光ファイバ37,47,57の一部を示す図である。これらファイバは、それぞれ光学クラッド部分373,473,573で覆われた核部分371,471,571を有する。ファイバの保護被覆は、明確化のために図示されていない。特定の例として、核部分371,471,571は、Ge不純物シリカを有し、そして光学クラッド部分373,473,573がF不純物シリカを有する。
各核部分371,471,571の屈折率ncoは、対応する光学クラッド部分371,473,573の屈折率nClを越える。しかしながら、ncoは、異なるファイバ37,47,57に沿った長手方向の関数としての一定の値を持たない。代わりに、ファイバ核部分371,471,571の各々は、ncoが局部的に最大値を示す不均一間隔領域375,475,575を有する(図中ハッチング部分)と、ncoが局部的に低い値を持つ不均一間隔領域377,477,577(図中ハッチング無し)。不均一間隔領域375,475,575は、望ましくは、対応するファイバ37,47,57の全長(100kmの単位)に渡って配置され、若しくは、これらファイバのいくつかの非常に限られた長さ(10〜100m)に渡って配置される。
ファイバ37において、領域375は、全て同一長hを持つが、例えば領域377が一定の長さではない長手方向に可変間隔で配置される。領域375,377のパターンは、本発明の方法の実施例を実現できる。この方法により、化学放射が、ランダムな一時的な間隔で一定の一時的な配置のブロックを有するブロック機能により変調される。
ファイバ47において、領域475も領域477も一定の長さである。しかしながら、領域475,477は、3つの連続する領域475の各セットの後でそれぞれ繰返すことにより、或る間隔を示す。この様な間隔は、本発明の方法の実施例で実現できる。この方法により、一定の強度の化学放射が、3つの異なるアジマス開口を持つ連続的に回転するディスクを有する覆いを介して移動するファイバ上に向けられる。
ファイバ57において、領域575,577のパターンに規則性はない。この様なパターンは、本発明の方法の実施例により実現できる。この方法により、化学放射が、ランダムパルスソースから供給される。
ここに示したように、全てのハッチング領域が急激な境界により明確に区別される。特に、しかしながら、ncoにおいては緩やかな変化であっても良く、この結果得られるパターンが外観上継続しない(例えば、周波数変調正弦波放射)。

Claims (5)
- シリカ母材の溶融端からファイバを引出し、保護被覆材で当該ファイバをコーティングする手段に沿って当該ファイバを移動する工程を有する、不純物を持つ核部分と周囲の光学クラッド部分とを有する光ファイバを製造する方法において、
前記コーティング工程に先立ち、前記移動されるファイバが不規則に変調される化学放射に曝され、前記ファイバの全長にわたって、長手方向位置の関数として前記核部分の屈折率に関する不規則変化がもたらされることにより偏光モード分散を低減したことを特徴とする光ファイバを製造する方法。 - 前記引出されるファイバの核部分が不純物としてGe(ゲルマニウム)を有するように前記母材が選択されることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の光ファイバを製造する方法。
