もしそれがArrow Up/Downキー(Arrow Up or Down key)であれば、プログラムはサブルーチンAに進む。
Background of the Invention Field of the Invention The present invention relates to an interactive two-way remote control (hereinafter referred to as “remote control”) having a circuit for displaying an advertisement on its display unit and maintaining the advertisement in a display state when not in use. )
2. Description of Related Techniques Including Information Disclosure Based on US Patent Law Handheld remote controls usually operate on batteries and send control commands from the handset to the controlled device only in one direction with radio waves (IR radio waves or RF radio waves) Is. Even if the handset has a display unit, the display unit is used only to assist the user interface of the remote control. For example, it is used only for the purpose of assisting the operating state of the remote controller and the initial setting of the remote controller.
To date, a wide variety of systems for remotely displaying information has been proposed. For example, the price displayed on a supermarket product shelf and the display on the screen of a television correspond to these. In addition, remote control devices such as a key back-lighting device, a credit card and smart card reader device, a built-in modem, or an adapter for communicating with the modem have been proposed. Some such remote control devices and remote display systems are disclosed in the following US patents and others.

WO 95/01059 Summary of the Invention of Apple Computer Ink The present invention relates to a remote control provided with a display unit capable of receiving information wirelessly via IR radio waves or RF radio waves. Receiving information to update the remote control code is taught in US Pat. No. 4,959,810 to Derby et al. The present invention receives information for advertising on a remote control. The advantage is that, unlike the television, the display part of the remote control can always be in an activated state. With this feature, the remote control can be used as an advertisement / bulletin board installed on a table in a coffee shop, for example, and can be used for events, products, services, promotion of coupons and other advertisements.
Such an advertisement on the remote controller can be provided to the advertiser for a fee. As an example, an advertiser could be charged according to the advertising time on the remote control screen. Therefore, it is important that the display usage time is as long as possible. In the present invention, for example, a timer is built in the remote controller, and a pay message can be displayed after a predetermined time after the user uses the remote controller for the original control of the remote controller.
In one embodiment of the present invention, a built-in motion detector can be used to detect that the user has picked up the remote control, and a pop-up display of a pay message can indicate the operating status of the remote control. The advertisement message is effectively utilized to the maximum extent by the time and space sharing mechanism of the remote control screen.
When this remote control is used in a TV set top box, TV itself, or computer-operated interaction state, it is important not to allow interactive advertisements that appear during program breaks to enter the program area. is there. In this case, the remote control display was of interest to the user by “trailing” the advertisement on the remote control screen after the interactive advertisement disappeared from the TV (PC) screen and the regular program resumed. The user usage time can be extended so that the advertisement can be handled.
Many systems that the remote control can control are bidirectional. That is, information from the user is read by the “head end” or sent to the head end. Such a system enables a user to perform a transaction operation. For example, a specific advertisement can be reacted by simply pressing a button on a remote controller. In such interactive media, the advertisement can appear on the remote control itself that generates the user response, and in this case, it does not mediate the TV or PC as the display device.
If the carrier medium for advertising to the remote control is not bidirectional, a “bypass” system can be provided for a return signal to the central computer. For example, a low-cost radio transmitter in a remote control can send data to an automatic dialing device modem connected to a user telephone line. The user response to the advertisement can then be sent to the central computer by telephone.
A cable, satellite or broadcast TV is a normal means of sending information to the remote control using the set top box or the receiver circuit of the TV itself along with an IR or RF radio link with the remote control. However, a paging network, FM SCA data for radio stations, a modem with a radio link to the remote control, or a cable to the remote control using a radio link to a computer connected to the remote control network, It is also possible to bypass satellite or broadcast TV downstream links.
Regardless of whether the TV or PC is active or inactive, it is important that the remote control display is always readable and readable so that the user has maximum access to the advertisement. .
To address the narrow bandwidth normally available on the wireless link between the transmitting device and the remote control, the image can be compressed before being sent to the remote control. Bitmapped images can be compressed with one of several known compression algorithms, such as JPEG, or image commands can be sent to a graphics device interface (GDI) used on the remote control.
By allowing the remote to receive executable code and still images, the remote can display animated graphics, activate interactive sessions with the user, or upgrade its software to improve usage Can do.
