図面を参照すると、図1は情報搬送パルスの供給源11、供給源11から入る光信号を伝送するための光ファイバを有する伝送経路12、多次数PMD補償器13、場合によって設けられる光受信器14、および場合によって設けられる、多次数PMD補償器13にフィードバック信号16を供給するためのモニタ15を含む光ファイバ伝送システム10を概略的に例示している。ファイバ経路12は不本意な偏波モード分散を受けると推測される。信号源11、ファイバ経路12、受信器14、およびモニタ15は当該技術でよく知られている従来式の装置であることが可能である。
偏波モード分散は光ファイバの複屈折によって引き起こされる伝送の障害である。ファイバ製造工程のわずかな不完全性および/またはケーブル内のファイバへの応力がファイバの長さに沿って複屈折軸のランダムな変化を引き起こす。第1の次数(すなわち信号帯域幅が小さいとき)に対して、ファイバの出力部で、主偏波状態(PSP)と呼ばれる2つの直交する偏波の間に微分群遅延(DGD)が存在する。直接検波式の受信器で、2つのPSPで揃えられた強度が一体に加算し、結果としてパルスの拡張および記号間の干渉につながる。PMDは普通ではPMDベクトル
T.Takahashiら[Electronics Letters、Vol.30、348〜350頁(1994年)]およびF.Royら[Proceedings of Optical Fiber Communications Conference 1999年、論文TuS4、Vol.1、275〜277頁]によって提案された第1の次数のPMDを補償する1つの方法はシステムの出力部で偏波制御器(PC)および固定の微分群遅延素子(例えばある長さの偏波保持ファイバ)を使用することである。PCを調節することによって、システム全体(伝送リンク+補償器)の第1の次数のPMDベクトルは強制的に伝送リンクへの発射偏波と揃えられることが可能となる。したがって、発射偏波がシステム全体(リンク+補償器)の主偏波状態である。この補償器の動作はよく知られており、いくつかの研究室レベルの実験と現場での試用が試験されてきた。
Claims (7)
- 光ファイバ伝送システムであって、
キャリア周波数ω 0 を含む周波数範囲の光源と、
光ファイバ伝送路とを含み、前記光ファイバ伝送路は望ましくない偏波モード分散(PMD)を受けるものであり、さらに、
前記PMDの効果を低減する偏波モード分散補償器を含み、前記補償器は、前記ω 0 におけるPMDベクトルを補償する第1の補償用部品と、前記ω 0 におけるPMDベクトル対周波数曲線の勾配を補償する第2の補償用部品と、前記PMDベクトル対周波数曲線の勾配が周波数に伴って変化する率を補償する第3の補償用部品とを含み、
前記第1、第2及び第3の補償用部品の各々は、光ビームの偏波を回転させる偏波制御器と、2つの経路の間で前記光ビームの偏波成分を分割する偏波ビーム・スプリッタであって、前記2つの経路が特定の次数のそれぞれ異なる分散を有する素子を含む、前記偏波ビーム・スプリッタと、前記偏波成分を再度組み合わせる偏波ビーム・コンバイナとを含むことを特徴とする偏波モード分散補償器。 - 前記偏波ビーム・スプリッタの後ろの経路の各々が前記特定の次数の分散を有する素子を含み、それらの分散の値が異なる、請求項1に記載の偏波モード分散補償器。
- 前記偏波ビーム・スプリッタの後ろの経路の各々が前記特定の次数の分散を有する素子を含み、それらの分散の値が等しい大きさであるが反対の記号である、請求項1に記載の偏波モード分散補償器。
- 前記特定の次数の分散を有する素子が調整可能な分散を有する、請求項2に記載の偏波モード分散補償器。
- 前記特定の次数の分散を有する素子が固定の分散を有する、請求項2に記載の偏波モード分散補償器。
- 前記特定の次数の分散を有する素子が調整可能な分散を有する、請求項3に記載の偏波モード分散補償器。
- 前記特定の次数の分散を有する素子が固定の分散を有する、請求項3に記載の偏波モード分散補償器。
