Description
本願は2002年7月25日に出願した米国仮出願No.60/398,376号に基づき優先権主張するものである。
本発明は、ゴルフボールに係、好ましくは、反復使用のための改良された耐久性を持つカバー層のようなポリウレタン、ポリウレア又はポリウレタン/ポリウレアの組成を持つゴルフボールに関する。
伝統的なゴルフボールのカバーは弾性或いは可塑性の材料を持つバラタ又はバラタの混合材から成る。この伝統的なカバーは比較的ソフトで又可撓性を有する。インパクトのときに、このソフトなバラタカバーはクラブの表面に対して押しつけて高いスピンを生み出す。従って、このソフトで可撓性のあるバラタカバーは熟練のゴルファーにスピンをコントロールしてドローやフェード或いはバックスピンを生み出す能力を与え、これにより、グリーンに接触した時にボールが“バイト”、即ち、ぴたりと止まるようにすることができる。さらに、ソフトなバラタカバーは低いハンデキャップのプレーヤーに対してソフトな感触を与える。このようなプレー能力(作用性、感触等)は特にスイングスピードの遅いショートアイアンのプレーで特に重要で、また、比較的上級のプレーヤーによって利用される。
更に、一又は複数のアイオノマー樹脂又は他の材料が全体の距離、プレイ性及び耐久性の望ましい特性を持つゴルフボールを製造するために製造されてきた。
本発明の目的は、反復使用に対して改良された耐久性を有するソフトで、ポリウレタン、ポリウレア又はポリウレタン/ポリウレアのゴルフボール組成を持つゴルフボールを提供することにある。本発明の他の目的はそのようなゴルフボールの製造方法を提供することにある。
以下は、本発明の目的のために示される図面の簡単な説明であり、本発明の目的を特定するものでなない。
好ましい実施例の詳細な説明
本発明は、ソフトで高いメルトインデックスを持つ熱可塑性のポリウレタン、ポリウレア、又はポリウレタン/ポリウレア材料を有するゴルフボールカバー層のようなモールド成形されたゴルフボール要素に向けられる。好ましくは、ゴルフボール要素は、比較的薄い(即ち、0.075インチ以下、好ましくは0.050インチ以下、より好ましくは0.040インチ以下、さらに好ましくは0.030インチ以下、最も好ましくは0.025インチ以下)外側カバー層を有する。ゴルフボール要素は、選択的に、イソシアネート溶液のような2次的硬化剤、架橋剤又は処理剤にさらされてモールド成形された最終の要素の特定の性質(耐久性等)を改善する。
好ましくは、内側カバー層は外側カバー層より硬く、また、通常、1.68インチのボールでは、0.010インチから0.150インチ、好ましくは0.010インチから0.100インチ、より好ましくは0.020インチから0.060インチの厚さ、また、1.72インチ(又はそれ以上)のボールでは、0.030インチから0.100インチの厚さである。コアと内側層は共に反発係数が0.780以上、より好ましくは0.790以上で、1.68インチのボールについては直径が1.48インチから1.67インチ、1.71インチから1.72インチ(又はそれ以上)のボールに対しては1.50インチの内側ボールを形成する。内側カバー層はショア D で65以上(又はショア C で約80以上)の硬度を持つ。本発明のゴルフボールが65以上のショア D 硬度(又は少なくとも約100ショア D 硬度)を持つと特に有利である。内側カバー層が薄すぎるとショア D 硬度を正確に測定することが難しく、場合によっては、ショア Cの方が正確名場合もある。更に、コアがさらに硬いと、測定に影響する場合がある。材料のプラークでショア Cや ショア Dが測定されると、異なる測定結果となる。内側カバー層の上記特性はPGAコンプレッション100以下の内側ボールを提供する。内側ボールが90以下のPGAコンプレッションを持つと、優れたプレイ性をもたらすことがわかっている。
トリウム、マグネシウム、等の塩であり、特性に差異がある。
この柔らかさは典型的にはバラタ又はバラタが混合したボールに関連する感触とプレイ性の特性を与える。外側カバー層又はプライは、比較的柔らかい、低いモジュラス(約1,000psiから約30,000psi、好ましくは約5,000psiから約20,000psi)のポリウレタン、ポリウレア又はポリウレタン/ポリウレア、又は2以上のポリウレタンの混合物、又は1以上のアイオノマー又は1以上の非アイオノマー熱可塑性材料とポリウレタン、好ましくは熱可塑性ポリウレタンとのの混合物からなる。外側カバー層は、0.005インチ、好ましくは0.010から0.075インチ、より好ましくは0.015インチから0.050インチの厚さを持ち、少ない費用で所望のプレイ性を達成している。厚さはディンプルのない領域の平均の厚さによって決められる。外側カバー層16は60以下のショアD硬度(約90以下のショアC)、より好ましくは55以下(85から88のショアC)の硬度を持つ。もし、外側層が薄すぎると、ショアD硬度を正確に測定することが難しく、時には外側層としてはショアCが正確な値を示す。更に、内側層及び/又はコアが外側層より硬いと、測定値に影響がでる。もし、ショアC又はショアDを材料のプラークで測定すると異なる結果となる。

他の柔らかい、比較的低いモジュラの非アイオノマー熱可塑性ポリウレタンは、非アイオノマー材料が所望の優れたメルトインデックスを示し、また所望のプレイ性能と耐久性を示すのであれば、外側カバー層の形成にも使用することができる。これらには、これに限定するものではないが、Dow Chemical Co.からのPellethane(登録商標)熱可塑性ポリウレタンのような熱可塑性ポリウレタンを含む。

本発明のゴルフボールのコアは、代表的には、約0.750以上、より好ましくは0.770以上に反発係数を持ち、約90以下、より好ましくは70以下のPGAコンプレッションを有する。更に、ある適用例では、コアに約0.780から0.790の反発係数を与えることが望ましい。本発明のゴルフボールに使用されるコアは好ましくはソリッドである。ここで使用される用語“ソリッドコア”は、ワンピースのコアのみでなく、中央のコアの上で、カバーの下にある分離された固体の層を持つコアの意味でも使用される。コアは、25−40グラム、好ましくは30−40グラムの重量を持つ。本発明のゴルフボールがソリッドコアを有するとき、このコアは、cis含量の高いポリブタジエンと、亜鉛モノ−又はジアクリレート又はメタクリレートのような、α,β,エチレン結合不飽和カルボン酸の金属塩を含む、未硬化のあるいは軽度に硬化されたエラストマー組成のスラグを圧縮成形により成形することができる。高い反発係数及び/又は硬度を増すために、製造業者は酸化亜鉛のような金属を少量だけ含ませることができる。更に、所望の係数を達成するために必要となる以上の大量の酸化金属を、最終製品のボールの重量がU.S.G.A.の上限の1.620オンスに近づけるために含ませることができる。コア組成として使用される他の材料には、限定されるものではないが、適合するゴム又はアイオノマー及び、ステアリン酸のような低分子重量の脂肪酸を含む。加熱、加圧されるとき、硬化あるいは架橋反応が起きるように、過酸化物のようなフリーラジカル開始剤触媒がコア成分に予め混合される。
本発明によるゴルフボールの製造においては、内側カバー層、好ましくは硬い内側カバー層が、コア(好ましくはソリッドコア)の周りにモールド成形(例えば、注入成形又は加圧成型)される。比較的柔らかい外側カバー層が内側カバー層の上にモールド成形(例えば、注入成形又は反応注入成形)される。
ゴルフボールの製造の後の後処理が施される。このような添加物には、これらに限定されるものではないが、イソシアネート、キャップドイソシアネート、過酸化物、シラン、シロキサン、不飽和モノマー及びオリゴマー、飽和モノマー及びオリゴマー、シリコン、TPU/シリコン、コポリマー、照射、カルボキシル化されたモノマー及びオリゴマー又は他の機能化モノマー又はオリゴマー、強化材、非強化材のような充填材、処理済又は非処理の、他の材料及び/又はポリマー(芳香族又は脂肪族)を伴う異なるTPU、及びZylon(商標)架橋添加剤がある。
熱可塑性ポリウレタンカバーを持つゴルフボールが製造された。このゴルフボールは二重のコアと、高流動性アイオノマーの内側カバー層、熱可塑性ポリウレタン外側カバー層により造られる。カバー層の組成は下記の表に示される。ゴルフボールは110°Fから120°Fに加熱され、下記に示すイソシアネートの異なる濃度の溶液に浸漬される。ボールは2又は5分間浸漬される。浸漬の後、ボールは約1時間、空気乾燥され、続いて180°Fで約16時間、オーブンの中に置かれる。オーブンから取り出した後、いくらかの残流物が見られた。各グループから3個のボールイソプロパノールで洗浄され、ぼろで乾燥された。全てのボールは通常のクリア下塗とトップコートで仕上げられた。ボールは、次に、耐切傷性についてテストされた。結果は、以下の表6に示される。イソシアネートに浸漬されない数個のボールもテストされ、その結果は下記の表6に示されている。

一連のゴルフボールはベース材料、即ち、精製されない(又は処理されない)材料で製造された。これにより得られるボールの構造と特性の性質は下記に示す。
Claims (7)
- コアとカバーを有し、カバーはショアD硬度が50以下で断面の厚さが 0.040 in ( 1.02mm )以下であり、成形前で200℃から210℃の温度、8.7kg負荷で15g/10分以上のメルトインデックスを持つポリウレタン、ポリウレア又はポリウレタン/ポリウレア成分を有する熱可塑性の材料からモールド成形され、前記熱可塑性材料のメルトインデックスは当該材料の分子量を減らすことにより高められたものであり、前記カバーは成形後にイソシアネートを有する2次硬化剤により処理されるゴルフボール。
- 前記カバーの断面の厚さが 0.03in(o.76mm) 以下である請求項1に記載のゴルフボール。
- 前記材料のメルトインデックスが、成形前で200℃から210℃の温度、8.7kg負荷で20g/10分以上である請求項1に記載のゴルフボール。
- 前記材料のメルトインデックスが、成形前で200℃から210℃の温度、8.7kg負荷で25g/10分以上である請求項1に記載のゴルフボール。
- 前記材料のメルトインデックスが、成形前で200℃から210℃の温度、8.7kg負荷で30g/10分以上である請求項1に記載のゴルフボール。
