Description
Phys.
Phys. J. Appl.

Phys. J. Appl.

Phys.

[0001]
[Prior art]
Conventionally, as a thin film type electroluminescent (EL) element, there are ZnS, CaS, SrS, etc., which are II-VI group compound semiconductors of inorganic materials, Mn or rare earth elements (Eu, Ce, Tb, Sm, etc.) that are emission centers. ) Is generally used, but an EL element made from the above inorganic material is
1) AC drive is required (50-1000Hz),
2) High drive voltage (~ 200V),
3) Full color is difficult (especially blue is a problem)
4) The cost of the peripheral drive circuit is high.
Has the problem.
[0002]
However, in recent years, EL devices using organic thin films have been developed to improve the above problems. In particular, in order to improve luminous efficiency, the type of electrode is optimized for the purpose of improving the efficiency of carrier injection from the electrode, and a hole transporting layer made of aromatic diamine and a light emitting layer made of 8-hydroxyquinoline aluminum complex, Development of an organic electroluminescent device equipped with a light emitting diode (Appl. Phys. Lett., 51, 913, 1987) significantly improves luminous efficiency compared to conventional EL devices using single crystals such as anthracene. Has been made and practical characteristics are approaching.
[0003]
In addition to electroluminescent devices using low molecular materials as described above, as a material for the light emitting layer, poly (p-phenylene vinylene) (Nature, 347, 539, 1990, etc.), poly [2-methoxy -5- (2-ethylhexyloxy) -1,4-phenylenevinylene] (Appl. Phys. Lett., 58, 1982, 1991, etc.), poly (3-alkylthiophene) (Jpn. J. Appl. Phys, Vol. 30, L1938, 1991, etc.) Development of electroluminescent devices using polymer materials, such as polyvinyl carbazole, and other devices that mix low molecular light emitting materials and electron transfer materials (applied physics) , 61, 1044, 1992).
[0004]
Further, for example, doping with a fluorescent dye for laser such as coumarin using an aluminum complex of 8-hydroxyquinoline as a host material (J. Appl. Phys., 65, 3610, 1989) is also performed. . The advantages of this method are:
1) Luminous efficiency is improved by highly efficient fluorescent dyes.
2) The emission wavelength is variable by selecting the fluorescent dye.
3) Fluorescent dyes that cause concentration quenching can also be used.
4) Thin fluorescent fluorescent dyes can be used.
Etc.
[0005]
In the organic electroluminescence device as described above, a transparent electrode such as indium tin oxide (ITO) is usually used as an anode, but a metal having a low work function is used as a cathode for efficient electron injection. Electrodes such as magnesium alloy and calcium are used. The biggest problem with organic electroluminescent devices is the lifetime of the device, and one factor that limits the lifetime is the generation of dark spots (portions that do not emit light at the light emitting portion of the device) derived from the cathode material. The dark spot refers to a non-light-emitting portion generated in the light emitting surface in the organic electroluminescence device when the organic electroluminescence device is stored for a long time or is driven for a long time. This dark spot increases in number and size during storage and driving, resulting in a decrease in light emission luminance, and as a result, limits the lifetime of the device. In contrast, for the purpose of improving the adhesion to the cathode, an interface layer made of an aromatic amine compound is provided between the cathode and the organic light emitting layer to try to reduce dark spots (Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 5-048075), the current situation is that the practical level has not been reached.
[0006]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
In order to apply the organic electroluminescent element to a light source such as a flat panel display or a backlight, it is necessary to sufficiently ensure the reliability of the element. However, conventional organic electroluminescence devices have insufficient heat resistance, and current-voltage characteristics shift to a higher voltage side due to an increase in the environmental temperature and process temperature of the device, or due to local Joule heating during device driving. Since the lifetime is reduced and the generation and increase of non-light-emitting portions (dark spots) occur, and the deterioration of the device is inevitable, the reliability cannot be said to be sufficient.
[0007]
The main cause of the deterioration of the element is deterioration of the thin film shape of the organic layer. It is considered that the deterioration of the thin film shape is caused by crystallization (or aggregation) of the organic amorphous thin film due to a temperature rise due to heat generation at the time of element driving. This low heat resistance is thought to originate from the low glass transition temperature (hereinafter abbreviated as Tg) of the material. Many low molecular weight compounds (molecular weight of about 400 to 600), particularly hole transport materials, have low melting points and high symmetry. The typical aromatic amine compounds that have been frequently used so far as hole transport materials for organic electroluminescent devices are shown below.

[Formula 4]
[0011]
Tg of aromatic diamine (A-1), N, N'-diphenyl-N, N '-(3-methylphenyl) -1,1'-biphenyl-4,4'-diamine (usually called TPD) is 60 ° C., Tg of starburst type aromatic triamine (A-2) is 75 ° C. (J. Phys. Chem., 97, 6240, 1993), and 4,4 ′ introduced with α-naphthyl group The Tg of -bis [N- (1-naphthyl) -N-phenylamino] biphenyl (A-3) is 96 ° C. (IEICE Technical Report, OME9554, 1995). Organic amorphous thin films formed from these aromatic amine compounds are crystallized as the temperature rises, or cause an interdiffusion phenomenon in a two-layer element structure of a hole transport layer and an electron transport layer. As a result, a deterioration phenomenon in which the light emission characteristics of the element, in particular, the drive voltage becomes high appears, and eventually the drive life is shortened. Further, even when the device is not driven, the temperature is expected to increase in steps such as vapor deposition, baking (annealing), wiring, and sealing during the device fabrication, and therefore it is desirable that Tg be higher. In order to increase the melting point and Tg, it has been studied to make the molecular structure rigid, and the following aromatic diamine compounds have been synthesized.

[0014]
The melting point of N, N′-di (N-carbazolyl) biphenyl (A-4) is as high as 283 ° C. (The 65th Annual Meeting of the Chemical Society of Japan, 3C6, 43, 1993), but the ionization potential is 5.86 eV. It is higher than 5.15 eV of TPD (A-1) that has been used so far, which is not preferable. It can also be seen that a uniform film cannot be formed, and only a film having an aggregated structure can be obtained from the beginning, and the influence of the high symmetry of the molecular structure is large. 4,4 ', 4 "-tricarbazolyltriphenylamine (A-5) which is a starburst type triphenylamine (Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 3-232856, Adv. Mater., 6, 677, 1994, special The Tg of Kaihei 7-110940) shows a high value of 151 ° C., but this also has a high ionization potential of 5.7 eV, resulting in a high driving voltage, which is preferable as a hole transport material for organic electroluminescent devices. Absent.
[0015]
On the other hand, an attempt has been made to use a polymer material as a hole transport layer of an organic electroluminescence device instead of a low molecular weight compound. Polyvinylcarbazole (Technical Report of IEICE, OME90-38, 1990), Polysilane (Appl. Phys. Lett., 59, 2760, 1991), Polyphosphazene (The 42nd Annual Meeting of the Polymer Society of Japan) (Convention, I-8-07 and I-8-08, 1993) have been reported, but polyvinylcarbazole has a high Tg of 200 ° C, but there are problems such as traps, etc. Due to deterioration and the like, the driving life is as short as a few seconds, and polyphosphazene has a high ionization potential and does not show characteristics superior to those of conventional aromatic diamines. In addition, a hole transport layer in which an aromatic diamine compound is dispersed in polycarbonate or PMMA in an amount of 30 to 80% by weight has been studied (Jpn. J. Appl. Phys., Vol. 31, L960, 1992). The low molecular weight compound acts as a plasticizer to lower Tg, and the device characteristics are also lowered as compared with the case where the aromatic diamine compound is used alone.
[0016]
That is, the hole transport material is required to have both high Tg and low ionization potential properties.
For the above-mentioned reasons, the conventional organic electroluminescence device has a serious problem in the heat resistance and driving life of the device when put into practical use.
The fact that the heat resistance of organic electroluminescent elements is not improved and the luminescent characteristics are unstable is a major problem for light sources such as facsimiles, copiers, and backlights of liquid crystal displays, and also as display elements for flat panel displays and the like. This is an undesirable characteristic. This is particularly serious when considering application to in-vehicle displays.
[0017]
In view of the above circumstances, the present inventor has intensively studied for the purpose of providing an organic electroluminescent device capable of maintaining stable light emission characteristics at a high temperature. As a result, 4,4′-bis (N The inventors have found that the above problem can be solved by a -carbazolyl) diphenylamine derivative and an organic electroluminescent device using the same, and have completed the present invention.

[0055]
In order to improve the light emission efficiency of the device or improve the drive life of the device, it is effective to dope a fluorescent dye with a hole transport material or an electron transport material forming the light emitting layer as a host material. For example, a metal complex such as an aluminum complex of 8-hydroxyquinoline used as an electron transport material as a host material, a fluorescent dye for laser such as coumarin, a naphthacene derivative typified by rubrene, a quinacridone derivative, a condensed polycycle such as perylene By doping the aromatic ring in an amount of 0.1 to 10% by weight with respect to the host material, the light emission characteristics of the device, particularly the driving stability, can be greatly improved. As a method of doping the light emitting layer host material with a fluorescent dye such as the naphthacene derivative, quinacridone derivative, and perylene, there are a method by co-evaporation and a method in which a deposition source is mixed in advance at a predetermined concentration.
[0056]
When each said dopant is doped in a light emitting layer, although doped uniformly in the film thickness direction of a light emitting layer, there may exist concentration distribution in a film thickness direction. For example, it may be doped only near the interface with the hole transport layer, or conversely, doped near the cathode interface.
As a method for further improving the luminous efficiency of the organic electroluminescent device, as shown in FIG. 4, an electron injection layer 5b can be further laminated on the electron transport layer 5a. The compound used for the electron injection layer 5b is required to be capable of easily injecting electrons from the cathode and further having an electron transport capability. Examples of such an electron transport material include 8-hydroxyquinoline aluminum complexes, oxadiazole derivatives, and systems in which they are dispersed in a resin such as polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), phenanthroline derivatives, 2 -t-butyl-9,10-N, N'-dicyanoanthraquinone diimine, n-type hydrogenated amorphous silicon carbide, n-type zinc sulfide, n-type zinc selenide and the like. EXAMPLES Next, although an Example demonstrates this invention further more concretely, this invention is not limited to description of a following example, unless the summary is exceeded.
[Production Example of Exemplary Compound (1) in Table-1]
4.57 g of triphenylamine, 20.56 g of benzyltrimethylammonium dichloroiodate, and 7.63 g of calcium carbonate were added to a mixed solvent of 75 ml of dichloromethane and 30 ml of methanol, and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 7.5 hours. After completion of the reaction, the remaining calcium carbonate was filtered off, and the filtrate was reduced with an aqueous sodium sulfite solution and separated to recover the organic layer. The organic layer was dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate overnight, and then the solvent was distilled off. This crude product was dissolved in acetone and then released into a large amount of methanol, the precipitate was filtered off, and the filtrate was recovered. Thereafter, the solvent was distilled off to obtain a light brown diiodide. Yield 4.84 g (52% yield).
[0061]
Next, 5.00 g of this diiodo compound, 6.17 g of carbazole, 5.46 g of potassium carbonate, and 0.89 g of copper iodide were added to 40 ml of nitrobenzene and reacted at 200 ° C. for 31 hours under nitrogen. After completion of the reaction, nitrobenzene was distilled off from the nitrobenzene solution from which insolubles had been removed by filtration using a steam distillation method. The precipitated dark brown crude product was dissolved in a mixed solvent of acetone: toluene and dried overnight over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, and then the solvent was distilled off and purified by column chromatography using silica gel to obtain 0.74 g of A light orange powder was obtained. The yield was 12%. Mass analysis of this compound revealed that it had a molecular weight of 575 and was confirmed to be the target compound (1) by IR spectrum (FIG. 7) and NMR spectrum (FIG. 8). The melting point was measured and found to be 244 ° C. Further, when differential thermal analysis measurement was performed with DSC-20 manufactured by Seiko Denshi, Tg showed a high value of 105 ° C.

The glass substrate is ultrasonically cleaned with acetone, pure water, ultrasonically cleaned with isopropyl alcohol, dried with dry nitrogen, and then installed in a vacuum evaporation system. The degree of vacuum in the system is 2x10.-6It exhausted using the oil diffusion pump provided with the liquid nitrogen trap until it became Torr or less. The compound (1) placed in a ceramic crucible arranged in the above apparatus was heated by a tantalum wire heater around the crucible to perform vapor deposition. At this time, the temperature of the crucible was controlled in the range of 280 to 290 ° C. Degree of vacuum during deposition is 3.2x10-6Torr (approximately 4.3x10-FourPa), a thin film having a film thickness of 73 nm was obtained at a deposition rate of 0.5 nm / second.
When the ionization potential of this thin film sample was measured using an ultraviolet electron analyzer (AC-1) manufactured by Riken Keiki Co., Ltd., it showed a low value of 5.28 eV. Further, even when this thin film sample was stored in the atmosphere for 200 days, the shape of the film remained stable and uniform, and no crystallization was observed.
