【0001】
液晶表示方式としては、その代表的なものにTN(捩れネマチック)型、STN(超捩れネマチック)型、DS(動的光散乱)型、GH(ゲスト・ホスト)型あるいはFLC(強誘電性液晶)等が知られているが、このうち現在最もよく用いられているのはTN型及びSTN型である。

[0003]
The liquid crystal material used in this active matrix display system is required to have various characteristics as in the case of a normal liquid crystal display. In particular, (1) the temperature range of the liquid crystal phase is wide, and (2) the specific resistance is high. Four points are important: high, excellent voltage holding ratio, (3) low threshold voltage (V th ), and (4) appropriate refractive index anisotropy (Δn).
[0004]
In order to lower the threshold voltage in liquid crystal display, it is necessary to increase the dielectric anisotropy (Δε) of the liquid crystal material. Usually, in order to increase Δε of the liquid crystal composition, a compound having a cyano group is often used. However, it is difficult for the compound having a cyano group to obtain a high specific resistance value and voltage holding ratio of the liquid crystal composition. Have a tendency to Therefore, it is necessary to use a fluorine-based liquid crystal material instead of a cyano compound for the above-described purpose.
[0005]
Further, in the liquid crystal display, in order to prevent the cell from being colored, it is necessary to set the product (Δn · d) of the cell thickness (d) and Δn to a specific value. (Δn · d) can have several discontinuous values. However, in active matrix driving, the minimum value of 0.5 (first minimum) is often used. Since the cell thickness (d) cannot be made very thin, Δn of the liquid crystal material needs to be small to some extent.
[0006]
In order to expand the temperature range of the liquid crystal composition to a particularly high temperature range, a tricyclic or tetracyclic liquid crystal compound is used. However, among the fluorine-based liquid crystal compounds as described above, there are few tricyclic compounds having sufficiently high T N-I (nematic phase upper limit temperature), and therefore a tetracyclic compound may be required. Many.
[0007]
Examples of fluorinated tetracyclic liquid crystal compounds known so far are shown below.
[0008]
[Chemical formula 2]
[0009]
(In the formula, R ′ represents an alkyl group, X represents a hydrogen atom or a fluorine atom. Although not specifically shown in the formula, the benzene ring may be further substituted with fluorine.)
Among these, the compounds of the general formulas (IIA) and (IIB) have a large Δn and are not compatible. In the compounds of the general formulas (IIC) and (IID), Δn is slightly large, and addition thereof greatly increases the Vth of the composition. Further, the compound of the general formula (IIE) has a problem that it is difficult to produce the tercyclohexyl skeleton.
[0010]
Therefore, it is a fluorine-based tetracyclic liquid crystal compound having a high TN-I , Δn is small to some extent, good compatibility with other liquid crystal compounds, and even if it is added, the Vth of the composition is increased significantly. There has been a need for compounds that do not.
[0011]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In order to solve the above problems, the present invention provides a compound represented by the general formula (I)
[0012]
[Chemical 3]
[0013]
(Wherein R represents an alkyl group having 1 to 12 carbon atoms, preferably a linear alkyl group having 1 to 7 carbon atoms. Y 1 and Y 2 are each independently a hydrogen atom or Represents a fluorine atom, preferably at least one represents a fluorine atom, Z represents a fluorine atom, a trifluoromethyl group, a trifluoromethoxy group or a difluoromethoxy group, preferably a fluorine atom, and a cyclohexane ring. Is a transformer arrangement.)
The phenylbicyclohexane derivative represented by these is provided.
[0014]
Among the compounds of the general formula (I) of the present invention, a compound in which at least one of Y 1 , Y 2 and Z represents a fluorine atom is preferable, and at least two of Y 1 , Y 2 and Z are fluorine. Particularly preferred are compounds representing atoms.
[0015]
More specifically, it is preferable that Z represents a fluorine atom, (1) Y 1 and Z both represent a fluorine atom, Y 2 represents a hydrogen atom, or (2) Y 1 , Y 2 and Z are Compounds that all represent fluorine atoms are preferred.
[0016]
In the above compounds, R preferably represents a linear alkyl group having 1 to 7 carbon atoms.
The greatest feature of the nematic liquid crystal compound represented by the general formula (I) of the present invention is a fluorine-based tetracyclic compound having a high TN-I. By adding it, the liquid crystal phase upper limit temperature of the composition can be increased. The Vth is not increased so much in spite of a significant increase in the high temperature range, and is particularly suitable as a liquid crystal material for driving an active matrix.
[0017]
The compound represented by the general formula (I) of the present invention can be produced, for example, according to any of the following production steps A to D.

By reacting the Wittig reactant represented by the general formula (IIb) with the bicyclohexanecarbaldehyde derivative represented by the general formula (IIIb) in the same manner as in the production step A, ethenylbicyclohexane represented by the general formula (IVb) is produced. [0027]
Examples of typical compounds represented by the general formula (I) thus produced are listed in Table 1.
[0028]
[Table 1]
[0029]
(In the table, C represents a crystalline phase, SB represents a smectic B phase, N represents a nematic phase, and I represents an isotropic liquid phase.)
From Table 1, the compound represented by the general formula (I) of the present invention has a high TN-I . Therefore, the transition temperature can be greatly increased by adding to a normal base liquid crystal. Moreover, as will be described later, the threshold voltage of the composition is hardly increased by addition.
[0030]
Therefore, the compound of the general formula (I) of the present invention can be suitably used as a material for a field effect display cell such as a TN type or STN type in a mixture with other nematic liquid crystal compounds. Moreover, since the compound of the general formula (I) does not have a strong polar group such as a cyano group or an ester bond in the molecule, it is easy to obtain a large specific resistance and a high voltage holding ratio. Therefore, it is particularly suitable as a constituent component of the active matrix driving liquid crystal material.
[0031]
The present invention also provides a liquid crystal composition containing at least one compound represented by the general formula (I) as a constituent component.
In the liquid crystal composition of the present invention, preferred representative examples of the nematic liquid crystal compound that can be used by mixing with the compound of the general formula (I) include, for example, 4-substituted phenyl benzoate, 4-substituted phenyl, and 4-substituted cyclohexane. [0032]
Among these, for active matrix driving, 4,4′-substituted biphenyl, 1- (4-substituted cyclohexyl) -4-substituted benzene, 4,4′-substituted bicyclohexane, 1- [2- (4-substituted cyclohexyl) Ethyl] -4-substituted benzene, 1- (4-substituted cyclohexyl) -2- (4-substituted cyclohexyl) ethane, 4,4 "-substituted terphenyl, 4- (4-substituted cyclohexyl) -4'-substituted biphenyl 4- [2- (4-substituted cyclohexyl) ethyl] -4′-substituted biphenyl, 4- (4-substituted phenyl) -4′-substituted bicyclohexane, 4- [2- (4-substituted cyclohexyl) ethyl] -4'-substituted biphenyl, 4- [2- (4-substituted cyclohexyl) ethyl] cyclohexyl-4'-substituted benzene, 4- [2- (4-substituted phenyl) ethyl] -4'-substituted bicyclohexane, 1- (4-substituted phenylethynyl) -4-substituted benzene, 1- (4-substituted phenylethynyl) -4- (4-substituted cyclohexyl) benzene and the above, the benzene ring is substituted with fluorine Suitable compounds are suitable.
[0033]
The effect of the compound of the general formula (I) of the present invention was also shown in Examples described later, but is also apparent from the following examples.
Matrix liquid crystal (M) particularly suitable as an active matrix as a nematic liquid crystal material
[0034]
[Chemical 8]
[0035]
(Wherein the cyclohexane ring represents a trans configuration) shows a nematic phase at 116.7 ° C. or lower, and Δε is 4.7. A threshold voltage of a TN cell having a cell thickness of 8 μm fabricated using this nematic phase. (V th ) is 2.49V. The Δn was 0.090.
[0036]
A liquid crystal composition (M-1) comprising 80% by weight of the base liquid crystal (M) and 20% by weight of the compound (No. 1) in Table 1 was prepared, and its TN-I was 148.5 ° C. And rose significantly. Further, Δε was slightly increased to 4.8. A cell was prepared in the same manner and its Vth was measured. As a result, the increase was 2.66 V, which was slight. Further, the Δn was not changed from 0.090. Furthermore, the specific resistance of this composition was as large as 10 12 Ωcm or more, and the voltage holding ratio of this cell was very high.
[0037]
On the other hand, it replaces with the compound of (No. 1) and has the structure (R-1) which has a similar structure of this compound.
[0038]
[Chemical 9]
[0039]
Was used to prepare a liquid crystal composition (MR-1) comprising 80% by weight of the same base liquid crystal (M) and 20% by weight of the compound of formula (R-1). The TN-I of (MR-1) was 149.4 ° C., almost the same as (M-1). However, even though Δε was 5.2, which was larger than (M−1), V th measured by similarly producing the cell was 2.70 V, which was higher than (M−1). . Furthermore, Δn increased to 0.105.
[0040]
Next, a liquid crystal composition (M-3) comprising 80% by weight of the same base liquid crystal (M) and 20% by weight of the compound (No. 3) in Table 1 was prepared. TN-I of (M-3) was 141.5 ° C., which was significantly higher than that of the base liquid crystal (M). Δε was as large as 5.5, and V th obtained by measuring the cell in the same manner was 2.47 V, which was lower than that of the base liquid crystal (M). Further, Δn was 0.090, which was not different from that of the base liquid crystal (M). Furthermore, the specific resistance of this composition was as large as 10 12 Ωcm or more, and the voltage holding ratio of this cell was very high.
[0041]
From the above, the compound of the general formula (I) of the present invention greatly increases the upper limit temperature of the nematic phase of the liquid crystal composition to a high temperature range, and at the same time, compared with conventionally known tetracyclic liquid crystal compounds. However, it is clear that the increase in Vth can be kept low, and Δn is not increased.

CDCl 3 in NMR represents a solvent, s represents a single line, d represents a double line, t represents a triple line, m represents a multiple line, and J represents a coupling constant. M + in MS represents the parent peak. Further, “%” in the composition represents “% by weight”.

Toluene was distilled off under reduced pressure, 300 ml of tetrahydrofuran (THF) was added, and the mixture was further heated to reflux for 5 hours. The mixture was allowed to cool to room temperature, and the precipitated crystals were separated by filtration and dried under reduced pressure to obtain 145.1 g of crystals of (trans-4-propylcyclohexylmethyl) triphenylphosphonium bromide. The residue obtained by concentrating the filtrate contains triphenylphosphine and 1-bromomethyl-trans-4-propylcyclohexane. This is dissolved in 25 ml of toluene, and the same operation is repeated. I got a thing.

[0047]
16.4 g of (trans-4-propylcyclohexylmethyl) triphenylphosphonium bromide obtained in Reference Example 1 was dissolved in 16 ml of toluene and 49 ml of THF, and cooled to -20 ° C. 4.08 g of potassium t-butoxy was added in two portions over 30 minutes, and the mixture was further stirred at 0 ° C. for 1 hour to prepare a Wittig reactant. A 15 ml toluene solution of 6.73 g of trans-4 ′-(3,4-difluorophenyl) bicyclohexane-4-carbaldehyde was added dropwise thereto over 30 minutes. The temperature was raised to room temperature, and the mixture was further stirred for 1 hour. The organic layers were combined and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. Toluene was distilled off under reduced pressure, 150 ml of hexane was added, and the precipitated crystals of triphenylphosphine oxide were separated by filtration. The filtrate was concentrated again to obtain 7.85 g of crystals of trans-4- [2- (trans-4-propylcyclohexyl) ethenyl] -trans-4 ′-(3,4-difluorophenyl) bicyclohexane. This whole amount was dissolved in 40 ml of ethyl acetate, 390 mg of 5% palladium carbon was added, and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 4 hours under a hydrogen pressure of 4 Kg / cm 2 . The crude crystals obtained by filtering the catalyst through diatomaceous earth and concentrating the filtrate were recrystallized from a mixed solvent of hexane / ethanol (3/1) to obtain trans-4- [2- (trans-4-propylcyclohexyl) ethyl. ] 5.90 g of crystals of -trans-4 '-(3,4-difluorophenyl) bicyclohexane were obtained. The melting point of this compound was 131 ° C., and when it was cooled from the isotropic liquid (I) phase, it transitioned to a nematic (N) phase at 253 ° C. and a smectic B (SB) phase at 150 ° C., respectively.
[0048]
Example 2 trans-4- [2- (trans-4-ethylcyclohexyl) ethyl] -trans-4 ′-(3,4-difluorophenyl) bicyclohexane (No. 2 compound in Table 1) In Example 1, except that (trans-4-propylcyclohexylmethyl) triphenylphosphonium bromide obtained in Reference Example 2 was used instead of (trans-4-propylcyclohexylmethyl) triphenylphosphonium bromide. In the same manner as in Example 1, trans-4- [2- (trans-4-ethylcyclohexyl) ethyl] -trans-4 ′-(3,4-difluorophenyl) bicyclohexane was obtained. The phase transition temperatures are summarized in Table 1.
[0049]
Comparative Example 1 Trans-4- [2- (trans-4-propylcyclohexyl) ethyl] -trans-4 ′-(3,4,5-trifluorophenyl) bicyclohexane (No. 3 in Table 1) In Example 1, instead of trans-4 ′-(3,4-difluorophenyl) bicyclohexane-4-one, trans-4 ′-(3,4,5-trifluorophenyl) biphenyl was synthesized. Trans-4- [2- (trans-4-propylcyclohexyl) ethyl] -trans-4 ′-(3,4,5-trifluorophenyl) bicyclohexane was used in the same manner except that cyclohexane-4-one was used. Got. The phase transition temperatures are summarized in Table 1.

In Comparative Example 1 , comparison was made except that (trans-4-ethylcyclohexylmethyl) triphenylphosphonium bromide obtained in Reference Example 2 was used instead of (trans-4-propylcyclohexylmethyl) triphenylphosphonium bromide. In the same manner as in Example 1 , trans-4- [2- (trans-4-ethylcyclohexyl) ethyl] -trans-4 ′-(3,4,5-trifluorophenyl) bicyclohexane was obtained. The phase transition temperatures are summarized in Table 1.

[0053]
(In the formula, the cyclohexane ring represents a trans configuration.) When prepared, the nematic (N) phase was exhibited at 116.7 ° C. or lower. The physical property values and the threshold voltage (V th ) of a TN cell having a cell thickness of 8 μm fabricated using the physical property values were as follows.
[0054]
Dielectric Anisotropy (Δε) 4.7
Refractive index anisotropy (Δn) 0.090
Threshold voltage (V th ) 2.49V
A liquid crystal composition (M-1) comprising 80% of the base liquid crystal (M) and 20% of the compound (No. 1) obtained in Example 1 was prepared. The upper limit temperature (T N-I ) of N phase of (M-1) and the physical properties thereof were as follows.
[0055]
Upper limit temperature of N phase (T N-I ) 148.5 ° C
Dielectric anisotropy (Δε) 4.8
Refractive index anisotropy (Δn) 0.090
Threshold voltage (V th ) 2.66V
Thus, although TN-I rose significantly compared with the base liquid crystal (M), the increase in Vth was only 0.17V. Further, the Δn was not changed from 0.090. Furthermore, the specific resistance of this composition was as large as 10 12 Ωcm or more, and the voltage holding ratio of this cell was very high.
[0056]
Therefore, it is clear that the compound of the general formula (I) is extremely useful as a liquid crystal material for an active matrix for the preparation of a liquid crystal composition having a high maximum liquid crystal phase temperature and a low threshold voltage.
Comparative Example 3 Preparation of Liquid Crystal Composition (2) A liquid crystal composition (M-3) comprising 80% of the base liquid crystal (M) and 20% of the compound (No. 3) obtained in Example 3 was prepared. . T NI and property values of the (M-3) were as follows.
[0057]
Upper limit temperature of N phase (T N-I ) 141.2 ° C
Dielectric anisotropy (Δε) 5.5
Refractive index anisotropy (Δn) 0.090
Threshold voltage (V th ) 2.47V
As described above, although TN-I of (M-3) was significantly higher than that of the base liquid crystal (M), its Vth was lower than that of the base liquid crystal (M). Also, Δn did not change. Furthermore, the specific resistance of this composition was as large as 10 12 Ωcm or more, and the voltage holding ratio of the cell was very high.
[0058]
(Comparative Example 4 ) Formula (R-1) having a base liquid crystal (M) 80% and a similar structure of the compound of (No. 1)
[0059]

[0060]
A liquid crystal composition (MR-1) comprising 20% of the above compound was prepared. TN-I of this (MR-1) and its physical property values were as follows.
N phase upper limit temperature (T N-I ) 149.4 ° C
Dielectric Anisotropy (Δε) 5.1
Refractive index anisotropy (Δn) 0.105
Threshold voltage (V th ) 2.70V
Thus, TN-I of (MR-1) was slightly higher than (M-1), but its Vth was higher than (M-1). Furthermore, the Δn is considerably large as 0.105.
[0061]
【The invention's effect】
The compounds represented by the general formula (I) of the present invention can be produced very easily industrially as shown in the Examples, are chemically stable to heat, light, water, etc., and are nematic liquid crystals. It is also excellent in compatibility with currently used base liquid crystals. Moreover, by adding a small amount to the base liquid crystal, the upper limit temperature of the nematic phase can be greatly increased to a high temperature range without significantly increasing the threshold voltage (V th ) of the liquid crystal cell using it. Moreover, there is no strong polar group in the molecule, and a large specific resistance and a high voltage holding ratio can be easily obtained. Therefore, it is useful as various liquid crystal display elements in which the temperature range of the liquid crystal phase is wide and low voltage driving is required, particularly as a liquid crystal material for active matrix driving.
