Description

【発明の詳細な説明】 発明の背景 本発明は、一般的にいえば、販売端末装置に関する。
さらに詳細にいえば、本発明は、携帯して使用するする
ことが可能な販売端末装置に関する。
販売端末装置は、販売業務に関する情報を記録するた
めに、通常小売商店で使用される。この端末装置は、そ
の最も基本的な形式では、データを手動で入力するため
のキーボードと、顧客に渡す紙テープ領収書を印刷する
ための印刷装置とを有する。現在の多くの販売端末装置
は、販売される商品に印刷されたバー・コードを読み出
すためのバー・コード走査器を付随して有する。バー・
コード走査器は、販売の店頭でカウンタ・トップに組み
込まれた固定されたレーザ走査器の形式であるのが最も
普通である。他のバー・コード走査器は、バー・コード
を走査するための走査レーザ検出器または走査電荷結合
装置を備えた、携帯可能な走査器および携帯可能な電子
読取りペンを有している。
従来の販売端末装置はまた、通常、顧客のクレジット
・カードに記録されているデータを読み出すための磁気
読出し器を備えている。このデータの読み出しの後、顧
客のクレジット・カードは、電話線を通して、適切なデ
ータベースを電子的に呼び出して確認される。
前記で一般的に説明された販売端末装置は、販売業務
を実行するのに極めて効果的であることが確かめられて
いるが、これらの端末装置はすべての応用において、完
全に満足な性能を有していることが確かめられているわ
けではない。これらの端末装置は本質的に移動できない
ので、商品が小売商店から離れた遠隔の場所で販売され
る場合には、またはこのような小売商店の中の移動可能
な場所で商品を販売する場合には、これらの端末装置は
使用に適していない。したがって、通常の販売端末装置
の機能を有しており、かつ携帯可能である、販売端末装
置が要請されていることが分かるはずである。本発明に
より、この要請を満たす販売端末装置が得られる。
発明の要約 本発明により、通常の販売端末装置の機能を有し、か
つ遠隔のホスト・コンピュータと無線で通信することが
できる、任意の必要な位置に便利に移動できる寸法と構
成を有する、販売端末装置が得られる。この端末装置
は、正面板と、キーボードと、正面板に取り付けられた
表示装置とを備えた、携帯可能な収納器を有する。電源
は、収納器の中に配置される。遠隔のホスト・コンピュ
ータおよび遠隔の入力／出力装置に、および遠隔のホス
ト・コンピュータおよび遠隔の入力／出力装置から、デ
ータを無線でそれぞれ、送信および受信するために、第
１電磁気送受信器および第２電磁気送受信器が収納器の
中にまた配置される。第１電磁気送受信器は、第１搬送
波で変調されたデータを、拡散スペクトル方式で、送信
および受信することができる。一方、第２電磁気送受信
器は、第２搬送波で変調されたデータを、変調された第
１搬送波の電力スペクトルの零位に位置する狭帯域方式
で、送信および受信することができる。この方式では、
２個の送受信器は相互に妨害することなく、データを同
時に送信および受信することができる。
本発明のまた別の特徴は、収納器の正面板の中に作成
された凹部に個々に取り外し可能に取り付けることがで
きる寸法をおのおのが有する複数個のキーボードを、こ
の販売端末装置が有することである。キーボードのおの
おのは、１個または複数個の電池で構成される電源が収
納器から取り外された時にのみ、凹部に選択的に取り付
ける、または取り外すことができる。
本発明のさらに別の特徴は、細長い紙の上に情報を印
刷しそしてこの印刷された紙を収納器から送り出す印刷
装置が、収納器の中に配置されることであり、また、手
動で入力されたサインのような情報を検出するのに用い
られるサイン受取りスクリーンが、紙の経路のすぐ近く
の収納器の正面板の上に取り付けられることである。印
刷装置が、サイン受取りスクリーンの上から直接に、紙
を送り出すのが好都合である。それは、販売店で顧客が
紙の上に自分の名前をサインすることができるからであ
り、一方、スクリーンはそのサインを表すデータを自動
的に発生するからである。
その他の特徴および利点は、好ましい実施例に関する
添付図面を参照しての下記説明から明らかになるはずで
ある。下記の好ましい実施例は、本発明の原理を示すた
めに、例として示された実施例である。

好ましい実施例の説明 図面において、特に第１図および第２図において、小
売販売業務に付随する通常の機能を実行し、なおさらに
現場で完全に携帯可能である、販売端末装置11が示され
ている。この端末装置は、プラスチックの収納器（ハウ
ジング）13を有している。この収納器13には、その上に
キーボード組立体17が配置される通常は平らな正面板15
と、タッチ・パネルを備えた多重ライン液晶表示装置
（LCD）19と、プラスチックのクレジット・カードから
のデータを受け取るおよび読み出すための横方向の溝21
および磁気カード読取り装置23と、針ペンまたは書込み
ペン（図示されていない）により手動で入力される顧客
のサインまたはその他の情報をディジタルに受け取るの
に適合したスクリーン組立体25とを有する。LCD19を選
択的に用いることにより、オペレータが種々のオプショ
ンを選択するのを支援するために選定された情報を得る
ことができる。この収納器の中に配置された印刷装置27
は、紙ロール31（第６図）から受け取られた細長い紙29
の上に印刷を行い、そしてこの印刷された紙を収納器の
正面版15の上のサイン受取りスクリーン組立体25に送
る。
販売端末装置11は、標準的なノートの大きさと通常同
程度の寸法を有する。それにより、小売店の中または遠
隔の場所のいずれでも、販売業務が行われる任意の選定
された場所において、オペレータが便利に携帯すること
ができる。この端末装置は、無線データ・リンクを介し
て、データ通信ネットワークの携帯可能な中継器または
ノードとして機能する。
正面板15の上端の近くの収納器13の上側壁33に、複数
個の入力／出力接続器が配置される。このような接続器
（コネクタ）の１つ35は、販売される商品に印刷された
バー・コードを従来の方式で走査するのに用いるため
に、遠隔のバー・コード走査器すなわちワンド（図示さ
れていない）に接続される多線ケーブルを取り付けるこ
とができる。また別の接続器36は、販売端末装置11を動
作させるホスト・コンピュータ（図示されていない）に
接続される多線ケーブルを取り付けることができる。さ
らに別の接続器37は、外部印刷装置、外部表示装置、モ
デム、またはレーザ・スロット・スキャナのような周辺
装置（図示されていない）に接続される多線ケーブルを
取り付けるのに用いることができる。
上側壁33から外側に、アンテナ39が突き出している。
このアンテナ39は、遠隔のホスト・コンピュータにデー
タを送信するのに、または遠隔のホスト・コンピュータ
からのデータを受信するのに用いられる。このアンテナ
および収納器13の中に配置されたそれに付随する無線モ
ジュール41により、接続器36およびそれに付随するケー
ブルに代わる便利な装置が得られる。いくつかの応用に
おいては、この接続器は全て省略することもできる。
遠隔のバー・コード走査器にデータを送信するのに用
いられる、または遠隔のバー・コード走査器からのデー
タを受信するのに用いられるまた別のアンテナが、収納
器13の中に取り付けられたプリント回路基板（図示され
ていない）に配置される。このことにより、接続器35お
よびそれに付随するケーブルに代わる便利な装置が得ら
れる。
販売端末装置11は、遠隔のバー・コード走査器および
ホスト・コンピュータと、独立におよび同時に、通信で
きるように構成されることが好ましい。このことは、２
つのデータ・リンクに対し分離しかつ両立性のある変調
方式を用いて、無線モジュール41を構成することにより
達成される。端末装置とホスト・コンピュータとの間の
通信が拡散スペクトル変調方式で行われ、一方、端末装
置とバー・コード走査器との間の通信が狭帯域変調方式
で行われることが好ましく、その際、この狭帯域変調方
式における搬送波周波数40は、他のデータ・リンクに対
する拡散スペクトル信号の周波数スペクトルの零点に整
合するように選定されることが好ましい。このことが第
８図に示されている。拡散スペクトル・リンクの電力の
大きさは、過剰な妨害を起こすことなく、狭帯域リンク
の電力の大きさよりも２桁大きくすることができる。
第８図に示された２つの変調方式に代わる方式とし
て、両方のデータ・リンクは拡散スペクトル方式でデー
タを変調することができる。この場合には、異なる搬送
波周波数を用いることと、変調を実施する際に異なる擬
似ランダム・コード・シーケンスとを用いることによ
り、２つの変調信号の間の干渉を避けらことができる。
なおさらに別の方式では、両方のデータ・リンクは、異
なる周波数チヤンネルにおける狭帯域変調を用いること
ができる。
再び第１図において、端末装置11の正面板15は、３個
の膜スイッチをさらに有する。この３個の膜スイッチ
は、この端末装置をオンおよびオフにするスイッチと、
LCD19のコントラストを制御するスイッチと、LCDの背景
光を制御するスイッチとである。正面板はまた、LED指
示器43を有する。これらのLED指示器は、充電、外部電
力、低レベル電池、および動作状態のような端末装置の
状態を指示する。
LCD19、印刷装置27、サイン受取りスクリーン組立体2
5、および無線モジュール41のような端末装置１の種々
の電気部品は、電池パック体44から電力の供給を受け
る。電池パック体44は、凹部45の中に収納されている。
電池パック体44は、収納器13の下側に取り付けられた回
転可能な扉47により、出し入れすることができる。電池
パック体44は、充電可能な電池であることが好ましい。
端末装置はさらに、従来の充電回路（図示されていな
い）と、収納器の上側壁33に配置された充電用接続器49
とを有する。
特別の販売店では、多くのユーザは異なるキーボード
機能、異なるキーボード配置、および異なるキー寸法を
要求することがある。本発明の端末装置11は、ただ１つ
のキーボード組立体でこれらすべてのユーザの要請に応
えるよりはむしろ、複数個のキーボード組立体を使用す
る。これらのキーボード組立体のおのおのは、それ自身
の固有の機能、配置、およびキー寸法を有している。
第４図〜第７図に示されているように、キーボード組
立体17は、収納器13の平らな正面板15の中に作成された
浅い凹部51に入っている。このキーボード組立体は、機
械的強度を得るための平らな支持基板53と、この支持基
板に接着剤により接着された膜スイッチ組立体55と、こ
のスイッチ組立体の上の弾性キーパッド57と、このキー
パッドの上のプラスチックの斜面溝59とを有する。図面
に示されたキーパッドは、実際、20個の機能キーを備え
た左部分57aと、１組の標準的数字キーを備えた中央部
分57bと、第１部分57aと同様の20個の機能キーを備えた
右部分57cとの、３個の部分を並んで有する。このモジ
ュール方式は、１個の大きなキーパッドよりは、低いコ
ストでキーパッドの各部分を変更することができる。
第５図に示されているように、斜面溝59は支持基板53
の中にカチッと入る。その後、この組立体17の全体が、
４個のねじ61を用いて固定され、１つの装置として保持
される。それにより、この携帯用装置が通常受ける程度
の衝撃に耐える堅牢性が得られる。
斜面溝59は、水平方向および垂直方向の横木を有す
る、これらの横木は、キーパッド57の個々のキーと整合
した複数個の開口部を定める。任意に選定されたキーを
手動で押すことにより、膜スイッチ組立体の中の２個の
離れていた接触体が相互に接触し、それにより予め定め
られた回路が閉じる。リボン接続器63は、この膜スイッ
チ組立体と、収納器13の中に配置されたプリント回路基
板65の上に配置された付随する電子回路とを接続する。
斜面溝59から外側に突き出した２個のタブ67aおよび6
7bを、収納器の中に作成された整合した開口部の中に挿
入することにより、キーボード組立体17が収納器13の正
面板15に取り付けられる。その後、キーボード凹部51を
定めている棚部69の上にこの組立体が配置され、そして
３個のネジ71により、所定の位置に固定される。これら
のネジは、電池用凹部45を通して操作することができ
る。これらのネジは、支持基板53の下側に作成されたネ
ジ穴に取り付けられる。これらのネジを緩めることによ
り、キーボード組立体を凹部から上に回転することがで
き、それにより端末装置11から取り外すことができる。
キーボード組立体17をこの方式で収納器13に取り付け
ることにより、電池が電池用凹部45から取り出された時
にのみ、キーボード組立体17を取り付けているネジ71を
操作できるということが保証される。このことにより、
端末装置11が電力の供給を受けている時にキーボード組
立体を取り外すことが防止され、そして、不注意によっ
てもたらされる可能性のある、電気部品が露出すること
による電気的危険性を最小限にすることができる。
容易に交換することができるキーボード組立体17を備
えることにより、費用のかかる端末装置11の再設計を行
う必要がなく、弾性キーボード以外のキーボード技術
を、端末装置11に対して用いることができる。このよう
な他のキーボード技術の例としては、抵抗性タッチ・パ
ネル、膜マトリックス、完全トラベル・クワティ（QWER
TY）、静電容量パネル、および電磁気パネルがある。
好ましくない電磁気的妨害（EMI）を生ずる放射線か
ら保護するために、収納器13およびキーボード支持基板
53の下側は、金属遮蔽体でメッキされる。膜スイッチ55
の上側面および斜面溝59の下側の取付け用突起部もま
た、金属遮蔽体でメッキされる。膜スイッチの上のメッ
キされた遮蔽体によってもまた、ESD放電のための低イ
ンピーダンス路が得られる。このために、放射線を出す
キーボード論理信号は遮蔽体により完全に取り囲まれ、
そしてESDから保護され、一方、EMI放射は大幅に小さく
なる。
前記で説明したように、そして再び第１図において、
印刷装置27は、サイン受取りスクリーン組立体25のすぐ
上の経路に沿って、紙テープ29を送り出す。この紙の両
側の端部の上にある収納器の正面板部分により、この紙
がスクリーン組立体に対して平坦に保持される。この構
成体により、顧客は自分の名前をこの紙ストリップ体に
直接にサインすることができ、一方、同時にスクリーン
はこのサインの書き込みを検出し、そして対応するディ
ジタル信号を発生する。このスクリーン組立体は、その
上に書き込まれた情報を表す一連の10ビット・ワードを
発生する従来の装置である。
サイン受取りスクリーン組立体25の上に細長い紙29を
配置することにより、２つの重要な利点が得られる。第
１の利点は、購入品に対する領収書を書面で顧客が入手
できることであり、そして第２の利点は、ペンとスクリ
ーンとの間に紙が介在するので、ペンで加えられた圧力
が分散し、それにより、スクリーンに損傷を与える潜在
的危険が非常に小さくなる。
第６図において、非揮発性フラッシュROMまたはRAMメ
モリ回路を備えたプリント回路基板75aおよび75bを受け
入れるための２個の溝が示されている。プリント回路基
板が取り付けられた時、バネで押さえられた取出しレバ
ー75が、これらの回路基板を所定の位置に確保する。こ
れらの回路基板の備えられたメモリを用いて、順次の顧
客に対するデータを記憶することができ、したがって、
順次の紙テープ領収書に機能的に等価である電子仕訳帳
が得られる。与えられた時間間隔の後、例えば１週間の
後、メモリ基板を取出し、そして記憶されているデータ
をホスト・コンピュータに転送し、そこでさらに処理が
行なわれる。これは、無線モジュール41およびアンテナ
39による、または接続器36およびそれに付随するケーブ
ルによる、このようなデータのリアル・タイム伝送に代
わるもの、すなわちバックアップである。
本発明により、従来の販売端末装置の機能のすべてを
備えており、かつ現場で完全に携帯可能である、改良さ
れた販売端末装置の得られることが、前記説明から分か
るはずである。それぞれの顧客に関するデータを、キー
ボード組立体、タッチ・スクリーン表示装置、またはサ
イン受取りスクリーン組立体により、または付随するバ
ー・コード走査器からの無線リンクおよびアンテナによ
り、端末装置に入力することができる。また無線リンク
およびアンテナにより、任意の時刻に遠隔のホスト・コ
ンピュータにデータを通信することができる。ホスト・
コンピュータとのリンクのための拡散スペクトル方式、
およびバー・コード走査器とのリンクのための狭帯域ス
ペクトル方式または拡散スペクトル方式のような、相互
に両立し得る変調方式を用いて、ホスト・コンピュータ
およびバー・コード走査器との通信リンクは、独立にお
よび同時に動作する。
好ましい実施例についてだけ本発明が詳細に説明され
たけれども、本発明の範囲内において種々の変更を行う
ことが可能であることは、当業者には直ちに理解される
であろう。したがって、本発明は下記の請求項によって
のみ定められる。

  1. 【請求項１】正面板を備えた携帯可能な収納器と、 前記収納器の前記正面板の上に取り付けられたキーボー
    ドおよび表示装置と、 その上に手動で書き込まれた情報を感知するためにおよ
    び対応するデータを生ずるために、前記収納器の前記正

    たデータを前記第２電磁気送受信機が送受信する、 前記携帯可能な販売端末装置。
  3. 【請求項３】請求項１に記載の携帯可能な販売端末装置
    において、前記第１電磁気送受信機および前記第２電磁
    気送受信機が同時に動作し、各々が、相互に妨害しない
    電磁気周波数でデータを送受信する、前記携帯可能な販
    売端末装置。
  4. 【請求項４】請求項３に記載の携帯可能な販売端末装置
    において、前記第１電磁気送受信機および前記第２電磁
    気送受信機の一方または両方が拡散スペクトル方式でデ
    ータを送受信する、前記携帯可能な販売端末装置。
  5. 【請求項５】請求項１に記載の携帯可能な販売端末装置
    において、 前記収納器がその正面板の中に凹部を有し、かつ 前記販売端末装置が複数個のキーボードをさらに有し、
    かつ前記キーボードの各々が前記収納器の前記凹部の中
    に個別に取り外し可能に受け入れられる寸法を有する、 前記携帯可能な販売端末装置。
  6. 【請求項６】請求項５記載の携帯可能な販売端末装置に
    おいて、 前記電源が１個または複数個の取り外し可能な電池を有
    し、かつ 複数個の前記キーボードの各々が、１個または複数個の
    前記電池が前記収納器から取り去られた場合にのみ、前
    記収納器の前記凹部の中に取り付けることができおよび
    前記収納器の前記凹部の中から取り外すことができる、 前記携帯可能な販売端末装置。
  7. 【請求項７】請求項１記載の携帯可能な販売端末装置に
    おいて、 細長い紙の上に情報を印刷するためにおよび前記収納器
    から前記紙を送り出すために、前記収納器の中に配置さ
    れた印刷装置と、 手動でその上に書き込まれた情報を感知するためにおよ
    び対応するデータを発生するために、前記収納器の前記
    正面板の上に取り付けられたスクリーンと、 をさらに有する前記携帯可能な販売端末装置。
  8. 【請求項８】請求項７記載の携帯可能な販売端末装置に
    おいて、前記印刷装置が前記スクリーンの近くに配置さ
    れ、および送り出される前記紙が前記スクリーンの上に
    かぶさるように前記印刷装置が構成される、前記携帯可
    能な販売端末装置。
  9. 【請求項９】請求項１記載の携帯可能な販売端末装置に
    おいて、前記端末装置のオペレータによる情報の手動選
    択を感知するのに前記表示装置が適合している前記携帯
    可能な販売端末装置。
  10. 【請求項１０】請求項１記載の携帯可能な販売端末装置
    において、 前記収納器の前記正面板の中に、クレッジト・カードの
    １つの端部を受け入れることができる寸法を有する溝を
    定める手段と、 前記溝に沿って滑動するクレッジト・カードの磁気スト
    リップに記憶されたデータを読み取るために、前記収納
    器の中に配置された磁気読取り装置と、 をさらに有する前記携帯可能な販売端末装置。
  11. 【請求項１１】その中に作成された凹部を備えた正面板
    を有する携帯可能な収納器と、 前記収納器の前記正面板の上に取り付けられた表示装置
    と、 その上に手動で書き込まれた情報を感知するためにおよ
    び対応するデータを生ずるために、前記収納器の前記正
    面板の上に取り付けられたスクリーンと、 前記収納器の前記正面板の前記凹部の中に個別に取り外
    し可能に受け入れられる寸法を各々が有する、複数個の
    キーボードと、 前記収納器の中に配置された電源と、 遠隔の装置におよび遠隔の装置から無線でデータを送信
    および受信するために、前記収納器の中に配置された第
    １の電磁気送受信器と、 ホスト・コンピュータおよびホスト・コンピュータから
    データを無線で送信および受信するために前記収納器の
    中に配置された第２の電磁気送受信機と、 を有する携帯可能な販売端末装置。
  12. 【請求項１２】請求項11記載の携帯可能な販売端末装置
    において、 前記電源が１個または複数個の取り外し可能な電池を有
    し、かつ 複数個の前記キーボードの各々が、１個または複数個の
    前記電池が前記収納器から取り外された場合にのみ、前
    記収納器の前記凹部の中に取り付けることができおよび
    前記収納器の前記凹部の中から取り外すことができる、 前記携帯可能な販売端末装置。
  13. 【請求項１３】請求項１記載の携帯可能な販売端末装置
    において、 前記収納器の前記正面板がプラスチックのクレジット・
    コードの１つの端部を受け入れることができる寸法を備
    えた溝を定める手段を有し、かつ 前記溝に沿って滑動するプラスチックのクレジット・カ
    ードの磁気ストリップに記憶された情報を読み取るため
    に、前記販売端末装置が前記収納器の前記正面板の前記
    溝に隣接して配置された磁気カード読取り装置をさらに
    有する、 前記携帯可能な販売端末装置。
  14. 【請求項１４】正面板を備えた携帯可能な収納器と、 前記収納器の中に配置された電源と、 前記収納器の前記正面板の上に取り付けられたキーボー
    ドおよび表示装置と、 その上に手動で書き込まれた情報を感知するためにおよ
    び対応するデータを生ずるために、前記収納器の前記正
    面板の上に取り付けられたスクリーンと、 細長い紙の上に情報を印刷するためにおよび印刷された
    前記紙を前記収納器から送り出すために、前記収納器の
    中に配置された印刷装置と、 を有し、かつ 前記印刷装置が前記スクリーンに隣接して配置され、お
    よび送り出される前記紙が前記スクリーンの上にかぶさ
    るように前記印刷装置が構成される、 携帯可能な販売端末装置。
  15. 【請求項１５】請求項14記載の携帯可能な販売端末装置
    において、 前記収納器の前記正面板がプラスチックのクレジット・
    カードの１つの端部を受け入れることができる寸法を備
    えた溝を定める手段を有し、かつ 前記溝に沿って滑動するプラスチックのクレジット・カ
    ードの磁気ストリップに記憶された情報を読み取るため
    に、前記販売端末装置が前記収納器の前記正面板の前記
    溝に隣接して配置された磁気カード読取り装置をさらに
    有する、 前記携帯可能な販売端末装置。
