【発明の詳細な説明】 例示図面 本発明は、本発明によるプログラムガイドディスプレ
イの一例を示している図を含む。この特許明細書の開示
の一部は、著作権保護の対象になるマテリアルを含む。
著作権者は、それが米国特許商標局の特許ファイルまた
は記録に表されているような、特許明細書または特許開
示の、何人によるファックス再生に異議はないが、それ
以外にはいかなることに関しても全ての著作権権利を保

関連出願報告 本出願は、1995年11月10日に出願された、米国特許出
願第08/556,624号の一部継続出願である。
発明の背景 本発明は、テレビプログラムガイド情報の電子プレゼ
ンテーションに関し、特に、自動プログラムガイド情報
を表示するために利用可能な画面領域の最適使用を行う
方法及び装置に関する。
テレビが始まって以来、利用可能なチャネルの数は、
絶え間なく増加した。放送使用のためのUHF帯域の開
設、ケーブルテレビ産業基盤の開発、及び容易に利用可
能な直接衛星受信の導入は、利用可能なプログラムの数
の増加を全てもたらした。
テレビチャネルの急増は、それと共に多種多様なプロ
グラミングをもたらすがまたどのプラグラミングが特定
の時間に利用可能でありかつどのチャネルでそれが利用
可能であるかを習得することにおける視聴者のタスクも
複雑化する。最も一般的なアプローチは、独立した出版
物としてまたは地方新聞の付録として利用可能である。
新聞テレビプログラミングガイドである。図１は、プロ
グラミングの一晩のテレビプログラミングガイドの一般
的な新聞プレゼンテーションを示す。印刷された表は、
それぞれが30分スロットに対応している複数の列と、そ
れぞれが異なるテレビチャネルに対応している複数の行
とを有する。各表エントリは、識別された時間スロット
中に識別されたチャネル上に表れるテレビプログラムを
識別する。
しかしながら、テレビプログラミング情報の新聞プレ
ゼンテーションは、多くの欠点を有する。スケジュール
が変更されて、視聴者への通知なしでガイドが陳腐化さ
れる。利用可能なチャネルは、視聴者と特定なケーブル
システムまたは衛星リンク及び視聴者のサービスレベル
により変化しうる。更に、視聴者がある一定のプログラ
ムにだけ興味を持っていても、視聴者は、それにもかか
わらず、興味のあるプログラムに対してケーブル全体を
通して検索しなければならない。また、新聞プログラム
ガイドは、それが失われたかまたは要求されなかったの
で、視聴者に利用可能でないかもしれない。
これらの欠点の少なくともあるものに対処するため
に、電子プログラムガイドが提案され、開発され、かつ
実現された。複数のそのようなガイドは、図１のグリッ
ドを直接採用している。そのようなガイドの例を図２に
示す。テレビ画面の解像度制限、及び視聴距離により、
視聴者は、おおよそ７チャネルに対して一度にプログラ
ミングの1.5時間だけを見ることができる。
電子プログラムガイドに対する別のアプローチは、視
聴者をカテゴリーの画面の長くかつ扱い難い階層構造を
通すことである。各画面で視聴者は、カテゴリーを選択
させられる。そして、視聴者は、プログラムの順次リス
トを示される。
必要とされるものは、通常のテレビ画面で用いられ、
一覧で必要なスケジュール情報を表示し、かつ直観的に
動作するプログラム情報を表示するシステムである。
発明の要約 本発明は、２つの解像度レベルにおいて、テーブルの
形でプログラムガイド情報を表わす直感的に操作する電
子プログラムガイド（EPG）を提供する。スケジュール
情報は、長時間ウィンドー上にアイコンの形で表わさ
れ、本文情報は、視聴者が選択するタイムスロットで表
わされる。選択したタイムスロットは、長時間ウィンド
ービューの拡大した表示であるかもしれない。このよう
に、従来の解像度のテレビのスクリーンは、８つのチャ
ンネルの少なくとも５時間のスケジュール情報を表わす
かもしれない。視聴者は、本発明の電子プログラムガイ
ド（EPG）を、簡単な遠隔制御コマンドで直感的に操作
できる。
本発明の第１の態様では、テレビのスクリーンにプロ
グラムガイド情報を表示する装置は、スクリーン上にプ
ログラム情報のテーブルを表示する手段を含む。テーブ
ルの第１軸は放送の時間を表わし、テーブルの第２軸は
チャンネルを表わす。テーブルの項目は、項目の位置に
より表わされる時間にそのチャンネルで放送されるプロ
グラムの分類を表わすアイコンを含む。この装置はさら
に、特に興味のある放送時間を特定する使用者の入力を
受ける手段、及び特に興味のある放送時間に対応するテ
ーブルの部分で、複数の拡大したテキスト項目を重ねる
手段を含む。個々のテキスト項目は、テキスト項目の位
置で表わされるチャンネルで特に興味のある放送時間に
放送されるプログラムを表わすテキストを含む。
本発明は、添付図面と次の詳細な説明を参照してより
よく理解できる。

図3Aは、本発明を実施するのに適した、セットトップ
ユニット／テレビジョンの組合せ体を示している。セッ
トトップユニット302は、放送媒体（図示せず）とテレ
ビジョン302の放送信号入力とに接続されている。セッ
トトップユニット302は、受信されるべき特定のチャン
ネルを選択するように動作し、テレビジョン306を通る
そのチャンネルのプログラミングを表示するように動作
する。セットトップユニット302は、リモートコントロ
ールユニットからのリモートコントロール信号を受取る
ため、IR（赤外線）レシーバ308を有するのが好まし
い。従って、視聴者は、リモートコントロールを介して
セットトップユニット302に指令することによって、あ
るいはセットトップユニット302上のコントロール部
（図示せず）を操作することによって、受信すべき特定
のチャンネルを選択できる。セットトップユニット302
は、テレビジョン306のスクリーンに示すために自身の
ディスプレイを生成するのを可能にする回路を組み込ん
でいる。
勿論、セットトップユニットは、本発明の実施を可能
にするための、ほんの１つの装置でしかない。例えば、
本発明の電子的プログラムガイド生成システムの全部又
は一部が、テレビジョン306の中に配置されてもよい
し、セットトップユニット302に接続された対話式テレ
ビジョンネットワークの中に配置されてもよい。セット
トップユニット302は、ビデオプログラムのように複数
の情報のストリームを支持する媒体にディスプレイター
ミナルを接続するターミナルアダプターの１つのタイプ
として理解され得る。従って、ネットワークとモニター
に接続されたコンピュータは、本発明を実施するのに使
用することができる。
図3Bは、本発明の好ましい実施例に従って使用するの
に適した例示用のリモートコントロールユニット310を
示している。リモートコントロールユニット310は、数
学キーパッド312と、ボリュームコントロール314と、チ
ャンネルコントロール316と、垂直のカーソル矢印キー3
17Aと、水平のカーソル矢印キー317Bと、オン／オフス
イッチ318と、TVボタン320と、ガイドボタン322と、選
択ボタン324と、オプションのボタン326とを有する。オ
ン／オフスイッチ318は、セットトップユニットをオン
又はオフするのに用いられる。数字キーパッド312及び
／又はチャンネルコントロール316は、チャンネルの選
択のために用いられる。ボリュームコントロール314
は、ボリュームすなわち音量を調整するのに用いられ
る。TVボタン320とガイドボタン322と選択ボタン324と
オプションボタン326との動作は、後の記述を参照して
説明する。
図3Cは、セットトップユニット302の内部回路の動作
の簡単な機能図を示している。セットトップユニット30
2は、チューナ／デコーダ328と、コントロールユニット
330と、リモートコントロールレシーバ332と、プログラ
ムガイド情報抽出ユニット334と、プログラムガイドデ
ィスプレイ生成ユニット336と、プレゼンテーションユ
ニット338とを有する。リモートコントロールレシーバ3
32は、IRレシーバ308に接続され、受信したIR信号を、
コントロールユニット330への入力となる電気的なコマ
ンド信号に変換する。コントロールユニット330は、マ
イクロプロセッサ又はマイクロコントローラを組み込ん
でいるのが好ましい。コントロールユニット330の１つ
の機能は、チャンネル選択コントロール信号をチューナ
／デコーダ328に生成することである。チューナ／デコ
ーダ328は、ビデオ信号のような外部情報信号を受信し
て、チャンネル選択コントロール信号に従って所望のチ
ャンネルを分離する。
プログラムガイド抽出ユニット334は、受信した信号
から、プログラムガイド情報を分離する。１つの実施例
においては、この情報は、現在選択されているチャンネ
ルのブランキング期間から抽出される。勿論、別の方法
もあって、プログラムガイド情報がディスプレイへのビ
デオ情報によってマルチプレクスされてもよい。代替実
施例において、チューナ／デコーダ328は、プログラム
ガイド情報だけを送信する、特殊なプログラムガイド情
報チャンネルにシフトされてもよい。
コントロールユニット330は、電子的プログラムディ
スプレイを生成するようにプログラムガイドディスプレ
イ生成ユニット336を指示しており、プログラムガイド
抽出ユニット334によって有効になったプログラムガイ
ド情報とリモートコントロールレシーバ332を経由して
受信したユーザコマンドとに応答するのを促している。
プレゼンテーションユニット338は、ディスプレイ生成
ユニット336によって生成されたプログラムガイドディ
スプレイをチューナ／デコーダ328から受信したビデオ
信号に結合し、ディスプレイのためのビデオ信号を生成
している。一定のプロンプトとディスプレイとは、選択
したチャンネルのビデオのプログラミング上に重畳され
る。他のディスプレイは、スクリーン全体を占めるよう
にすることができ、選択したチャンネルについて全体的
に置換する。
セットトップユニット302の内部設計の詳細は、この
分野の通常の知識を有するものには明らかであり、ここ
で更に説明しない。セットトップユニット302の機能を
実現するために、ハードウェアまたはソフトウェアのあ
らゆる組み合わせを用いることができる。
本発明によると、プログラミングのいろいろなカテゴ
リーがカテゴリーアイコンに割り当てられる。１つの実
施形態において、これらのアイコンはプログラミングカ
テゴリーを表すシンポルである。例えば、映画は映画の
カメラアイコンによって表され、音楽プログラムは楽譜
アイコンによって表される。他の実施形態において、こ
れらのアイコンはピクセルのブロックであるか、あるい
はプログラミングカテゴリーを表すカラーを有する平ら
な個々のピクセルである。例えば、ブルーはニュースの
プログラミングを表し、紫は映画を表す。
図４は、視聴者がテレビジョン306で通常のテレビジ
ョンプログラミングを見ている間に、リモートコントロ
ールユニット310のガイドボタン322を押すと、セットト
ップユニット302によって発生されたオーバレイドディ
スプレイ402を示す。オーバレイドディスプレイ402は、
現在のチャネルでのステーションID404、カテゴリーア
イコン406および現在のプログラムの名前、およびアイ
コン410と現在のチャネルの次のプログラムの名前を有
する。オーバレイドディスプレイ402は、更にガイド、
選択およびオプションボタンのイメージ414を示し、こ
れらのボタンの特別の機能が今可能化されていることを
視聴者に気づかせる。
TVボタン320を押すと、ガイド情報の表示を終了す
る。チャネルコントロールボタン312または数字のキー
バッド316を操作することは、他のチャネルについての
同じ情報を示す。選択ボタン324を押すことによって、
ステップトップユニット302は情報が表示されるべきチ
ャネルに同調する。オプションボタン326を押すこと
は、視聴者が好みをセットすることを可能にする他のデ
ィスプレイ（図示せず）を発生する。ガイドボタンを再
び押すと、本発明による全電子プログラムガイドディス
プレイをする。
図５は本発明の１つの実施形態によるセットトップユ
ニット302によって発生された電子プログラムガイドデ
ィスプレイ500を示す。ディスプレイ500はテーブル502
を有し、このテーブルの行501は利用可能なチャネルを
表し、列503は30分の時間スロットを示す。各テーブル
の項目はテレビジョンプログラムングのカテゴリーを表
すアイコンである。ディスプレイ500は、また選択、オ
プションおよびTVボタンの表示を含む。
本発明の可能な実現性を示すため、図５はアイコンの
異なる２つの型を示す。アイコン504のような幾つかの
アイコンはプログラミングの特定のカテゴリーを表す単
純化したカラー化したブロックである。他のアイコンも
カラー化したアブロックであるが、プログラミングのカ
テゴリーを表すシンボルを重畳した。アイコン506、即
ち映画のカメラは映画を表す。アイコン508、即ち楽譜
の対は音楽のプログラミングを表す。好ましくは、異な
るアイコンは、ディジタルビデオ放送基準によって与え
られたプログラミングのカテゴリーの各々に対して与え
られる。
アイコンは小さいので、プログラミングの長い時間フ
レームをテレビジョン306のスクリーン上に表示しても
よい。重畳されたシンボル以外の排他的にカラー化され
たブロックを頼りにする実現性は、ブロックサイズを最
小の可視サイズに縮めることによって非常に長いタイム
フレームを収容する。
他の多くのアイコンスタイルは本発明の範囲内で可能
である。例えば、図５は各30分スロットに対する個々の
アイコンを示すけれども、各プログラムに対する単一の
アイコンを用いることもできる。これらのアイコンはプ
ログラムのカテゴリーを表す色を有するプログラムに対
するフルタイムのスロットを占有するカラー化された矩
形である。始めのタイムスロットを占有する矩形の区画
（セクション）がプログラムのカテゴリーを表す形状を
有することもできる。
オーバーレイドオーバーテーブル502は、特定の半タ
イムスロット内のプログラム放送に関するより詳細情報
を載せた拡大テーブル510である。拡大テーブル510は、
テーブル502に整合しているが、テーブル502の単一のコ
ラムよりは広い。拡大テーブル510のそれぞれの目は、
そのときに表示されているプログラミングのタイトルを
含む。水平カーソル矢印キー317Bを操作することによっ
て、視聴者は、テーブル502に沿って拡大テーブル510を
シフトすることができ、他のタイムスロットのプログラ
ミング放送のタイトルを表示することができる。表示さ
れたタイムスロットを超えて拡大テーブル510をさらに
シフトすると、表示されたタイムスロットの範囲の変更
が必要となる。拡大テーブル510によって、テーブル502
上でシフトする拡大レンズとして理解することができ
る。１つの実施例では、個々のチャンネルのタイトル
は、テーブル502の端部ではなく、拡大テーブル510の端
部に現れる。
第２ディスプレイ510の１つの目512は、ハイライトさ
れた境界を有する。垂直カーソル矢印キー317Aを操作す
ることによって、視聴者は、どの目をハイライトするか
を選択することができる。表示されているチャンネルを
超えてカーソル矢印キー317Aをさらにシフトすると、表
示されているチャンネルの範囲を変更する必要が生じ
る。セレクトボタン324を押すと、図６の示すようにハ
イライトされたプログラムについてのさらなる情報が現
れることになる。
図６は、ハイライトされたプログラムについてのさら
なる情報を有する他のオーバーレイドディスプレイ602
を有する図５のディスプレイを示す。セレクトボタン32
4を再び押すと、その選択されたプログラムにセットト
ップユニット302が合わせられる。EPGディスプレイ中の
任意のポイントにオイテ、オプションボタン326を押す
ことによって、好みのものを選択し、表示されている日
にちを変更するための新たなディスプレイが現れる。た
とえば、視聴者は、プログラミングのための一定のカテ
ゴリーに対してのみスケジュール情報を見ることを選択
することができる。EPG表示中の任意のポイントにおい
て、TVボタン320に押すと、そのEPG表示に先行するプロ
グラミングに戻る。
上記は、リモートコントロールユニットを使用するこ
とを参照して、EPG表示操作を説明したが、任意のコン
トロール操作がその表示を操作するのに使用することが
できる。たとえば、任意のポインティングデバイス、マ
ウス、トラックボール、あるいはジョイスティックをカ
ーソル矢印キーに容易に代用することができる。リモー
トコントロールユニット306上のボタンで与えられる他
の機能は、プルダウンメニューあるいは表示されたバー
チャルボタンで与えることができる。
上記は、本発明の好ましい実施例の完全な記述である
が、さまざまな変更、修正および均等物を用いることが
できる。本発明は、上記の実施例に適当な修正を加える
ことによって等しく適用することができることは明白で
ある。したがって、上記は、添付の特許請求の範囲の記
載の境界によって画定される本発明の範囲を限定するも

    (57)【特許請求の範囲】
  1. 【請求項１】スクリーン上にプログラムガイド情報を表
    示する装置であって、 前記スクリーン上にプログラム情報のテーブルを表示す
    る手段と、 放送時間を表す前記テーブルの第一軸と、チャンネルを
    表す前記テーブルの第二軸とを備え、 前記テーブルの項目が、前記項目の位置によって表され
    る時間におけるチャンネル上に放送されるべきプログラ
    ムの分類を表すアイコンを含んでおり、 さらに、特定の興味のある放送時間を特定する使用者の
    入力を受ける手段と、 前記興味のある放送時間に対応する前記テーブルの区分
    の上に、複数の拡大されたテキスト項目を重ねる手段と
    を備えており、 各テキスト項目が前記テキスト項目の位置によって表さ
    れるチャンネル上に特定の興味のある放送時間に放送さ
    れるべきプログラムを表すテキストを含んでいることを
    特徴とする装置。

    の分類を表す形状を含んでいることを特徴とする請求項

    あって、 スクリーン上にプログラム情報のテーブルを表示するよ
    うになっており、 前記テーブルの第一軸が放送時間を表し、前記テーブル
    の第二軸がチャンネルを表しており、 前記テーブルの項目が、前記項目の位置によって表され
    る時間におけるチャンネル上に放送されるべきプログラ
    ムを分類を表すアイコンを含んでおり、 特定の興味の放送時間を特定する使用者の入力をうけ、 そして、 前記特定の興味の放送時間に対応する前記テーブルのの
    上に、複数の拡大されたテキスト項目を重ねる工程を有
    し、 各テキスト項目が前記テキスト項目の位置によって表さ
    れるチャンネル上に特定の興味のある放送時間に放送さ
    れるべきプログラムを表すテキストを含んでいることを
    特徴とする方法。

    ムの分類を表す形を含んでいることを特徴とする請求項

    に、ディスプレイに接続されるターミナルアダプターで
    あって、 スクリーン上にプログラム情報のテーブルを表示するよ
    うになっており、 前記テーブルの第一軸が放送時間を表し、前記テーブル
    の第二軸がチャンネルを表しており、 前記テーブルの項目が、前記目の位置によって表される
    時間におけるチャンネル上に放送されるべきプログラム
    の分類を表すアイコンを含んでおり、 特定の興味の放送時間を特定する使用者の入力をうけ、 そして、 前記特定の興味の放送時間に対応する前記テーブルの区
    分の上に、複数の拡大されたテキスト項目を重ねる工程
    を有し、 各テキスト項目が前記テキスト項目の位置によって表さ
    れるチャンネル上に特定の興味のある放送時間に放送さ
    れるべきプログラムを表すテキストを含んでいることを
    特徴とする、 ターミナルアダプター。
