Abstract

A light-duty liquid or gel dishwashing detergent composition containing an alkyl ethoxy carboxylate surfactant and little or no alcohol ethoxylate and soap by-product contaminants. The compositions exhibit good grease removal while manifesting mildness to the skin. A preferred type of dishwashing detergent composition is in the liquid form. High pH and magnesium ion containing versions of the compositions increase grease removal properties while maintaining mildness.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION There is considerable demand for light duty liquid or gel dishwashing detergents that can provide good degreasing. These compositions are well known in the art and are described, for example, in U.S. Patent Nos. 4,316,824, 4,681,704, 4,133,799, and 4,615,819. Although these compositions are good grease and soil cleaners, they can cause rough skin under certain conditions, especially when used in dry winter months.

Similarly, the technology is well-equipped with detergent compositions that are mild to the skin. These mild compositions often contain sulfates of highly ethoxylated alcohols. See, for example, U.S. Pat. No. 3,743,233. Betaine has also been suggested for use in improving the mildness of liquid dishwashing compositions. See, for example, U.S. Pat. No. 4,555,360. Alkyl ethoxycarboxylates are also known as mild surfactants for use in liquid detergent compositions. See Japanese Patent Application Nos. 48-60706 and 48-64102. However, it is stated that these alkyl ethoxy carboxylate surfactants are poor in grease cutting capacity and require the use of other surfactants to achieve the desired cleaning.

These two important features, mildness and grease cutting ability, are rarely embodied in one product. It is generally assumed that one must sacrifice the other's interests. It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a detergent composition which exhibits good grease removal while showing mildness on the skin.

Suitable alcohol precursors for the alkylethoxycarboxylates of the present invention are primary aliphatic alcohols having about 12 to about 16 carbon atoms. Other suitable primary fatty alcohols are obtained by hydrogenation of vegetable or animal fatty acids, such as coconut, palm kernel and tallow fatty acids, or by ethylene enrichment and subsequent hydrolysis as in a Ziegler-type process. Linear primary alcohol. Preferred alcohols are n-octyl, n-nonyl, n-decyl, n-undecyl, n-dodecyl, n
-Tridecyl, n-tetradecyl, n-pentadecyl,
And n-hexadecyl alcohol. Other suitable alcohol precursors include primary alcohols having a predetermined proportion of branches on the β or 2-carbon atoms (the alkyl branch having 1 to 4 carbon atoms).
In such alcohols, at least 30% of each particular chain length alcohol is desirably linear and the branches preferably consist of about 50% methyl groups, with small amounts of ethyl, propyl and butyl groups. There is. These alcohols are conveniently formed by the reaction of linear alcohols having about 11 to 17 carbon atoms with carbon monoxide and hydrogen. Both linear and branched alcohols are formed by these methods and the mixture can be used as is or can be separated into individual components and then recombined to give the desired blend.

Equivalent secondary alcohols can also be used. It will be apparent that the use of a single chain olefin as a starting material will result in the corresponding single chain alcohol, but a mixture of olefins having a carbon chain length spread around the desired average is obtained. Utilization is generally more economical. Of course, this will give a mixture of alcohols with the same distribution of chain lengths around the average.

The desired average ethoxy chain length on the alcohol ethoxylate can be obtained by using a catalyzed ethoxylation process. In this ethoxylation process, the molar amount of ethylene oxide reacted with each equivalent of fatty alcohol will correspond to the average number of ethoxy groups on the alcohol being ethoxylated. It is known that the addition of ethylene oxide to alkanols is facilitated by a catalyst, most usually either strong acid or strong base. Suitable basic catalysts are basic salts of alkali metals of Group I of the Periodic Table, such as sodium, potassium, rubidium and cesium, and some of the alkaline earth metals of Group II of the Periodic Table, such as , Calcium, strontium, barium, and in some cases, magnesium. Suitable acidic catalysts broadly include Lewis acids of the Friedel-Crafts catalyst. Particular examples of these catalysts are the fluorides, chlorides and bromides of boron, antimony, tungsten, iron, nickel, zinc, tin, aluminum, titanium, molybdenum. The use of complexes of such halides with, for example, alcohols, ethers, carboxylic acids, and amines has also been reported. Still other examples of known acidic alkoxylation catalysts are sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid; perchloric acid and perchlorates of magnesium, calcium, manganese, nickel and zinc; oxalates, sulfates, phosphoric acids of metals Salts, carboxylate, and acetate; alkali metal fluoroborate, zinc titanate; and metal salts of benzenesulfonic acid. The type of catalyst used will determine the distribution of the range of ethoxy groups. A stronger catalyst will result in a very tight or narrow distribution of ethoxy groups around the average. A weaker catalyst will result in a broader distribution.

The non-carboxylated alcohol ethoxylate,
Detrimental to the alkyl ethoxy carboxylate surfactant mixture, especially with regard to the performance benefits conferred therefrom. Therefore, it is critical that the alkyl ethoxy carboxylate-containing surfactant mixture used in the present invention contains about 10% by weight or less of alcohol ethoxylate, which is a raw material of the alkyl ethoxy carboxylate.
Commercially available alkyl ethoxylate carboxylate contains 10% or more of alcohol ethoxylate, but the route to obtain the desired high purity alkyl ethoxy carboxylate is known. For example, unreacted alcohol ethoxylate can be obtained by steam distillation (US Pat. No. 4,098,818).
Specification, Example I), or by recrystallization of an alkylethoxycarboxylate (GB 1,027,481, Example 1). Other routes to the desired carboxylate are described in U.S. Pat.
No. 98,818 and Japanese Patent Application No. 50-24215 by a method in which sodium hydroxide or sodium metal is reacted with monochloroacetic acid or a salt thereof and alcohol ethoxylate under a special combination of pressure and temperature. is there.

Alternatively, a hindered base such as potassium t-butoxide can be used in place of sodium hydroxide in the aforementioned patents to produce high purity alkyl ethoxy carboxylate with less stringent temperature and pressure requirements. In particular, hindered bases of the formula RO - M + , which generally comprise an alkyl group, a reactive oxygen center and a cation, are used. The structure of the hindered base is secondary or tertiary and the three carbon atoms of the reactive center,
It contains an oxygen atom and a non-linear alkyl group having at least one site of branching within the alkali metal or alkaline earth metal cation. The method comprises reacting the alcohol ethoxylate with the hindered base and chloroacetic anhydride in a molar ratio of hindered base to chloroacetic anhydride of 2: 1 or a molar ratio of hindered base to alkali metal salt or alkaline earth metal salt of chloroacetic acid of 1: 1) reacting with either an alkali metal salt or an alkaline earth metal salt of chloroacetic anhydride (the molar ratio of ethoxylated fatty alcohol to chloroacetic anhydride or an alkali metal salt or alkaline earth metal salt thereof is about 1: 0.7 to about 1: 1.25, the temperature is about 20-140 ° C. and the pressure is about 1-760 mmHg).

U.S. Pat. No. 4,214,101 (Example 1); U.S. Pat.
As disclosed in JP 48,509, West German Patent No. 3,446,561 and Japanese Patent Application No. 62,198,641, alcohol ethoxylate is reacted with oxygen in the presence of platinum, palladium or other noble metals. One of the by-products of such a method is soap, which should be limited to avoid adversely affecting the cleaning and mildness benefits provided by the composition as described above. This is achieved by using an alcohol ethoxylate feedstock containing a small amount of non-ethoxylated fatty alcohol and preferentially reducing the terminal methylene in the alcohol ethoxylate at least 90% of the time, preferably at least 95% of the time. It can be achieved by selecting a catalyst that oxidizes to Oxidation of non-terminal methylene groups in alcohol ethoxylates will generate soap from the ethoxylated fatty alcohol component.

The dishwashing composition of the present invention will be subjected to the acidic stresses generated by food stains when used, i.e. when applied to diluted and soiled dishes. In order to maintain the performance benefits of the composition during use, a buffer having a pKa value of about 0.5-1.0 pH units below the desired pH value should be present therein. Under these conditions, the buffer most effectively controls pH while using minimal amounts.

In the case of the liquid composition of the present invention, potassium is preferred over sodium. The reason for this is that potassium renders the composition of the invention more resistant to precipitation at low temperatures and gives the composition improved solubility. On the other hand, in the case of the gel composition of the present invention, sodium is preferable to potassium. The reason for this is that sodium makes it easier to gel the composition. A mixture of cations may be present in any of the compositions of the present invention.

Furthermore, in the case of the alkylethoxycarboxylates of the present invention, the presence of divalent cations has been found to improve the cleaning of greasy soils. This means
This is especially true when the composition is used in soft water containing several divalent ions. Dishwashing liquid compositions containing alkyl ethoxylate carboxylate that do not meet the narrow definition of the present invention will not benefit much from the addition of divalent ions and often will not It will actually show reduced cleaning performance. The divalent ions are believed to increase the loading of the alkyl ethoxy carboxylate at the oil / water interface, thereby reducing interfacial tension and improving grease screening.

When both a divalent ion and an alkaline pH are combined with the surfactant mixture of the present invention, a better grease screening is achieved than that obtained by using alkaline pH or divalent ions alone. Preferably, the divalent ion is magnesium present in the composition in an amount of about 0.1 to 1% by weight, most preferably about 0.3 to 0.8% by weight, while the pH is preferably about 8 to 9.5, most preferably It is about 8.5-9.5. Compositions containing higher amounts of magnesium and having a pH much higher than about 9.5 are not preferred because of their tendency to form precipitates.

Ethylene oxide condensates are broadly defined as compounds formed by the condensation of an ethylene oxide group (having a hydrophilic nature) with an organic hydrophobic compound which can be aliphatic or alkyl aromatic in nature. The length of a hydrophilic or polyoxyalkylene group that condenses with a particular hydrophobic group can be readily adjusted to produce a water-soluble compound having the desired balance between hydrophilic and hydrophobic elements.

(1) The C12-13 alkyl ethoxy (average 3.0) alcohol is reacted with potassium t-butoxide and sodium chloroacetate in a ratio of 1: 1.1: 1.1 as follows. First, the alkyl ethoxylate is mixed with potassium t-butoxide for about 1 hour at about 60 ° C. and about 20 mmHg pressure. Then, t
-Butanol is continuously removed from the reaction mixture by distillation. Thereafter, the vacuum is broken and sodium chloroacetate is added under mixing. The pressure is re-established at about 18-20 mmHg and the reaction is allowed to continue for about 3 hours. Thereafter, the reaction pressure is brought to atmospheric pressure with nitrogen and the steam heating coil is turned off. The reaction mixture is left in this state overnight. The next day, the temperature of the reaction mixture is raised and the pressure is reduced to remove t-butanol from the system.
