Abstract
Description
1)構造偏光子ファセットと誘電性部分反射ファセットの両方は、S偏光を反射する。
2)誘電性ファセットはS偏光を反射し、そして、構造偏光子はP偏光を反射するように配向付けられる。
3)誘電性部分反射ファセットは、LOEに沿って同一(一定の反射率を有する)であり得る一方で、構造偏光子軸角度のばらつきが、LOEにわたる全体的なカップリングアウト割合において必要とされるばらつきを提供するために使用される。このことは、LOEの製造コストを大幅に低下させる。
4)構造偏光子が偏光スタビライザとして機能する(複屈折性が制御されていない)導光路に、主要材料としてプラスチックを使用すること。
5)最低限の複数経路でファセットをオーバーラップさせること:つまり、導波路に沿って、構造偏光子と誘電性コーティングされたファセットを交互に配置することによって、カップリングアウトされる光線が、LOEを出る前に、隣接する構造偏光子ファセットに遭遇するケースを最小限に抑えながら、ファセットの近接オーバーラップが達成される。
Claims (17)
- 導光光学素子であって:
(a)少なくとも2つの平行な主要外部表面を有する透過的な基材であって、前記外部表面での内部反射によって基材内の光を導くための基材と;および、
(b)前記主要外部表面に平行でない前記基材内に配置された、複数の、相互に平行な内部表面であって、前記内部表面の各々の少なくとも一部が、第1偏光透過軸を有する構造偏光子を含み、前記構造偏光子が、前記第1偏光透過軸に対して平行に偏光された光に対して、実質的に透過的であり、かつ、前記第1偏光透過軸に対して垂直に偏光された光を、少なくとも部分的に反射する、内部表面と、
を含む、導光光学素子。 - 前記第1偏光透過軸が、前記内部表面の前のものに対して、各々の連続する内部表面ごとに、回転される、請求項1に記載の導光光学素子。
- 前記構造偏光子の前記第1偏光透過軸が、前記内部表面の第1と前記内部表面の次のものとの間の第1の方向に回転され、そして、前記内部表面の前記次のものと前記内部表面のさらに次のものとの間の、前記第1の方向とは反対の、第2の方向に回転される、請求項2に記載の導光光学素子。
- 前記構造偏光子の前記第1偏光透過軸が、前記内部表面の第1と前記内部表面の次のものとの間の第1の角度にわたって回転され、そして、前記内部表面の前記次のものと前記内部表面のさらに次のものとの間の、前記第1の角度より大きい、第2の角度にわたって回転される、請求項2に記載の導光光学素子。
- 前記構造偏光子が、前記第1偏光透過軸に対して垂直に偏光された光を、実質的に、完全に反射する、請求項1に記載の導光光学素子。
- 前記基材の少なくとも一部が、複屈折性を示す材料から形成される、請求項1に記載の導光光学素子。
- 前記第1偏光透過軸が、前記内部表面の前記複数の少なくとも2つの連続する内部表面に平行である、請求項6に記載の導光光学素子。
- 前記基材が、前記主要外部表面間で測定される厚さ有し、また、前記構造偏光子が、前記厚さの全体を満たさずに拡張する、請求項1に記載の導光光学素子。
- 前記構造偏光子が、前記厚さの半分未満に及ぶ、請求項8に記載の導光光学素子。
- 前記構造偏光子が、前記主要外部表面のいずれか一方へは拡張しない、請求項8に記載の導光光学素子。
- 前記主要外部表面に平行でない前記基材内に配置された、相互に平行な内部表面の、追加セットをさらに含み、内部表面の前記追加セットの各表面の少なくとも一部が、多層の、部分的に反射する誘電性コーティングを含む、請求項1に記載の導光光学素子。
- 内部表面の前記追加的セットが、前記複数の内部表面と平行である、請求項11に記載の導光光学素子。
- 内部表面の前記追加的セットが、前記複数の内部表面と交互になっている、請求項12に記載の導光光学素子。
- 内部表面の前記追加的セットの表面が、前記複数の内部表面の表面と同一面上にある、請求項12に記載の導光光学素子。
- 前記基材の厚さが、第1の層と第2の層とに細分化され、そして、前記複数の内部表面が前記第1の層内に位置し、また、内部表面の前記追加的セットが前記第2の層内に位置する、請求項11に記載の導光光学素子。
- 画像を観察者の目に提供するためのディスプレイであって:
(a)請求項1〜15のいずれかの導光光学素子と;および、
(b)コリメートされた画像を生成する画像プロジェクタであって、前記画像プロジェクタが、コリメートされた画像を導光光学素子に導入し、導光光学素子内の内部反射によって伝播させるように、前記導光光学素子に光学的にカップリングし、
ここで、前記複数の内部表面が、コリメートされた画像の一部を観察者の目の方へカップリングアウトするように配向されている、画像プロジェクタと、
を含む、ディスプレイ。 - 観察者からより遠隔の前記基材の側面に配置された吸収偏光子をさらに含み、前記吸収偏光子が、前記構造偏光子の前記第1偏光透過軸の平均的な方向と位置合わせされた、偏光の軸を有する、請求項16に記載のディスプレイ。
