Abstract
廃棄物に接触している吸収剤に酸性イオン交換樹脂を添加することにより、前記廃棄物における臭気を低減するための方法。
Description
本発明は、概して、猫の砂箱内で使用される猫砂等の廃棄物における臭気を低減するための方法に関する。
猫の砂箱は、しばしば猫の尿の強い臭気を有する。従来、猫の砂箱は、主にアンモニア及びアミンに起因すると考えられる猫の尿による強い刺激性の悪臭を軽減する、臭気抑制剤を有する。これは、典型的には、クレイ、チャーコール、重曹、臭気化結晶(odorized crystal)または他の吸着性材料を使用することにより達成される。吸気口を有する部屋に保存される場合、臭気を家の残りの部分から隔離するために、消臭剤がファーネスフィルタ上に添加されてもよい。先行技術は、例えばUS5,143,023において、その効率を改善するために、クレイの様々な処理を開示している。しかしながら、先行技術は、クレイ及びシリカが合成材料より好ましいことを教示している。
本発明により対応される問題は、猫砂における臭気を低減するための改善された方法を見出すことである。
発明の説明
本発明は、廃棄物に接触している吸収剤に酸性イオン交換樹脂を添加することにより、前記廃棄物における臭気を低減するための方法に関する。

別段に指定されない限り、全てのパーセンテージは、重量パーセンテージ(重量%)であり、全ての温度は℃である。別段に指定されない限り、全ての操作は、室温(20−25℃)で行われた。イオン交換樹脂の重量パーセントは、乾燥樹脂を基準とする。「廃棄物」という用語は、人間または動物により排泄された糞便、尿、汗及び他の悪臭生成物を指す。「吸収剤」という用語は、猫砂、靴の中敷き、使い捨ておむつ、尿漏れ防止パッド、生理用ナプキン、パンティライナー、マットレスカバー、エアゲル、カーペット及び布地を指す。
猫砂は、多くの場合、家猫が室内で排尿及び排便し得る容器に敷くように使用される、顆粒形態の吸収性材料である。多くの異なる種類の猫砂が入手可能であるが、本質的にそれらのほとんどが、クレイベース、シリカベース及び生分解性の3つの異なるカテゴリーに分類される。クレイベースの猫砂は、主に、しばしば少量の石灰石、結晶化シリカ、四ホウ酸ナトリウム、またはそれらの組み合わせを含む吸収性のクレイ材料である。シリカベースの猫砂は、主に結晶化シリカである。生分解性の猫砂は、マツ材ペレット、再生新聞紙、凝集性のおがくず、ブラジルキャッサバ、トウモロコシ、コムギ、クルミ、オオムギ、オカラ及び乾燥オレンジの皮を含む様々な植物源から作製される。
「アクリル樹脂」という用語は、少なくとも70重量%、好ましくは少なくとも80重量%、好ましくは少なくとも90重量%、好ましくは少なくとも95重量%、好ましくは少なくとも98重量%、好ましくは少なくとも99重量%のアクリルモノマーの重合単位を有するポリマーを指す。アクリルモノマーは、(メタ)アクリル酸及びそのC1−C22アルキル、ヒドロキシアルキルまたはポリエチレングリコールエステル;クロトン酸、イタコン酸、フマル酸、マレイン酸、無水マレイン酸、(メタ)アクリルアミド、(メタ)アクリロニトリル、及びクロトン酸、イタコン酸、フマル酸またはマレイン酸のアルキルまたはヒドロキシアルキルエステルを含む。
好ましくは、イオン交換樹脂は、実質的に球状のビーズの形態である。本発明において使用されるイオン交換樹脂は、ゲル型樹脂または巨大網状樹脂であってもよい。巨大網状樹脂は、25m2/g〜200m2/gの表面積及び50Å〜500Åの平均細孔直径;好ましくは30m2/g〜80m2/gの表面積及び100Å〜300Åの平均細孔直径を有する樹脂である。好適な樹脂は、例えば、アクリル樹脂、スチレン樹脂、及びそれらの組み合わせを含む。樹脂は、複数エチレン性不飽和モノマー(架橋剤)の重合単位を含有する。好ましくは、樹脂中の架橋剤のレベルは、0.5%〜16重量%、好ましくは少なくとも1%、好ましくは少なくとも2%であり;好ましくは14%以下、好ましくは12重量%以下である。ゲル樹脂は、好ましくは、0.5%〜4%の架橋剤レベルを有する。巨大網状樹脂は、好ましくは、3.5%〜16%の架橋剤レベルを有する。
好ましい実施形態において、樹脂は、典型的には、88%〜99.5%の(メタ)アクリル酸のモノマー残渣及び0.5%〜12%の架橋剤の残渣、好ましくは88%〜96.5%の(メタ)アクリル酸のモノマー残渣及び3.5%〜12%の架橋剤の残渣、好ましくは96%〜99.5%の(メタ)アクリル酸のモノマー残渣及び0.5%〜4%の架橋剤の残渣、好ましくはジビニルベンゼン(DVB)を含有するアクリル樹脂である。好ましくは、ゲル樹脂の平均粒子サイズは、30μm〜2000μm、好ましくは少なくとも50μm、好ましくは少なくとも100μmであり;好ましくは800μm以下、好ましくは500μm以下である。好ましい実施形態において、イオン交換樹脂は、スチレン及び架橋剤、例えばジビニル芳香族化合物;ジ−、トリ−及びテトラ−(メタ)アクリレートまたは(メタ)アクリルアミド;ジ−、トリ−及びテトラ−アリルエーテル及びエステル;グリコール及びポリオールのポリアリル及びポリビニルエーテルの重合単位を含む。好ましくは、架橋剤は、ジエチレン性不飽和、例えばDVBである。好ましくは、イオン交換樹脂の酸官能基は、スルホン酸基、カルボン酸基、リン酸基またはそれらの混合物;好ましくはスルホン酸またはカルボン酸を含む。典型的な酸性イオン交換樹脂は、乾燥基準で0.4〜8meq/ml、好ましくは少なくとも2meq/ml、好ましくは少なくとも3meq/mlであり;好ましくは6meq/ml以下である酸官能基を有する。好ましくは、酸官能基は、スルホン酸基の形態である。
好ましくは、弱酸イオン交換樹脂が本発明において使用される。好ましくは、樹脂は、カルボキシル基、ホスホン酸基、リン酸基、ホスフィン酸基、またはそれらの組み合わせ;好ましくはカルボキシル基で官能化される。本発明の好ましい実施形態において、スルホン酸基を有する強酸樹脂が使用される。
好ましくは、酸性イオン交換樹脂は、吸収剤及びイオン交換樹脂の0.1〜50重量%、好ましくは少なくとも0.5重量%、好ましくは少なくとも1.0重量%、好ましくは少なくとも3.0重量%であり;好ましくは25重量%以下、好ましくは10重量%以下、好ましくは7重量%以下の量で吸収剤に添加される。
実験手順
5Mの水酸化アンモニウム溶液(8.77%のアンモニアに対応する)及び28%の水酸化アンモニウム溶液をSigma Aldrichから購入し、アンモニア標準を作製した。原液をMilliQ水で希釈し、10ppm〜10%wt/wtの水酸化アンモニウムの標準を作製した。次いで、理想気体の法則を使用して、重量濃度を体積/体積(v/v)濃度に変換した。約15mgの各較正標準を22mLのヘッドスペースバイアルに入れ、Teflon被覆セプタムで栓をし、次いで質量選択検出を有するガスクロマトグラフィーと組み合わせたヘッドスペースサンプリング(HS−GC−MS)により分析した。機器は、Tekmar 7000ヘッドスペースオートサンプラ、ならびに吸収を最小限にするためのSilcosteel処理ループ及びコネクタを装備したAgilent GC−MSモデル6890/5973であった。分離に使用したカラムは、ChromPac PoraPlot アミンカラム(25m×0.32mm×10μm)であった。標準のヘッドスペース分析は、静的ヘッドスペースサンプリングにおいて生じ得るマトリクス効果を排除するために、完全蒸発モードで行った。このモードでは、小さい試料サイズが使用され、ヘッドスペースバイアル温度は、対象となる揮発性物質の完全蒸発を可能にするのに十分に高く設定される。この分析のために、サンプリング前に10分間、標準試料を150℃に加熱した。この温度は、水酸化アンモニウム溶液からヘッドスペース内にアンモニアを完全に放出させるはずである。アンモニアの較正プロットを構築した(アンモニアのピーク面積m/z=17対v/v濃度)。m/z=17イオンは、感度向上のために使用された。

試料を調製するために、仔猫の猫砂及び/または活性物質を22mLのヘッドスペースバイアルに秤量した。反復試料を常に調製した。適切なVICI気密シリンジを使用して、8.77%または28%の水酸化アンモニウム溶液上のヘッドスペースからの既知体積のアンモニアガスを分注することにより、試料を含有する各ヘッドスペースバイアル、及び空のバイアル(対照として使用される)にアンモニアを加え、続いて速やかにバイアルをTeflon被覆セプタムで栓をした。バイアルを室温で指定された長さの期間放置し、次いで各バイアル内のヘッドスペースを30℃に0または10分間加熱し、HS−GC−MSによりアンモニア含量に関して分析した。アンモニアの較正プロットから、線形最小二乗方程式を使用して、室温におけるこの溶液上のヘッドスペース内のアンモニアの濃度を決定した。
希釈したアンモニアガス(空気中約500ppm及び3000ppm v/v)を、仔猫の猫砂及びIERの試料を含有する22mLのヘッドスペースバイアルに添加した(表1を参照されたい)。次いで、室温で4時間後の各ヘッドスペースバイアルにおけるヘッドスペースアンモニアを測定し、アンモニア軽減を測定した(反復して実行)。2つのセットは、このデータが非常に再現性があることを示している。この試験のセットにおいて、猫砂は0.1グラムであり、弱酸性カチオン性イオン交換樹脂(メタクリル酸/DVB、巨大網状)を0.1g及び0.005gで試験した。
FRESH STEP(FS)は、>80%のベントナイトクレイ、<6%の結晶化シリカ及び0.1〜1%の四ホウ酸ナトリウムを含み;SCOOP AWAY(SA)は、70〜90%のクレイ、10〜25%の石灰石、<6%の結晶化シリカ及び0.1〜1%の四ホウ酸ナトリウムを含み;ARM&HAMMER(AH)は、トウモロコシ、マツ及びスギ;ならびに酸性または塩基性官能基を有さないスチレン−アクリルポリマーであるポリマーを含む。
全ての場合において、0.1gの猫砂をバイアルに量り入れた。以下の表2は、最初の注入、1日後の2回目の注入、及びバイアルに再び栓をして3日間待った後の、任意のアンモニアがまだ存在するかどうかを決定するための再試験を示す。2つの異なるレベルでの弱酸性カチオン性IERの添加は、3日後にアンモニアを軽減することができる。この例は、長期週末休暇の間猫を1匹だけで家に放置したのと同様のシナリオを示す効果があった。より短い軽減時間において、イオン交換樹脂に著しい差がある。
表3において、同じバイアル内へのアンモニアの再注入(注入当たり3000ppmのアンモニア、最終的には注入6において18000ppmまで蓄積)により、イオン交換樹脂の臭気軽減の継続を行った。6回までの再注入は、高いアンモニアレベル(最大18000ppmのアンモニア)であっても、イオン交換樹脂がまだアンモニア臭気を軽減することを示した。
表4において、シリーズの各バイアルに、指定されたアンモニア用量を注入し、次いでアンモニア軽減に関して検査した。仔猫砂に対するイオン交換樹脂の添加は、悪臭の捕捉を改善した。この効果は、複数の猫の場合、または飼い主が猫を長期間1匹だけで放置した場合に顕著となる。
表5において、我々はいくつかの異なる種類のイオン交換樹脂を、アンモニアを軽減するその能力に関して検討した。試料に3000ppmのアンモニアを注入し、15分の軽減期間を置いてから分析した。データは、強〜弱酸カチオン性イオン交換樹脂が、強塩基アニオン性イオン交換樹脂または非イオン性イオン交換樹脂と比較して優れた臭気軽減を有することを示している。アンモニアは、強酸カチオン交換樹脂または弱酸カチオン交換樹脂により、空気及び液体から除去され得る。アンモニアが遊離塩基として存在する場合、弱酸カチオン交換樹脂が、そのより高い容量及びより高い再生効率から好ましい。しかしながら、弱酸カチオン樹脂は、アンモニアが遊離塩基として存在する場合にのみ機能し;アンモニアが塩として存在する場合には、塩を分割するために強酸カチオン樹脂が必要である。
表6の軽減に関する備考:
100=優;>99.9=良;>98−<99=可;<98=不十分。

表6において、我々は、注入後5分及び15分の時点での300ppmのアンモニアの軽減を分析した。強塩基アニオン性交換樹脂は、低減されたレベルのアンモニアまで軽減することができなかった。弱酸及び強酸カチオン性交換樹脂は、アンモニアを軽減することができた。強酸カチオン性交換樹脂は、より短い注入及びサンプリング時間で、弱酸カチオン性交換樹脂よりも著しく良好に軽減することができた。
データは、強〜弱酸イオン交換樹脂が、強塩基イオン交換樹脂または非イオン性イオン交換樹脂と比較して優れた臭気軽減を有することを示している。
Claims (8)
- 廃棄物に接触している吸収剤に酸性イオン交換樹脂を添加することにより、前記廃棄物における臭気を低減するための方法。
- 前記酸性イオン交換樹脂が、前記吸収剤及びイオン交換樹脂の0.1〜50重量%の量で前記吸収剤に添加される、請求項1に記載の方法。
- 前記酸性イオン交換樹脂が、架橋アクリル樹脂、スチレン樹脂またはそれらの組み合わせである、請求項2に記載の方法。
- 前記吸収剤が、猫砂である、請求項3に記載の方法。
- 前記酸性イオン交換樹脂が、前記吸収剤及びイオン交換樹脂の0.5〜20重量%の量で前記吸収剤に添加される、請求項4に記載の方法。
- 前記酸性イオン交換樹脂が、スルホン酸またはカルボン酸官能基を含む、請求項5に記載の方法。
- 前記酸性イオン交換樹脂が、弱酸イオン交換樹脂である、請求項6に記載の方法。
