Abstract
Description
本発明の第1実施形態による液晶表示装置10について説明する。図1は、第1実施形態による液晶表示装置10の構成を例示する概略断面図である。液晶表示装置10は、偏光板610および偏光板620と、液晶パネル100と、位相差補償材520とを備える。
基板面内の座標軸をXY軸とし、基板法線をZ軸とする。X軸方向の主屈折率をNxとし、Y軸方向の主屈折率をNyとし、Z軸方向の主屈折率をNzとする。
Aプレート(正のAプレート)は、
Nx>Ny=Nz
を満たす。
Cプレート(負のCプレート)は、
Nx=Ny>Nz
を満たす。
Oプレートは、屈折率楕円体自体が基板に対して傾いているものであり、例えば、Nx>Ny>Nzに対してY軸を回転軸として、基板法線からある角度で傾いており、基板法線から見た時には、XY平面による楕円体断面における遅相軸がY軸方向になる。ただし、上記の条件に限定されるわけではなく、楕円体形状およびその傾きによって、Y軸方向が進相軸になってもよい。
第2実施形態による液晶表示装置10について説明する。図4は、第2実施形態による液晶表示装置10の構成を例示する概略断面図である。第2実施形態の液晶表示装置10は、液晶パネル100に形成された位相差補償層510が、Cプレート511およびOプレート512を備え、液晶パネル100の外側に配置された位相差補償材520が、1枚のOプレート521を備える点で、第1実施形態と異なる。
次に、上述の実施形態の応用例として、投射型表示装置(プロジェクター)について説明する。図5は、応用例によるプロジェクター800の光学系を例示する模式図である。プロジェクター800は、光源装置801と、インテグレーター804と、偏光変換素子805と、色分離導光光学系802と、光変調装置としての液晶光変調装置810R、液晶光変調装置810G、 液晶光変調装置810Bと、クロスダイクロイックプリズム812および投写光学系814と、を具備して構成されている。

- Cプレートを含む位相差補償層が形成された液晶パネルと、
前記液晶パネルの外側に配置され、OプレートまたはAプレートを含む位相差補償材と、

対向基板と、
誘電率異方性が負でプレチルトが付与された液晶により形成された液晶層と、
素子基板と、
を備える、
液晶表示装置。 - 前記位相差補償材は、2枚のOプレートを含む、
請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。 - 前記位相差補償層は、CプレートおよびOプレートを含む、
請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。 - 前記位相差補償層は、前記対向基板に形成されている、
請求項1〜3のうちいずれか1項に記載の液晶表示装置。 - 請求項1〜4のうちいずれか1項に記載の液晶表示装置、
