Abstract
【解決手段】一対の基板がブルー相を発現する液晶組成物を挟持する液晶表示装置において、該基板間の間隙を支えるスペーサ245a、245b、245cを、スペーサ下に設けられる遮光性を有する膜240a,240b,240cをマスクとして裏面露光243することによって自己整合的に形成する。スペーサ245a、245b、245cは、半導体素子や液晶素子の電極層が設けられる透光性を有する基板側に形成する。

Description
本発明の一に係る液晶組成物、及び該液晶組成物を用いた液晶表示装置について、図1、及び図5を用いて説明する。
本発明の一に係る液晶表示装置として、パッシブマトリクス型の液晶表示装置、アクティブマトリクス型の液晶表示装置を提供することができる。本実施の形態は、本発明の一に係るアクティブマトリクス型の液晶表示装置の例を、図2及び図3を用いて説明する。
トランジスタを作製し、該トランジスタを画素部、さらには駆動回路に用いて表示機能を有する液晶表示装置を作製することができる。また、トランジスタを用いて駆動回路の一部又は全体を、画素部と同じ基板上に一体形成し、システムオンパネルを形成することができる。
本実施の形態では、本発明の一態様の電子機器について説明する。具体的には、上記実施の形態で示す液晶表示装置を適用した電子機器について図6を用いて説明する。

- 液晶組成物を挟持する透光性を有する第1の基板、及び第2の基板と、
前記第1の基板と液晶組成物との間に設けられた、第1の電極層、第2の電極層、遮光性を有する膜、及びスペーサとを有し、
前記スペーサは前記遮光性を有する膜上に設けられ、
前記スペーサの下面はすべて前記遮光性を有する膜の上面と重畳することを特徴とする液晶表示装置。 - 請求項1において、前記第1の電極層、前記第2の電極層、及び前記遮光性を有する膜は同じ材料であることを特徴とする液晶表示装置。
- 液晶組成物を挟持する透光性を有する第1の基板、及び第2の基板と、
前記第1の基板と液晶組成物との間に、前記第1の基板側から順に設けられた遮光性を有する導電膜を含む素子層、及び絶縁膜と、
前記絶縁膜上に第1の電極層、第2の電極層、及びスペーサとを有し、

前記絶縁膜上に選択的に前記遮光性を有する導電膜と重畳する感光性樹脂層を形成し、
前記遮光性を有する導電膜をマスクとして、前記第1の基板を通過した光を前記感光性樹脂層に選択的に照射し、
前記感光性樹脂層において光照射領域を除去してスペーサを形成し、
前記絶縁膜上に、前記第1の電極層、前記第2の電極層、及び前記スペーサを囲うシール材を形成し、
