Abstract

Description
本願は、2009年4月28日に提出された米国仮特許出願番号第61/173,571号の優先権を主張し、その全体がここに引用によって援用される。本願は、2008年11月14日に提出され、かつその全体がここに引用によって援用される米国特許出願番号第12/271,760号の一部継続出願である。米国特許出願番号第12/271,760号は、2007年11月15日に提出され、かつその全体がここに引用によって援用される米国仮特許出願番号第60/988,404号の優先権を主張する。
発明の分野
本願は概して光ジャイロスコープに関し、特にレーザ源を利用する光ジャイロスコープに関する。
1970年代に初めて証明された光ファイバジャイロスコープ(FOG)は、最古であり最先端の光ファイバセンサの1つである。多くの産業用途および軍事用途が判明している。この成功の一部は、本来可逆的であり、それゆえに大部分の外乱に対して安定性が高い共通光路干渉計を検知要素として使用するサニャックループに基づいている。この成功の別の要素は、干渉計に信号を送るために、たとえばErドープ超放射ファイバ光源(SFS)からの広帯域光を使用する点である。非コヒーレント光は、ファイバループにおいて生じる2つの有害な作用、すなわち非線形カー効果によって誘起される非可逆的な位相ドリフトと、コヒーレント後方散乱によって引起こされる長期位相ドリフトとを本質的に除去することがごく初期の段階から示されていた。たとえば、H. C. Lefevre, The Fiber-Optic Gyroscope, Artech House, Boston(1993)参照。
一部の実施例において、光ファイバセンサは、ある長さを有する光ファイバコイルと、コイルに光結合されたレーザ源とを含む。レーザ源は、あるコヒーレンス長を有する。レーザ源からの光は、コイルに沿って第1の方向に伝播する第1の信号、およびコイルに沿って第1の方向と反対の第2の方向に伝播する第2の信号としてコイルに伝達される。第1の信号および第2の信号の光路は互いにほぼ可逆的であり、第1の信号および第2の信号は、コイルを通って伝播した後で互いに合成され、第3の信号を生成する。コヒーレンス長は、1メートルより大きいか、または200ミクロン〜10センチメートルの範囲である。
シミュレーションおよび実験によれば、レーザのコヒーレンス長が光ファイバジャイロスコープ(FOG)のファイバループの長さを超えると、コヒーレント後方散乱によるノイズが減少することがわかっている。コヒーレンス長が十分長い場合、ここに記載される一部の実施例に係るジャイロスコープは、従来の広帯域源によって駆動される同じジャイロスコープとほぼ同じ感度を有することができる。ここに記載される一部の実施例のレーザ源の一例は、半導体レーザである。レーザの特に良好な波長域は、およそ1.5μmである。なぜなら、ジャイロスコープの検知コイルで使用されるシリカベースのファイバの最低損失と一致するためであるが、他の波長のレーザ源もここに記載される一部の実施例に適合する。一部の実施例では適切に狭い線幅および十分に安定した周波数を有するいずれかの半導体レーザが利用可能であるが、分布フィードバック(DFB)レーザが良好な候補である。光電気通信産業用に開発されたおよそ1.5μmのInGaAsP半導体レーザは優れた候補である。なぜなら、電気通信要件を満たすために、超安定型であり、単一周波数を有し、かつ機械的に頑強であるように設計されてきたためである。さらに、他のノイズ減少法、たとえばレーザ周波数の変調(その全体がここに引用によって援用される米国特許出願番号第12/271,760号に記載されている手法)を適用することにより、広帯域源によって駆動される従来のFOGのコヒーレント後方散乱ノイズよりも、コヒーレント後方散乱ノイズを減少させることが一部の実施例において可能となる。ここに記載される一部の実施例に係るジャイロスコープのノイズは、ショットノイズによって制限される。
Claims (30)
- 光ファイバセンサであって、
ある長さを有する光ファイバコイルと、
前記コイルに光結合されたレーザ源とを備え、前記レーザ源はあるコヒーレンス長を有し、前記レーザ源からの光は、前記コイルに沿って第1の方向に伝播する第1の信号、および前記コイルに沿って第1の方向と反対の第2の方向に伝播する第2の信号としてコイルに伝達され、前記第1の信号および前記第2の信号の光路は互いにほぼ可逆的であり、前記第1の信号および前記第2の信号は、前記コイルを通って伝播した後で互いに合成され、第3の信号を生成し、前記コヒーレンス長は、1メートルより大きいか、または200ミクロン〜10センチメートルの範囲である、光ファイバセンサ。 - 前記コヒーレンス長は、500ミクロン〜10センチメートルの範囲である、請求項1に記載のセンサ。

- 前記センサは、コヒーレンス長の関数として変動する位相ノイズを有し、前記位相ノイズは、所定値のコヒーレンス長においてピーク値を有し、前記コヒーレンス長についての前記位相ノイズは、前記位相ノイズのピーク値のせいぜい2分の1未満である、請求項1に記載のセンサ。
- 前記センサは、コヒーレンス長の関数として変動する位相ノイズを有し、前記位相ノイズは、所定値のコヒーレンス長においてピーク値を有し、前記レーザ源の前記コヒーレンス長は、所定値未満である、請求項1に記載のセンサ。
- 前記センサは、コヒーレンス長の関数として変動する位相ノイズを有し、前記コヒーレンス長の位相ノイズは、約2μrad/√Hzとなる、請求項1に記載のセンサ。
- 前記センサは、コヒーレンス長の関数として変動する位相ノイズを有し、前記コヒーレンス長の位相ノイズは、約1μrad/√Hz未満となる、請求項1に記載のセンサ。

ある長さを有する光ファイバコイルと、前記コイルに光結合されたレーザ源とを備える光ファイバセンサを提供するステップを含み、前記レーザ源は、前記センサの位相ノイズが所定値未満となるようなコヒーレンス長を有し、前記コヒーレンス長は、前記ある長さ未満であり、さらに、
前記センサのDCオフセットを安定化させるステップと、
前記レーザ源からの光を第1の信号および第2の信号として前記コイルに伝達するステップとを含み、前記第1の信号は、前記コイルに沿って第1の方向に伝播し、前記第2の信号は、前記コイルに沿って第1の方向と反対の第2の方向に伝播し、前記第1の信号および前記第2の信号の光路は互いにほぼ可逆的であり、さらに、
前記第1の信号および前記第2の信号を互いに合成して、第3の信号を生成するステップを含む、方法。 - 前記コイルの長さに対する前記コヒーレンス長の比率は、0.1より大きい、請求項20に記載の方法。
