Description

The present invention relates to a vehicle fire prevention system that combines a passive fire prevention system corresponding to a vehicle fuel tank and an active fire prevention system corresponding to a passenger compartment.

Ground vehicles and aircraft used for military applications typically include a fire protection (flame control) system. When a projectile penetrates the vehicle's shell, the fire protection system is activated to minimize damage.

Another type of fire protection system is a passive system disposed around the fuel tank. One type of passive system is known as a powder panel. This type of system includes a peripheral element that is filled with an inhibitor and arranged to surround it. When the projectile penetrates the fuel tank, the powder panel also penetrates. Thereby, the powder agent is supplied into the fuel tank that has penetrated.

Another fire protection system is a so-called active system. Active systems are equipped with certain sensors and are used to supply fire control materials such as powder into the passenger compartment of a vehicle.

After the projectile has penetrated the fuel tank, it may happen that the projectile penetrates the passenger compartment. However, to date, active and passive systems have not been adapted to work with each other.

The vehicle fire prevention system includes a passive fire prevention system corresponding to a fuel tank of the vehicle. Furthermore, the vehicle fire prevention system includes an active fire prevention system corresponding to the passenger compartment of the vehicle. The control link sends a signal to activate the active fire protection system. Further, a vehicle equipped with a fire prevention system is disclosed.

These and other features of the present invention will be understood from the following detailed description and accompanying drawings. The following is a brief description of the drawings.

Schematic of a fire protection system for a vehicle. Schematic of the fuel tank which has a powder panel.

FIG. 1 schematically shows a vehicle 20. The fuel tank 22 is arranged at various positions on the vehicle shell 21. The illustrated fuel tank 22 includes a passive fire prevention system 26 such as a powder panel. FIG. 2 shows the passive fire prevention system (powder panel) 26 corresponding to the fuel tank 22 in more detail. Other types of passive fire protection systems corresponding to fuel tanks can be used without departing from this scope.

Referring to FIG. 1, a seat (seat) 50 is disposed in the passenger compartment 24. As shown schematically, the control line 40 connects the passive fire protection system 26 and the sensor 42. The active fire protection system 30 may include additional controllers that operate for a variety of additional other purposes. In the present invention, the active fire protection system 30 is activated when the sensor 42 determines an infringement on the passenger compartment. The sensor 42 may be a known sensor such as a fast-acting optical flame sensor, or other types of sensors may be used.

The vehicle 20 is, for example, a ground vehicle such as a tank or an aircraft. Furthermore, even other types of vehicles are within the scope of the present invention.

The projectile 25 penetrates the shell 21 at a location indicated by reference numeral 60, and penetrates the passive fire prevention system 26, the fuel tank 22, and the passenger compartment 24. As a result, as shown by reference numeral 28, the passive fire prevention system 26 supplies powder to the passenger compartment 24 and the fuel tank 22. Further, as indicated by reference numeral 32, the active fire prevention system 30 supplies powder to the passenger compartment 24.

Various types of materials can be used as flame suppressants. For example, the flame suppressant used in the passenger compartment includes a vaporized liquid such as halon 1301, or a halon substitute such as hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) or perfluoroketone. Other types of flame suppressants include FM-200, HFC-227ea, heptafluoropropane, Novec 1230, FK-5-1-12, dodecafluoro-2-methylpentan-3-one, water, and water and potassium acetate and so on.
