Abstract

また、本発明の他の態様は、イメージをディスプレイするディスプレイ装置である。このディスプレイ装置は、ディスプレイと、照明用光源と、コンピュータコントロールとを備える。コンピュータコントロールは、輝度情報及びカラー情報を含む入力信号を受け、該入力信号におけるグレイ濃淡度を求め、高輝度の場合には前記照明用光源からの光量を増加させ、低輝度の場合には前記照明用光源からの光量を減少させて、入力信号に対応してディスプレイ上にディスプレイされるイメージのグレイ濃淡度の数を増加させるものである。

本発明に使用できる液晶ディスプレイの例を示す図14を参照する。一例としての液晶ディスプレイの赤、緑そして青のピクセルのグループのレイアウトが示されている。これらのピクセルは平行した行と列とに並んでいる。大文字はピクセルの色を表し、例えばそのピクセルが赤、緑もしくは青の出力を与えるかどうかを表している。2行の部分を示している。
図24を参照する。フルカラーディスプレイ・サブシステム919は照明システム920を含んでいる。ディスプレイ・サブシステム919において照明システム920は幾つかの光源を含んでおり、それぞれの光源の光の波長は異なっている。例えば、3つの別個の光源902r,902g,902bはそれぞれ赤、緑そして青の波長の光、もしくは赤、緑そして青を含む波長帯域もしくは範囲内の光を発生する。光源はそれぞれの光を発生するダイオードであり、もしくはサブシステム919に使用したいと思う赤、緑そして青の光もしくは他の波長の光の光源でよい。コレステリック液晶反射器908は緑の光を反射し、反射器908aは赤の光を反射し、反射器908bは青の光を反射することができる。これらの反射は、光の円偏光特性がそれぞれの反射器内のコレステリック液晶材料の捩じれ方向と同じ方向にあるときに生じる。反射器908、908a、908bは入射光のその他の偏光に対して、そして入射光のその他の波長に対して透過性である。

Claims (1)
- 所定数の区分されたグレイ濃淡度を有する所定のグレイ濃淡度範囲内でカラーによるディスプレイが可能であり、照明光源とコンピュータコントロールとを有するディスプレイ装置によりディスプレイされるイメージのコントラストを制御する方法であって、
入力イメージ信号に含まれる輝度情報とカラー情報とを処理し、前記入力イメージ信号が、前記所定のグレイ濃淡度範囲よりも小さい範囲内で前記所定数の区分されたグレイ濃淡度よりも少ない第1の数のグレイ濃淡度を含むものである場合には、前記第1の数のグレイ濃淡度を該第1の数より多い第2の数のグレイ濃淡度に変更し、かつ、前記照明光源からの光量を調節する
ことからなり、
該光量の調節は、
前記入力信号が暗いイメージを表すものである場合には光量を減少させ、
前記入力信号が輝度の高いイメージを表すものである場合には光量を増加させる
ことからなることを特徴とするコントラストを制御する方法。
