Abstract
【解決手段】本発明のディスプレイ装置は、動作時に、ビデオ信号に応答して、受動ディスプレイが像を作り出すように光源からの光を調整し、光源の強度がビデオ信号によって制御される。光源によって照明された受動ディスプレイを使用して表示像を作り出す方法が、所望量の情報と、グレイスケールおよび色特性を備えた表示像を得るように光源を制御することで特徴づけられる。調光ディスプレイが像を形成するように光源からの入射光を調整するようになっているディスプレイシステムにより消費電力を減少させる方法が、相対的に暗い像の出力を減少させるように光源に与えられた電力を制御することで特徴づけられる。

図24を参照する。フルカラーディスプレイ・サブシステム919は照明システム920を含んでいる。ディスプレイ・サブシステム919において照明システム920は幾つかの光源を含んでおり、それぞれの光源の光の波長は異なっている。例えば、3つの別個の光源902r,902g,902bはそれぞれ赤、緑そして青の波長の光、もしくは赤、緑そして青を含む波長帯域もしくは範囲内の光を発生する。光源はそれぞれの光を発生するダイオードであり、もしくはサブシステム919に使用したいと思う赤、緑そして青の光もしくは他の波長の光の光源でよい。コレステリック液晶反射器908は緑の光を反射し、反射器908aは赤の光を反射し、反射器908bは青の光を反射することができる。これらの反射は、光の円偏光特性がそれぞれの反射器内のコレステリック液晶材料の捩じれ方向と同じ方向にあるときに生じる。反射器908、908a、908bは入射光のその他の偏光に対して、そして入射光のその他の波長に対して透過性である。

Claims (6)
- イメージをディスプレイするためのディスプレイ装置であって、
ディスプレイと、
異なる色の複数の光源を有する照明用光源と、
コンピュータコントロールと、
を備え、
前記コンピュータコントロールは、輝度情報とカラー情報を受け、入力信号におけるグレイ濃淡度を求め、前記入力信号の輝度が高輝度である場合には前記照明用光源からの光量を増加させ、前記入力信号の輝度が低輝度である場合には前記照明用光源からの光量を減少させて、前記入力信号に対応するイメージを前記ディスプレイ上にディスプレイする場合のグレイ濃淡度の数を増加させる、
ことを特徴とするディスプレイ装置。 - 請求項1に記載したディスプレイ装置であって、前記照明用光源は、異なるカラーの複数の光源要素を含み、各々のカラーについて光源要素は個別に制御できることを特徴とするディスプレイ装置。
- 請求項2に記載したディスプレイ装置であって、前記入力信号のグレイ濃淡度を各々のカラー成分のバックライトについて求め、各々のカラー成分の相対的輝度が暗いか又は高輝度である場合には、各々のカラー成分についての照明用光源の相対的輝度を減少又は増加させて、ディスプレイにおける各々のカラー成分についてのグレイ濃淡度を個別に増加させることを特徴とするディスプレイ装置。
- 請求項2に記載したディスプレイ装置であって、前記光源要素は発光ダイオードであることを特徴とするディスプレイ装置。
- カラーイメージをディスプレイするための方法であって、
少なくとも3つの個別に制御できるカラーを有する照明用光源からディスプレイを照明する光を与えてイメージをディスプレイするに際し、
コンピュータコントロールにより輝度情報及びカラー情報を処理し、各々のカラーについて入力信号におけるグレイ濃淡度を求め、
カラー成分ごとに個別に、入力信号に対応するイメージが相対的に暗いイメージの場合には光量を減少させ、カラー成分ごとに個別に、入力信号に対応するイメージが相対的に高輝度のイメージの場合には光量を増加させて、カラー成分ごとに個別に、前記入力信号に対応するイメージのディスプレイにおけるグレイ濃淡度の数を増加させる、
ことを特徴とする方法。 - カラーイメージをディスプレイするための方法であって、
少なくとも3つのカラーを有する照明用光源からディスプレイを照明する光を与えてイメージをディスプレイするに際し、
コンピュータコントロールにより、輝度方法及びカラー情報を処理し、入力信号におけるグレイ濃淡度を求め、前記入力信号に対応するイメージが相対的に暗いイメージであるか又は相対的に高輝度のイメージである場合には、光量を調節して該入力信号に対応するイメージをディスプレイする場合のグレイ濃淡度の数を増加させる、
ことを特徴とする方法。
