Abstract
【解決手段】本発明に係る液晶表示装置は、互いに向き合う両基板と、前記両基板の間に形成された液晶層とからなり、複数個の画素を備え、前記各画素は異なる配向特性を有する少なくとも二つのドメインで定義された液晶パネル、及び前記各ドメインの液晶配向方向に相応する方向に光特性を補償する補償フィルムを含むことを特徴とする。

Description
液晶の構造が細長いため、分子配列に方向性を持っており、人為的に液晶に電界を印加
して分子配列の方向を制御することができる。したがって、前記液晶の分子配列方向を任意に調節すると液晶の分子配列が変わるようになり、光学的異方性によって前記液晶の分子配列方向に光が屈折して、画像情報を表現することができる。
この場合、隣接したドメイン同士は互いに異なる配向特性を有しており、ここで、異なる配向特性を有したドメインをそれぞれ第1ドメイン11a、第2ドメイン11bと称する。
そして、それぞれ右上左下の対角線方向のドメインは第3ドメイン51c、左上右下の対角線方向のドメインは第4ドメイン51dである。
前記液晶パネルの一側の基板の背面、又は両側の基板の背面上に前記各画素、又はドメインの液晶配向方向に相応する方向に光特性を補償する補償フィルムを形成する段階を含むことを特徴とする。
そして、前記偏光板110は、前記液晶パネル100の上下部の背面に形成される。
前記液晶パネル100には隣接したドメイン間の液晶の配向が45°又は90°捩れた特性を有している。
このような液晶120のドメイン別の配向特性は、既述したように、プレチルト角を異なるようにしたり、画素領域内の画素電極、共通電極、又は誘電体などの構成を異なるようにして構成すればよい。
このような第1、第2基板を所定の間隔を有するように貼り合わせ、前記両基板の間に液晶層を形成して、液晶パネルを完成する。
図7に示したように、本発明の第2実施例に係る液晶表示装置の液晶パネルは、ドメイン別の液晶配向が左右方向、或いは放射型を有するようにしてランダムに分布されている。

Claims (19)
- 互いに向き合う両基板と、前記両基板の間に形成された液晶層とからなり、複数個の画素を備え、前記各画素は異なる配向特性を有する少なくとも二つのドメインで定義された液晶パネル、及び
前記各ドメインの液晶配向方向に相応する方向に光特性を補償する補償フィルムを含むことを特徴とする液晶表示装置。 - 前記補償フィルムは、前記液晶パネルの一側の基板の背面、又は両側の基板の背面上に位置することを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記補償フィルムは、前記液晶パネル内に互いに向き合う両基板上に形成されることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記補償フィルムは、前記各ドメイン別にそれぞれの液晶の配向特性によって異なる透過軸を有する偏光板であることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記補償フィルムは、各ドメイン別のそれぞれの位相差を補償する位相差補償フィルムであることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記一つの画素は総9つのドメインで区分され、中心のドメインを境界に各ドメインの液晶配向が放射状をなすことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記一つの画素は複数のドメインで区分され、一つ以上のドメインはランダムな液晶配向を形成し、残りのドメインは所定の方向の液晶配向を形成することを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 互いに向き合う両基板と、前記両基板の間に形成された液晶層とからなり、異なる配向特性を有する少なくとも二つの画素を備えた液晶パネル、及び
前記各画素の液晶配向方向に相応する方向に光特性を補償する補償フィルムを含むことを特徴とする液晶表示装置。 - 前記補償フィルムは、前記液晶パネルの一側の基板の背面、又は両側の基板の背面上に位置することを特徴とする請求項8に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記補償フィルムは、前記液晶パネル内に互いに向き合った両基板上に形成されることを特徴とする請求項8に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記補償フィルムは、前記各画素別にそれぞれの液晶の配向特性によって異なる透過軸を有する偏光板であることを特徴とする請求項8に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記補償フィルムは、各画素別のそれぞれの位相差を補償する位相差補償フィルムであることを特徴とする請求項8に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記液晶パネルは、一つの画素を中心に各画素の液晶配向が放射状をなすことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 複数の画素を備えて少なくとも二つの画素が異なる配向特性を有するか、複数の画素を備え、各画素は異なる配向特性を有する少なくとも二つのドメインがそれぞれ形成された第1、第2基板を用意する段階、
前記第1、第2基板の間に液晶層を形成して、液晶パネルを形成する段階、
前記液晶パネルの一側の基板の背面、又は両側の基板の背面上に前記各画素、又はドメインの液晶配向方向に相応する方向に光特性を補償する補償フィルムを形成する段階を含むことを特徴とする液晶表示装置の製造方法。 - 前記補償フィルムは、前記各画素、又はドメインの液晶配向の特性によって異なる透過軸を有する偏光板であることを特徴とする請求項14に記載の液晶表示装置の製造方法。
- 前記補償フィルムは、前記各画素、又は各ドメイン別にそれぞれの位相差を補償する位相差補償フィルムであることを特徴とする請求項14に記載の液晶表示装置の製造方法。
- 第1、第2基板を用意する段階、
前記第1、第2基板に複数の画素、又は各画素が少なくとも二つのドメインを有するように定義して、各画素又は各ドメインを異なる方向に光特性を補償する補償フィルムを形成する段階、
前記補償フィルムが形成された第1、第2基板上に前記補償フィルムの各画素、又はドメインの光特性に相応する配向方向を有するようにTFTアレイ工程及びカラーフィルターアレイ工程を行う段階、
前記第1、第2基板の間に液晶層を形成して、液晶パネルを形成する段階を含むことを特徴とする液晶表示装置の製造方法。 - 前記補償フィルムは、前記各画素又は各ドメイン別にそれぞれの液晶配向の特性によって異なる透過軸を有する偏光板であることを特徴とする請求項17に記載の液晶表示装置の製造方法。
- 前記補償フィルムは、各画素又はドメイン別にそれぞれの位相差を補償する位相差補償フィルムであることを特徴とする請求項17に記載の液晶表示装置の製造方法。
